Super Mario Land Theme ピラプト王国, as improvised by Tom Brier

- Cezary Sławecki transcribed this into MIDI. I've written it out. When I gave the original simple score to Tom, I asked him not to flesh it out right away, but to build up on it so people can see how to add things to these three- or four-voice synthesizer tunes and make them sound more robust. Thus it's rather fitting that his performance now has been transcribed.
There are some notes in there that I don't think he intended to hit -- one diminished chord and one A in the bass where a G would make sense -- but, well, here it is, warts and all.
Hopefully you can study what he did and it will help you to fill out these simple tunes. They're quite boring on the piano when you only play with the voice limitations of those old synth chips; fill 'em out!
You can see the original sight-read video (quite old so poor quality) here: • Super Mario Land - Bir...
Download this transcription from my site: www.keeper1st.com/music/vgm.html (have to scroll down quite a way because the original transcription was one of the first things I did).
For some reason, I find this better than the original tune itself.
Taven Webb because its better
Tom Brier is a piano/ragtime genius! Look up his video game covers!
Yeah
it’s because it’s tom brier. he is THE man. love the guy.
Still 99% the work of talented and largely forgotten composer, hirokazu tanaka
2:39 I can't stop listening to that last progression of perfectly positioned descending chords. Simply beautiful. Thank you Tom.
ikr i had to listen to it like 3 times
At first I thought it was the new super Mario bro’s wii intro music lol
sent a chill up my spine
Now that's a cadence..
I've got a fever and the only cure is more tom brier. I'm dying to hear him play more video game tunes
i feel ur pain bro hah
Mayer Yedid okay, who is going to tell him?
@@inakibolivar664 he was in a car accident and is very injured and fragile. His situation isnt good :\
just listen to doctor mario
That fever could be COVID-19
That ending was probably one of the most beautiful cadences I've ever heard in my whole life. And to think that this guy just casually improvised it is actually insane.
I'm sure it's something he came up with a while ago and just pulled out now because he thought it fit
@@minuspi8372 Probably but that's still insane because while improvising, he noticed that a whole section fitted in the music and adapted it to fit
@@minuspi8372 Please see Tom Brier, you have no idea what you are talking about.
@@TrekDelta I'm a huge fan of Tom Brier. You have no idea what you're talking about if you think improv musicians don't reuse things.
@@minuspi8372 indeed. knowing when to make use of existing material is a critical improvisational skill
Whoops. I just noticed I got the rhythm wrong in one spot. It's corrected in the PDF.
+Nike Prako Read the description...
***** Oh haha.
+Nike Prako The MIDI file is not mine to give out. You'd have to ask Cezary. He does not provide a public link to his MIDI creations. His UA-cam channel is Czarek7711

what was the soundfont that you used in this video?
Tom Brier has brought more of my childhood memories to life than I could ever give back to him.
My dad doesn't do video games, but he played this on the gameboy with us when I was 4.
Tom is the only person in the world that can take something as simple as a GameBoy soundtrack and make it sound like it should be played in a booming concert hall with thousands of spectators
Unfortunately, not anymore. Since 2016 he was in a car accident and hasn't been able to play the piano.
a lot of that japanese video game music is not "simple" at all. compared to contemporary music at least.
Influences of Joplin, Mozart, Chopin, BEETHOVEN, Bach, and Rachmaninov heard simultaneously, which is remarkable. Thanks to the greats for the inspiration, Brier for the talent, and the transcribers for the wonderful work.
1:33 that little bit always gets me. I'm not normally the type to listen to piano covers of most stuff I listen to, I just prefer the original compositions and their wider variety of sounds and percussion and that, but this really is an exception for me. Can't stop listening to this.
First page "Well this is somewhat playable." Flips second page "Nope"
Elin la Verde tal vez
Not really. Change frequently!
Practice practice practice!
Trust me this piece gave me a hell of a time. And I have not played ragtime before. And don't know how to play piano that well. And now after a month I'm finally on the 3rd page. The more u practice the easier it gets. And its actually really fun to play
@@tempex5862 I want a yt video of you playing it sir 🤗
Wow, the accuracy of this transcripton is amazing. Toms piano playing is a sight to be seen! Ever since I first saw this video years ago I wished I could play like Tom, now I can! He puts so much passion into his playing it really captures the spirit of the music, he's inspiring to hear.. Thanks so much for your work writing it out and I hope Tom has a 100% recovery.
better than the original. how i found tom briers piano stuff in the first place. was just looking for an old tune i used to listen to on my gb. and i found something that made me feel like i was listening to it for the first time again. it breathed life into that song in a way that i dont feel many people are capable of anymore.
F4POREON yes
Wowww you have no idea how long people have waited for this!
my favorite part about this improvisation is how at the end he slowly step by step flushes all of the rag out leaving the basic original melody before his final descending chord sequence. It's just perfect.
Give Tom my best wishes for his recovery! I can't wait 'till he can play again, if he'll be able to! I look up to him as a pianist myself and I'm dying to hear more!
This is god-damned magical
Amazing as always
This is near and dear to my heart. I listene to the audio from the old vid all of time. This sheet is so important to me. Thank you so much
So beautiful
Absolutely amazing! I love it!
Thank you so much for transcribing this. I've had Tom's version stuck in my head for days, but never the talent to learn to improvise like that. Now I can at least try to understand what he was doing.
i truly hope that Tom knows just how much his music means to me and so many other people
This, Tom, you, and Tanaka are a gift to this world. Thank you so much for this!
This is absolutely amazing!
You and Tom are amazing!
The original is actually my favorite one by Tom, I've heard it so many times now and this transcription is note perfect. Awesome job
I love seeing the intricacy of the improvisation. My ears have trouble keeping up.
I really like it when Tom starts out in the original and then starts stacking on it. Thanks 1st!
Thanks for this!
Those parts with the 3's almost sounds like when mario gets a mushroom! Nice!
Tom brier is a god amongst men. Mario music in general is mostly to always an absolutely beautiful masterpiece
oh, my goodness! this song is a journey, especially this rendition of it, it brought me straight to tears!
Tom Brier's improvisation is magical! (:
Gotta love that ending. Genius stuff.
This takes me back
phenomenal!
thanks so much for this! I am not veyr good at theory so this will help me play more interesting versions of the pdfs you already posted. keep it up!
Finally more Tom Brier VGM stuff! Please keep them coming!
+João Vitor Jardim Fagundes Technically this one dates back to 2009; it's just been written down now.
Outstanding!
This kinda stuff is the reason I started playing. It just makes me smile the whole time, and I want to be able to do it too
This is really good. Too damn good!
I am very thankful about these sheets :)
Thank you very much!
I’ll always remember playing this game on a Gameboy gifted by my father.
Amazing.
This is cool, but I must say I enjoy the fun and enthusiasm he exudes when he plays. Genius!
This is crazy good and super interesting to see, I really like this version of the mario land theme :D
Wow just brilliant
Wonderfull
Such a great song, happy on the outside with a hint of dying on the inside... Filled with nostalgic feelings and i don't know why. wish i could return to the past before i really understood the world around me, i miss it...
What you have described is actually the archetypal “ragtime aesthetic” (happy on the outside, sad on the inside). You nailed it.
@@andrewbarrett1537 where do you guys get the sad "dying" part? I dont see it
@@gerardjansens1748 probably mostly nostalgia
It takes a master to translate music this advanced to sheet music with such accuracy. Well done.
That ending is so great
This is soooooo cool
Belt, leather belt.
This transcription is very useful to understand how Tom improvises, I'll use it to study, thank you Keeper1st!
Do you have any other transcription like this one, with gradual "variations" on a very simple tune to use as a reference?
+ARM Just the other one done so far... ua-cam.com/video/2YoFYac4NII/v-deo.html
+Keeper1st Thank you!
Finally, SMG4 ending theme in the 1900'
love that
My favorite improv since 09!
Some people are so good that they inspire you, others are so good that you give up because fuck that.
This is awesome. And i give up
im just amazed at how he can improv this tom brier is just not even human
awesome
Hey man, just wanted to say thanks for posting this. The original of this is easily one of my favorite piano videos of all time (i think i have over 100 watch throughs) but i never had a good enough ear to transcribe it myself. Got a new years resolution now :P
Sidenote, Super Mario Land, not world. A small but important distinction if anyone's trying to find this video.
"JUST NOW!"
I'm a huge fan of tom! I would pay to see him play a concert of all these Nintendo ragtime themes!!! Please make more of these videos where you write out all his improv! :D
Beast...
That's a beautiful song in Super Mario Land there's a beautiful song I can look like a cartoon and make it 💗
"Hip" Tanaka was my favourite composer for the early Nintendo consoles.
Epic.
Tom Brier Theme,
Its the best best theme for a best best genius,
Once you've heard one of his themes
No turning back
YAY! another game improv! i love tom's playing
+DrRoborapter Though you're not actually hearing Tom's playing here. The audio here is a programmed MIDI file created to mimic his performance. See the video description for a link to the original performance.
aaaaah thanks!
+Keeper1st this midi is fantastic! How long did it take to get the articulations programmed after you had the notation scored?
it is an excellent midi, i couldn't even tell haha
+Dox Fill The MIDI was made first. I did not make it; Cezary did. I created the sheet music.
He took a song he'd never heard and somehow made it way better than itself lol
I have the biggest smile on my face!
This song is super catchy
I love that minor second (B flat against A) at 0:41, whether intentional by Tom or not.
When you wish you can go back In time
So you can save Gwen from dying Spoodey?
I've played the saxamophone when I was young.... Gahhh dayam piano players I swear! Reading two things at once? Amazing!
Now look at a conductor’s score.
i love u, keeper1st!!
This is great how clean this is but nothing captures what the original recording got. Something is just there that this one takes away. I'm glad both exist though.
That ending cadence is hilarious
Everytime I hear this song I think of the Brentalfloss version cause the lyrics were super catchy.
Ehre
Play the vid at .75 speed it’s so good
Waiting for my fave Snow Mountain
Holy… god.
you win the heaven
I have a request for u to give Tom. See if he can play the Banjo Kazooie theme and also the Theme for Diddy Kong Racing. I think he can put a great spin on both of those songs, Giving them at Tom flare he gives on all the songs he's played. He's one of the best piano players i've heard
Benzaï master ;)
not a single dislike, amazing !
1.25倍がちょうどいい
If I were to go back in time to Old Wild Western days, I’d sit at the piano at a saloon and play this song
People would be shocked and amazed, as they'd never have been exposed to music of this style before.
Super Mario LAND!!!!!
+Cookiesars Derr, I knew that. I even wrote it in Japanese when entering tags. But for some reason I typed "World" when writing in English. Fixed now. Thanks.
had to increase the spd by 1.25 to make it closer to the original.
이거 너무 좋은듯
The ending though..
He did the song justice I’d say
I love japan
0:55 Is Where it gets juicy
I am proud that Poland starts to mean something^^
Very very nice!! I'll be practice this one :-) May I upload my piano play sometime?
.75 playback speed = depression
me: listening and smiling
Would you consider Tom playing this sheet?
Brier mode activated times two!!!
