If they are questioning the validity of him being one of the best guitarists in the world then they haven't seen his work. Oh well. Those of us who have know what he is capable of and how much talent he has.
the crowd are so polite and reserved , if i could witness an intimate gig with three of the best folk musicians in the world i`d be pissing my pants with excitement!! Richard Loudon and Suzanne in one room?? that`s like heaven to me
I am always amazed at RT shows - I am the only one bopping, the only one even tapping my toes. What is it with old white people that allows them to sit stone still during such brilliant rocking songs?!
Richard Thompson is definitely one of my all time favorites.I have heard him several times and met him and he is just the kind of guy you can easily admire. His music ,his humour, his friendliness. He is an exceptional man.I have learned to measure the fulfillment of my life by meeting such inspirational people.
Oh wow I've been looking for this song for 30 years... literally! I remember hearing it on the radio in the 90s when I was driving one sunny day to uni and I fell in love with it! What an amazing song... just love the songwriters ego!!!
The looks on her face are priceless, alternating between awe, amazement one person could produce so much sound, and disbelief. What i like best about her glances at RT and LWIII are the deference and respect.
He is absolutely wonderful! Recently heard him on my local radio. I have to say that I do hear Pete Townsend(playing and singing, lyrics, tempo and all) in this one...anybody else?
I feel so good after watching and listening to this, and having taken note of how to deliver a song I have digested Richards performance with a mental note to remind oneself that this is how it's done. Thanks Richard Thompson.
This is one of my favorite songs. Listen to the words -- a smashing theme song for a female superhero (an ambidextrous one in particular.) Listen. xxxooo
1. A panel of people at Rolling stone declared it. Not just an opinion. 2. You do realize he's singing a song and playing an acoustic guitar at the same time in this song? It's hardly the same as someone sitting on a stool concentrating on one or the other. 3. He has a unique playing style you may not know about. He's basically playing two parts at once on many songs. 4. The "best" is a matter of opinion. This is music, not math.
great version of this also in NPR archives somewhere prolly Fresh Air program, with a short (hilarious) interview slightly more mindblowing guitar playing maybe than this version.
caught his tour this year. preferred him solo though. like snow goose. so much and so little time. his Down where drunkhards roll often passes for a trad song in song sessions . goes on a bit on his guitar solos that I some times think he's giving the vocals a rest , but i dont hold it against him. yep the guy has provided the discerning musicologists with a sizeable helping. But i do mean version of beeswing too.
I don,t think that's a star of David. Its a badge from the LA sherrifs office. Google his name and sherrif's badge and you'll find a q and a on his web site when he mentions it.
I think that Pete Townsend, if he were honest, would say he was flattered by the comparison. And then he'd probably smash something and go have a lie down.
I don't get it. He's an OK guitarist, but far and away nothing spectacular. He does well accompanying his voice, but one of the top 20 guitarists (Rolling Stones)? He's a troubadour using guitar to accompany his voice. Apparently, the person who made such a grandiose statement is reporting a strong uninformed personal bias. Rosenwinkle. Kreisberg. Kotke. Segovia. Stevie Vai. Hendrix. Paul. Atkins. Emmanuel. His voice is pleasant, but not unforgettable.
It's beyond me that the BBC hasn't made the whole series available to buy.
The llook of fear on the faces of Suzanne and Loudon is priceless when they know they have to follow this guy.
Certainly a candidate for world's best living guitar player.
He is
The best living guitar player, that is.
I got nuthin. The best guy nobody's ever heard of.
Richard Thompson's worst stuff is merely "good." His best stuff is miraculous.
Exactly!
This is my entrance song to the end of the pandemic!

Yes, he is light years ahead of his stage mates. Not that they are not talented, he is just so much better.
Oh wow I've been looking for this song for 30 years... literally! I remember hearing it on the radio in the 90s when I was driving one sunny day to uni and I fell in love with it! What an amazing song... just love the songwriters ego!!!
This expresses such a lot to me. Seething stage presence. 🌹🧙♀️

Brilliant, the guy is a beacon in the light of Conformity, love you Richard!
Now time to break some hearts!
FANTASTIC song!
Richard Thompson is SO good!
He is absolutely wonderful! Recently heard him on my local radio. I have to say that I do hear Pete Townsend(playing and singing, lyrics, tempo and all) in this one...anybody else?
Richard is always jaw dropping.
Absolutely Amazing.Richard Thompson - So Effortless,So Magnificent
Richard Thompson really is one of the best.
I've been following him since his days with "Fairport Convention". He's a fine songwriter and one of the better all-around Guitarists around.
Suzanne Vega looking at him and thinking 'how the hell does he do it...'

I've watched this so many times. Too good.
2:00 how to manage a very good guitar part. Hats off
The man is a genius! :D
'Can't wait to see old RT in concert this October.
Fantastic performance! I'm so glad I've been able to see him live twice (and hopefully a third time this summer)

just incredible
stuffed with relevant meaning
genius, shucks
Somebody check behind that curtain for the other 4 guitarists. What.a.player...
excellent video, thanks for post
RIP dad... x
I have to commend Loudon and Suzanne for not leaving the stage...
If you were offered a gig on Songwriters Circle...and Richard Thompson was on with ya...
Maybe not.
Suzanne holds her guitar very nicely...
She almost couldn't resist playing along, you see that?
Thinking of you !

Raisin' some cain here
...after stating how influential he was on Richard's career
Scary aint it how convincing the old geezer is about the wor ds?
I think that Pete Townsend, if he were honest, would say he was flattered by the comparison. And then he'd probably smash something and go have a lie down.
Up there with Paul Brady guitar wise
Four gram of speed and I'm off
don't fuc# with Richard.

Keep on trolling...
Opinions are like assholes. No offense of course...
and thanks for your opinion...
A little bit of knowledge and a pair of ears? Would make you sound a lot less like a jealous troll...
obviously never heard him play electric guitar.
