  • Cezary Sławecki transcribed this into MIDI. I've written it out. When I gave the original simple score to Tom, I asked him not to flesh it out right away, but to build up on it so people can see how to add things to these three- or four-voice synthesizer tunes and make them sound more robust. Thus it's rather fitting that his performance now has been transcribed.
    There are some notes in there that I don't think he intended to hit -- one diminished chord and one A in the bass where a G would make sense -- but, well, here it is, warts and all.
    Hopefully you can study what he did and it will help you to fill out these simple tunes. They're quite boring on the piano when you only play with the voice limitations of those old synth chips; fill 'em out!

    That ending was probably one of the most beautiful cadences I've ever heard in my whole life. And to think that this guy just casually improvised it is actually insane.

    Tom Brier has brought more of my childhood memories to life than I could ever give back to him.
    My dad doesn't do video games, but he played this on the gameboy with us when I was 4.

    Influences of Joplin, Mozart, Chopin, BEETHOVEN, Bach, and Rachmaninov heard simultaneously, which is remarkable. Thanks to the greats for the inspiration, Brier for the talent, and the transcribers for the wonderful work.

    1:33 that little bit always gets me. I'm not normally the type to listen to piano covers of most stuff I listen to, I just prefer the original compositions and their wider variety of sounds and percussion and that, but this really is an exception for me. Can't stop listening to this.

      Trust me this piece gave me a hell of a time. And I have not played ragtime before. And don't know how to play piano that well. And now after a month I'm finally on the 3rd page. The more u practice the easier it gets. And its actually really fun to play

    Wow, the accuracy of this transcripton is amazing. Toms piano playing is a sight to be seen! Ever since I first saw this video years ago I wished I could play like Tom, now I can! He puts so much passion into his playing it really captures the spirit of the music, he's inspiring to hear.. Thanks so much for your work writing it out and I hope Tom has a 100% recovery.

    better than the original. how i found tom briers piano stuff in the first place. was just looking for an old tune i used to listen to on my gb. and i found something that made me feel like i was listening to it for the first time again. it breathed life into that song in a way that i dont feel many people are capable of anymore.

    my favorite part about this improvisation is how at the end he slowly step by step flushes all of the rag out leaving the basic original melody before his final descending chord sequence. It's just perfect.

    Hey man, just wanted to say thanks for posting this. The original of this is easily one of my favorite piano videos of all time (i think i have over 100 watch throughs) but i never had a good enough ear to transcribe it myself. Got a new years resolution now :P
    Sidenote, Super Mario Land, not world. A small but important distinction if anyone's trying to find this video.

    I have a request for u to give Tom. See if he can play the Banjo Kazooie theme and also the Theme for Diddy Kong Racing. I think he can put a great spin on both of those songs, Giving them at Tom flare he gives on all the songs he's played. He's one of the best piano players i've heard
