  • This is an old clip for the three sisters group, Elbalabil. The clip has lots of culture in it, the lady dancing in the middle is dancing a classical dance style that is still practiced these days, mostly in bridal dances. Notice how the male dancer is proudly doing circles around the female dancer and greeting the singers and the band...he almost seems to be showing off or dancing a victory dance to show his strength and masculinity, this is also very typical in such cultural dances. You can also see the simple band, only three instruments...the classic semi-extinct accordion (far right) used to be very popular those days and interior decoration was nothing but few fabrics hanging here and there. I would estimate the clip was shot during the seventies.

A beautiful song, and the clip is just perfect for the era - hair do and characters, ease and free spirit. I'd say it was the 60s. The dance is called "The Pigeon Dance" or in Arabic "Al-Ragaba".

The name was actually given by the British who ruled at that time, not the Sudanese. The British obviously saw the similarity between the movements in this dance and that of a pigeon's dance. I believe there are a few other birds that dance like this - only its the male that dances to attract the attention of the female.

Unfortunately my reply comes a year after you pose the question; in this clip an "ethnic group" isn't quite relevant. the Song and performance are traditional pieces from Northern/Central Sudan.
