Everyone is talking about his voice (which is truly exceptional) but what makes this recording even more great is his phenomenal phrasing. The lines are always made up with perfect subtle crescendi and decrescendi.
what made Fritz so unique is his attention to detail, phrasing and dynamics. really but a handful of tenors that come to mind with such a gift. Luciano was the master of closing notes, as low as middle F. untouched! i know that commercially he was crowned the king of the high C, but amongst aficionados and this fellow vocalist, there simply is not and has not been another tenore with such physical acumen as Luciano.. his mouth and hard palate were unique which contributed to this closing-low-notes-dominance. though luciano was at times sloppy. in particular his phrasing. but i digress. sloppy amongst Demi-gods is like arguing between gold and platinum..i fully concur in that Fritz is also my favorite Lyric tenor...his delivery and artistry was second to none...had he lived a longer life, he would have been known as one of the greatest tenors of all time...his repertoire was extensive...between operettas, lieders, and operas and as a musician this man was simply the purest embodiment of an artistic prodigy...Jawohl!
Perfection. Beautiful line, never oversung, spot on intonation, restraint throughout. He truly has no equal that I've heard in this rep. This is the model for how to sing this aria.
He didnt try to outsing the piano (because thats impossible for every human voice) but he felt the piano a hundred percent and therefore the piano became his voice... He has to be the best singer ever
Julio has it right. True,😢 Wunderlich was not here for us to hear him in his later years. But he did give us the most beautiful singing of the years he had. (And all the years since.) I found him accidentally when I bought some recordings just after his death - I suppose some thought he would disappear into the attic - but he didn’t - those to whom I’ve introduced his recordings are amazed they hadn’t heard of him. We should continue to keep the great from the past alive with the technology of today and find more ways to celebrate our present great living artists as well.
One of the greatest Singers of all time: the voice of an Angel, such beauty, such clarity, such joy....a terrible tragedy we lost him so young: much missed,R.I.P
This was the first Tamino I ever heard (when I was about 3 years old) and he is still just the best. It is so great music and done so extraordinary beautiful. Every note is just like a little wonder. Love it.
I just bought a CD of Wunderlich today - imagine to hear the perfection of his singing even many times more colourful than here on UA-cam! Thanks to UA-cam we have the chance of being reminded of this highest of the highest estimated tenors, but: You won't believe how many times more overwhelming the beauty of his voice is when listening to it in a high-definition recording. Has anyone heard and seen him (a)live? That must have been a glimpse of heaven ... Only the good die young ... !
EMOZIONANTE!
An amazing singer to study. the younger generations need to be studying all these great singers and also the great singers prior to Fritz's generation.
One of the most impressive videos on UA-cam. A rare live testimony of one of the greatest lyric tenors of all times. Unfortunately 155 thumbs down-the today's reality of ignorance and no taste..
There are so many things about this performance that I enjoy. I do not, however, enjoy how easy he makes it look. Congratulations, Mr. Wunderlich. No one can/will ever surpass this amount of ease singing this aria.
I can never, ever listen to the perfection of Wunderlich, without remembering my father as well. Oh my God. How I miss them both. Es gibt einen Zusammenhang! Thank you so much for this...Mein herz mit neuer Regung fuellt. (sorry, my "umlaut" disappeared) und Jetzt...
What a wonderful lyric tenor voice.Beautiful timbre and tone and very good technique. What a shame he died such a tragic death at such a young age.I believe he was destined for international stardom. Bravissimo!
The very 1st time I ever began listening & collecting tenor recordings, I was used 2 hearing Pav as being the all time best & others just as great like Gigli & all. But...when I played Wunderlich 4d very 1st time...man, was that an experience!!! I found myself saying: This guy's just in a class of his own:) Everything was Gorgeous! The voice, technique, phrasing, diction, etc:) Just amazing!!!
My father introduce me to Fritz Wunderlich in the early 1960's. What a terrible loss to have him depart at 36, two weeks before his premiere at the Met. I hang on his every phrase in appreciation of his amazing talent and artistry, and memory of my father who loved beauty so much.
His breath technique is not perfect. Watch again. Early in the aria he is using clavicular (high breathing) where his shoulders rise and fall. That is not efficient or good breath technique, which makes it all the more amazing how well he sang this aria and how easy it sounded.
Wunder, Wunder, Wunderlich!!!!!
Everyone is talking about his voice (which is truly exceptional) but what makes this recording even more great is his phenomenal phrasing. The lines are always made up with perfect subtle crescendi and decrescendi.
This really is the definitive version of this aria. A blueprint for all lyric tenors to strive for. Words cannot describe the beauty of his singing.
This man leaves me speechless everytime i hear him. The most beautiful tenor voice i`ve ever heard.
I call him the best vocalist of all recorded times
and, with a slightly different timbre, a lighter voice, for Lieder vs opera, the Danish Axel Schiotz...
@@julioverne579 I have to disagree :D
I like Josef Greindl a lot more. E.g. "Der Schatzgäber" from Carl Loewe with Michael Raucheisen.
He was pavarottis big inspiration... he said no one can sing like him
Greatest lyric tenor of 20th century along with Nocolai Gedda.
Perfection. He had no equal in this role.
In my opinion, the best lyric tenor of all time. What an iconic voice.
Luciano adored him!
Well said, Kirk.

you are not alone with this opinion
He and Mario Lanza. Both similar characters too - charming and honest.
Incomparable! Never to be equalled...ever. All Taminos past present should be in AWE of this definitive performance.
This is pure magic.
Amazing! My favourite tenor ever...
my favourite tenor!! what a voice!
I never imagined how beautiful a human tenor voice could be-or any human sound-until I heard Fritz Wunderlich sing Mozart.
Or Schumann, or Schubert, or…
For me, the greatest tenor who ever lived.
Tha even confirmed Maestro Pavarotti.
Perfection. Beautiful line, never oversung, spot on intonation, restraint throughout. He truly has no equal that I've heard in this rep. This is the model for how to sing this aria.
One of the greatest voices ever to be captured for our listening pleasure... He will be remembered as the genius he was.
My favourite Mozart tenor aria. No one does it better than Fritz. He deserved a standing ovation from this audience.
I have not listened to the more perfect voice than Wunderlich so far !! He is forever.
A glorious talent taken from this world tragically young. RIP Fritz Wunderlich. I hope your beautiful voice fills heaven.
This is a rare instance of perfection.
"Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schoen!" Bravo! Beautiful performance!
He didnt try to outsing the piano (because thats impossible for every human voice) but he felt the piano a hundred percent and therefore the piano became his voice... He has to be the best singer ever
His voice, his voice was enchantingly beautiful - as they only once exist
Wunderlich war einfach nur wundervoll.

Der größte Sänger - auch 2021 noch! Gänsehaut-Feeling garantiert. Italienischer Schmelz in der Stimme, unübertroffen!
This is uncredibly beautiful. I felt a tear roll down my cheek.
Absolutely divine!! Best Tamino ever!
So simple yet to touching
Egal ob Orchester oder nur Klavier. Bei Wunderlich klingt es immer wunderschön
How could Fritz have ANY negative responses?! The greatest lyric tenor of the 20th c. & possibly of all time.
Truly baffling isn’t it.

Wunderlich is by far the best Mozartian tenor of our times..... and the best Tamino.... how beautiful............
Fritz Wunderlich,einfach unvergleichlich.Dieses Timbre,diese unvergleichliche Empfindsamkeit....BRILLANT!
Bravissimo!
One of the greatest Singers of all time: the voice of an Angel, such beauty, such clarity, such joy....a terrible tragedy we lost him so young: much missed,R.I.P

The mighty Wunderlich makes it all look so easy.
Not only one of the greatest lyric tenors, but one of the greatest renditions of the aria "Dies' Bildnis ist bezaubernd schon" - how lucky we are!
Best Tamino!)
What a pity that this great singer died so young ... really
The best Tamino without a second thought 👏
What a shame to have lost this voice in such a sad way.......God Bless and keep him.
Without question one of the greatest singers and most beautiful voices of all time. This performance is beyond compare.
How angelic and beautiful ~~~~

A wonderful voice!

Definitely one of the greatest tenors ever. So much easy power all the way though. Ah! So beautiful.

His voice is angelic. I have always loved Wunderlich. His Lieder are fantastic, too!
Just perfect. A great, great tenor. Thank you for posting.

Ich war 2 Jahre alt als er verunglückte. Meine Oma erzaehlte mir davon.
So unbelievably beautiful. Wunderlich is just unmatched singing this aria.
Oddly enough, that is what he is singing about in this song (adorable beauty)!
Bezaubernd schoen!
ich bin mir sicher, mozart wäre hellauf begeistert! wunderbarer wunderlich!
The end of this aria (3:17 or so until the end) is not supposed to sound this easy! STUNNINGLY beautiful!!!
indeed. such an artist
The best Tamino ever!!!!!
One of the best videos on UA-cam.
Magic.
absolut!

chiaroscuro! look at his mouth and his tongue- nobodys singing in this stile anymore
A perfect rendition of one of the hardest arias to sing. A true master at work, bravo!
voice of heaven. Artistic! Very sad for his early death
such a beautiful color of the voice. lovely.
Beautiful voice!!

Wunderlich une merveilleuse voix.
C'est simplement '' WUNDERBAR ''.
Again I say "This man was one of the All Time Greats"
So sad his untimely death but thanks technology for enabling us to hear him today.
Yes, it’s fortunate that he made so many recordings.

Impresionante la belleza de su voz. Me encanta.
Great sound and ring in his voice without sounding manufactured and hooty. Lovely. As many have said, such a shame he died so young.
