    In this video you state that 'si' is never used with the conditional tense, I however have found a lot of sentences that do use it.
    For example: « Je ne sais pas si j'aurais pu faire ça. » (si + conditionnel passé)
    How can one know in which cases to use the conditional after 'si'?

    • @Frencheezee
      @Frencheezee  9 років тому +2

      +fsef This is one of the rare exceptions. While it is true that generally speaking you never use the conditional after si, it can be used in instances in which the si clause doesn't refer to a condition. In effect, in the example you gave, you're stating a fact, not a condition, so the rule doesn't apply... French can be so confusing!
      Même si j'avais eu le matériel nécessaire, je ne sais pas si j'aurais pu le faire. (si + pluperfect / present / si + past conditional)
      [Even if I had had the necessary equipment, I don't know if I could have done it.]
      Si + pluperfect because it expresses a condition in the past, you didn't have the equipment, but what if you had had it. It doesn't express a fact.
      Présent: brings you back to the time you're speaking. Right now, you don't know.
      Si + past conditional: does not express a condition, it is a fact that you don't know if you could have done it.
      To make it clear, think about:
      Si j'avais pu le faire, je l'aurais fait.
      Si j'avais pu le faire: Si + pluperfect expresses a condition. You doing it did not happen. But you would have done it if, and only IF you could have. So, si j'avais pu le faire (If I could have done it) expresses a condition... Je l'aurais fait (I would have done it) expresses a fact.
      To sum up, the conditional tense can only be used after si if it expresses a fact and not a condition...
      I know this sounds contradictory... but that's the way it is!
      Hope this helped, and thanks for asking as, at the time I made this lesson, this exception had escaped my mind!
      So this was a very good question, which I'm sure will help others too. :)

      Because in French when refering to another person by name they will say literally "ask to paul". Its like saying "give it to her/him"

    Hi You said the conditional tense is never used with or after "si".
    But you used it before.
    Like si tu veux de l'aide.demande à .. bat you used it here
    S'il pouvait je resterais l'intérieur.
    Would you like to explain it please

    Pourquoi est-ce que le futur et le conditional sont trés similare. Comment est-ce que je saurai si une personne est parler dans le conditional ou le futur ? Corriger moi si mon français n'est pas correct! I want to be fluent in French some day just as you are!

    • @Frencheezee
      @Frencheezee  9 років тому +1

      +Jjdabest "si une personne parle au conditionnel ou au futur".
      Well the conditional and future don't have the same endings... Once you know these endings by heart, the only ones you could get confused with are the "je" forms, as although spelt differently ( -ais & -ai), the S being silent they sound similar. Some would argue that in the conditional ais is pronounced è while ai in the future is pronounced é. But in truth this is not always the case. So, in order to not get confused, learn the endings by heart, maybe make up a few example sentences that make it obvious whether the verb is in the future or conditional, and learn those too. As an example: faire in the future: je ferAI, tu ferAS, il ferA, nous ferONS, vous ferEZ, ils ferONT. Je ferai mes devoirs demain. Tu feras tes devoirs demain.... I will do my / You will do your homework tomorrow... In the conditional: Je ferAIS, tu ferAIS, il ferAIT, nous ferIONS, vous ferIEZ, ils ferAIENT. S'il l'aimait il le ferait. If he loved her he would do it.
      By the way, don't beat yourself up if it takes you a while to remember things, French grammar can be confusing and difficult even for native speakers! There is a very good reason why French kids are still learning French grammar when they're 15+ ...
      I consider myself lucky I didn't have to learn French as a second language. I believe English is much easier to learn :P
      That said, it may take time, but every victory, small as it might be, is very rewarding. It's not always about the destination, but about the journey. Enjoy the journey! :)

    Donc on ne peut pas dire: "si je pourrais écrire une lettre au policier ?" Je me demandais parce que il semble que cette phrase soit correcte, peut-être, puisque je ne sais pas une autre façon de l'écrire. Si vous pouvez m'aider, je serais bien heureux ! Merci !

    • @codytheawe5omeizawe5ome33
      @codytheawe5omeizawe5ome33 7 років тому

      Aussi, la phrase que j'ai écrite "si je pourrais écrire une lettre au policier.." n'est pas une phrase complète donc elle ne parle pas d'une idée complète. Et j'apprends toujours le français donc je suis désolé si j'ai fait plusieurs fautes dans ce commentaire...

    Pourquoi tu n'as pas dit "demandez/demandes a Paul" mais tu dis "demande" (par example "Je demande"?) Chui confus >.

    • @Frencheezee
      @Frencheezee  9 років тому

      +Imy Manz Parce que "demande" est à l'impératif et non au présent de l'indicatif. À l'impératif, les verbes du premier groupe ne prennent pas de "s" à la deuxième personne du singulier, contrairement au présent. :)
