  • In this video, we drive along US 26, the Mt. Hood Scenic Byway, and make a left as we drive up to the Timberline Lodge. This stretch of road offers amazing views of Mt. Hood, which is the highest mountain in Oregon at 11,249 feet.

    Oregon is so gorgeous. I hope to live there one day. Alabama's beaches are nice, but that mountain air just looks refreshing.

      @@angelaprestwood1351 "Unlike its neighbor to the north, Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood does not have a history of violent explosive eruptions. Instead, lava flows (see Volcano Hazards graphic for definitions of bold terms), rarely traveling more than 6 to 8 miles from their source, have built up the flanks of the volcano one sector at a time. Sometimes, instead of flowing slowly downhill, lava piles up over its vent forming a lava dome many hundreds of feet high. On the steep upper slopes of Mount Hood, growing lava domes have repeatedly collapsed to form extremely hot, fast-moving pyroclastic flows."

    I made the very same drive in July 2017 when I had the good fortune of traveling from Florida to Oregon for a work trip. It was my first time in Oregon and I was awestruck by the scenery. This brings it back. Thanks for sharing!

      @@InterstateKyle NoCal, Oregon and Washington have two colliding tectonic plates to thank for the incredible scenery and geology that make drives like this possible -- most of which are just a couple hours' drive from one another -- from the coast to the Cascade Range. I still think, though, that the Sierra Nevada has the Cascades beat in terms of the starkness of the geology in both places. Either way, I'm enthralled by the mountains and their majestic geology, the clear, thin, dry air, the pine trees, and the snow. There must be something in my Scandinavian DNA that beckons me to these places; but when I'm up in the Sierras I'm in Heaven - Paradise. US-395 from Cajon Pass to the Carson Range is my single favorite road route, period.

    Great video Kyle! the music was amazing! Mount Hood is beautiful, really liked the photos you took! was that construction project just resurfacing or were they actually widening the highway?

    • @InterstateKyle
      @InterstateKyle  7 років тому

      They were resurfacing to my knowledge. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

    • @briane173
      @briane173 2 роки тому

      Not that it couldn't use widening, along with a raised median; but I doubt Oregon or the Federal Govt will sink money into it because of the environment.

    Mt Hood has been declared dormant since the volcanic structure has been dated as being so very old, so much so as the symmetry of the typical "volcanic cone" has collapsed, deteriorated so much, one whole side of this "cone" has slid down the side, exposing the inner magma chambers & conduits...long since cooled & inactive.

    • @Markmedina75
      @Markmedina75 3 роки тому

      Mt. Hood erupted in the late 1800s. You can see steam venting from the crater while riding the slopes. The cascade volcanoes are very much alive.

    • @AndieBlack13
      @AndieBlack13 3 роки тому +1

      @@Markmedina75 Yes, a visit to a USGS website has Mt. Hood still active! I noted the deterioration of the typical cone shape as an indicator of its activity value, I was wrong...Just how active & dangerous it could be?, only the USGS knows. Volcanology made huge strides in the study of Mt. St. Helens in 1980....I was there at the time, personally saw one of the later major eruptions, on a clear day in the Portland metro area, heard it on the news & raced up to the west-hills in Portland, watching the slow moving giant column of ash right up to the stratosphere before being sheared off in that "Anvil" shape

    Rhododendron??? Where next - Azalea? (If you are familiar horticulcurally with rhododendrons, that is NOT far-fetched in the least - as the two flowers share growing areas.)
