I respect your comments. Diana revisited this composition a year or so ago, IMO that second performance is better. Her voice has matured and her interpretation is more refined. As a 14 year old she did great, considering she had voice concerns leading up to this performance you watched. Had very limited time to prepare for this round in the competition. After the competition doctors advised Diana to rest her voice for the summer. I'm currently dealing with an inner ear infection that's going to prevent me from performing concerts for the next 2 weeks , that has been scheduled since the early spring. Problems arise for all of us, she dealt with her situation and has learned to take care of her voice.

The sad thing is a majority of people are most impressed with ' those' parts, Im sure they considered it and put them in. If you watch the masses that react to this you would see overall it was the right choice for the time. I dont think they were her favorite part either.
I just want to say that the "cringy" moments that you mention are incredibly difficult power vocal runs. Personally i love this one it is a powerful version of the song something different that was missing and i love even more her version at the age of 18 (She does the same runs there too by the way).
I might be mistaken, but I understood the author's comments to be referring to the wildly exaggerated physical movements that Diana made. I disagree with those movements, also. My only disagreement with the author is that 'Diana needed to do that in order to make those runs'. I didn't hear the author specifically criticize the runs.

If she meant the physicality of it sure ok i tend to focus more on the voice but i still find nothing wrong with it, that was her routine for this song and again i find nothing cringe about it but as with everything not all people agree on things and that is fine.
