This video contains an excerpt of an interview with Mary Lou Lord along with my narration explaining the interview. I talk about how the two met and the details surrounding their time together. Through research i have done on this topic i go more in-depth about how this relationship started and ultimately how it would end.

One of the sweetest saddest things I've ever heard Marylou say was about Kurt Cobain and Elliot Smith, because she was the only person who was very close to both of them. She said that she wishes that Kurt lived long enough to meet Elliot because she's certain that he would have LOVED his music and that they would have gotten along well personally too. She went on to say that she has this vision of them keeping each other going and helping one another, possibly averting tragedies. Perhaps naive given they could have been drug addicted together and indulged in their mutual destruction, but a beautiful bittersweet optimistic vision from the kind hearted Mary-Lou
That friendship may well have blossomed into some truly inspiring, heartfelt music.

In the ‘90s, you could occasionally see Mary Lou Lord playing at the Park Street train stop in Boston or Harvard Square, Cambridge. Down to Earth woman.
As a street busker with that immediate connection to the public on a one to one level as a partner she would perhaps have been a more able guide for Kurt when his incredibly overwhelming level of fame appeared.

She still plays near Fenway on occasion. I ran into her after an Aerosmith show last summer, and we hung out after she was done playing.

Yeah. I don't think there was much talk about gut health, bacteria (good and bad) and probiotics back then when he was suffering.

Interesting. I was just re-reading Heaver Than Heaven and the photographer Michael Lavine talks about Kurt showing him a sore in his mouth and his infected gums.
Not long before Cobain died, he was cured of his stomach complaints by a chiropracter who realised that during Kurt's childhood, when he suffered from scoliosis which is an unnatural curvature of the spine, that certain nerves associated with reporting pain and discomfort messages from the the stomach, had become constricted and were pinched between vertebrae.
Once the chiropractor manipulated Kurt's spine the nerves were, for the first time since the disease had developed during his childhood, at last freed and his 'stomach issues' completely ceased, effectively cured.
Cobain himself mentioned in an interview this information and how since this had happened he actually found it difficult to sing since he 'd been cured because, formerly, when singing he had mentally used the ever present sensation of pain and discomfort as a source for energy to put into his vocal expression. @@HeatherM0891

8:41 she's right about the stomach issue, there are scans of Kurt's charts from doctor visits dating back to 1990-ish complaining of severe epigastric pain. And this isn't a person who has the money to go to the doctor at this time in his life.

Anxiety can cause stomach issues for a lot of people. I think his stomach issues were mostly psychosomatic and using heroin calmed him down.

Yeah I'm better and you know who is staying away from me I don't talk to him just pretend he's invisible if he comes into the room I leave and I have to wear a mask now at all times because he is of course got the job and boosters and everything so he thinks that he's invincible and can't spread it or give it to anybody or get it when it says all the time on the news even when they're advertising the shots that you can still get it just some people are complete a holes!

I mean, it's not like dating solves all of your problems - and it's also not like someone who is not mentally in a good state can't date people either. You wouldn't say it's strange that he made a friend in that time period, it's just as *not strange* that he had girlfriends. The determining factor is whether other people want to be around him and like being around him.
Kurt lost his soul to heroin and drugs. I don't doubt he had depression, but him turning to heroin is 100% the reason he was such a sad and depressed person. I"m sure if not for that he would have made it out of his angst years fine.

Agreed. There was a definite play up that I am only able to see after many MANY years have passed. In my youth I thought he could do no wrong and hung on every word. It's just not reality though. I also highly doubt the stomach issues (at least the severity he claimed) because I've lost very close people who would scream of being "in pain" in order to get drugs. I always will love Kurt, but he was only human after all. A very flawed one at that.

In that Axis Nightclub interview with Nirvana, Kurt seems very tired and doesn't hardly talk at all and has his head resting in his hand.. He was exhausted
I remember the MTV music award thing, the one when Kurt, Courtney and Francis were there together. Sometime before the event Kurt and Courtney had an argument which Kurt had butted out a cigarette on his forehead in frustration. When it came time to appear at the award ceremony, make-up artists did a really good job of hiding the cigarette burn on his head. There was a very iconic photo taken of Kurt that evening, the one where he is wearing the black and white striped shirt. If you look at it closely, you can see a big lump on his forehead.
If only Kurt had stayed with her! Instead of getting hoodwinked by Courtney.

According to the Heavier Than Heaven biography (which, to be fair, reads like fan fiction in some parts, as if the author interviewed people who knew Kurt, took them at face value, then filled in the gaps with his imagination & assumptions), Kurt flat-out asked Mary Lou if she'd do heroin with him and she told him to never mention that again, whereas Courtney was willing to be his lover AND drug partner. She was also viciously jealous and threatened not only Mary Lou but Tracy Marander and Kristen Pfaff to stay away from Kurt "or else" (and Pfaff suspiciously died of an OD when returning to Seattle for only a week after moving home to Minneapolis and being sober for months following Kurt's death).
...isn't it sweet they had THAT FRIENDSHIP together 🌼 Kurt needed 'that type' of friendship more in his life. Someone real & down to earth (the riding on the back of a bicycle is epic)!

They also all agree suicide, so don't even try and pull the "biased" shit.

As someone who’s been through a very long, nasty heroin addiction I can say that you don’t want to screw someone like this up no matter how much you like them. You love them more to let them go. Kurt and Courtney were both “tortured souls” to a degree. They both dealt with mental illness issues. I think Kurt probably loved this Mary Lou girl enough to let her go and stuck with Courtney because she was as damaged as he felt he was. Kurt’s death was his own choice, and fault. Courtney did not cause him to do what he did to himself anymore than anyone else. She had to pick up the pieces and raise their child alone and I give her a whole lot of credit for standing up and doing what she needed to in order to raise their baby while the entire world blamed her for Kurt’s death! Before we judge and hurt people with negativity we should really put ourselves in their shoes. Nobody ever made me self destruct with heroin, I made ME do that! If I walked away from people like Mary Lou that came in to my own life it’s because I felt they were less damaged than myself. I couldn’t love me or accept being alive trapped in my own body. It took me 42 years to get to this point of even understanding why I did what I did. That’s how trapped I feel sometimes still to this day. Luckily, finally just trying to care about myself a tad bit is what brought a whole lot of revelations to me about my own behaviors. It doesn’t make me any less likely to relapse in the future and I know that but at least there is some semblance and understanding that I have gained!

@@aaroncross1287 Courtney and Frances lived together for 15 YEARS and she tried to raise Frances the best she could as a drug addict (and made sure a nanny was around 24/7). Let's recap:
-1992: KC&CL lose custody and FBC's guardian is Courtney's sister, Jaimee Rodriguez. She lives with K&C until they regain custody.
-1993-2003: CL and FBC live together in Seattle and in LA.
-2004: CL loses custody and FBC's guardian is CL's step-father, Frank Rodriguez. He moves into their house and Courtney lives next door.
- 2005-2009: CL & FBC live together in LA.
- 2009: FBC asks for emancipation at 17 and guardianship goes to Kim Cobain for a few months until she turns 18.
As a bonus track, let me tell you that Kurt's half-sister, Brianne O'Connor, lived with CL&FBC in LA when she was 15-16 because Wendy asked CL for help since Brianne was being difficult in Olympia, WA.

There’s an interview somewhere with Mary Lou saying Courtney was pregnant and that’s why Kurt went back with her. But the dates don’t add up, unless she was pregnant for 10 months, something like that.
Mary Lou also said that she continued sleeping when Courtney called Kurt and that the day after Kurt just told her how was she going to get to his next stop. That was the last time they spoke. So how could Mary know what Courtney told him? She's also said that Kurt never mentioned Courtney but in Evertt True's book she starts saying the same and then ends implying that Kurt did say some nasty things about Courtney.
She just can't accept Kurt liked Courtney better, and it's been 31 years.

Tbh does come across as a groupie sex situation maybe Kurt felt this. Then when he went with Courtney it was wild and got him out of himself then Courtney got pregnant, so Kurt did the right thing and stuck by Courtney and Frances. Don't forget with everything in the media about Kurt and Courtney and Kurt's death plus threats by Courtney it would have made her feel if only he was with her things may have been different. He started dating Courtney when they met in the summer and on October 12 Courtney found him in his apartment with another woman, who happened to be his girlfriend (he had been cheating from day one). That night, Nirvana was playing there and Kurt and Courtney slept together. That same day, MLL had returned to Boston and wasn't around when Courtney arrived and spent the night with Kurt.
Kurt had known Courtney longer, she was playing the same venues he was playing, she was interviewed for the same magazines he was, they had mutual friends, they kept bumping into each other... On the other hand, Mary Lou was a stranger Kurt was getting to know. And what I think happened and why Mary blames Courtney is because Mary hid from Kurt she was a hardcore Nirvana fan from the Bleach days, and Courtney found out (and probably told him). Mary impressed Kurt because she played him six Nevermind songs when the album had just been released and failed to tell him she had had a Nevermind advanced copy for months. Then she showed up in England unexpectedly to surprise him on November 4 because she hadn't seen him since he slept with Courtney on October 12. And the following day, Courtney had an interview with a friend of Mary in Boston and told her about Mary's existence. Honestly, if I were Courtney I would have told Kurt she was a fan too. It's on Mary for not being honest.

I know this was before Internet became a household thing but they had released Bleach and done a lot of interviews in media that I'm sure someone so knowledgeable about music as she was would have seen or read.

Courtney said Kurt didn't know where to get heroin but she did; he'd used it but availability was an issue & she could solve that - he wanted a girlf to take drugs with, & likely would've found one sooner or later. Maybe a partner who disliked off-stage attention as much as he did might've helped; less stress - CL attracted the limelight - but he'd still have a drug problem.

Mary Lou is the opposite of Courtney. I agree with everyone who says he shouldve stayed with Mary Lou. They dont even need to marry...but i bet he would be happy and alive. How he was attracted to Courtney...who freaking knows. Sometimes people are drawn to the crazy ones.

I also read from a very old FB post from Mary Lou that once KC was in the middle of this huge success with Geffen records, CL allegedly left her death threats by phone x amount of times on a daily basis and then Frances Bean came 5 seconds later. The heroin habit also followed immediately. Poor Kurt, how much misery he had to endure in those 3 years of musical success. He never felt healthy nor happy. In the 2021 BBC documentary the entourage mentioned he had a mental breakdown in Italy much earlier than the Nevermind success. Only God knows what exactly happened at what exact timing. His memory will be always remembered 💖.
I heard an interview where Kurt admits using drugs to not feel his stomach pain , I believe him because I have always had stomach pain .

Nirvana and Courtney's band toured Cali and Mexico in the following weeks and Kurt and Courtney continue seeing each other. Kurt travels to the UK and Courtney stays in the US touring. K&C called each other every day. Mary Lou hadn't seen Kurt since Oct 12, so she goes to the UK on her own and stays in Kurt's hotel room. The next day, on Nov 5, Courtney is in Boston, Mary Lou's hometown, where a DJ tells Courtney that Mary Lou is Kurt's girlfriend and that she's with Kurt in the UK. When Courtney returns to her hotel, she calls Kurt at 3am and asks him if what she's been told is true. Kurt denies he's with Mary Lou (even though she's there) and the next morning Kurt dumps Mary Lou. Two days after, Kurt says in The Word that Courtney is the best f* ck in the world and Mary Lou finds out about Courtney.
Later, Kurt said that he didn't know how to get rid of Mary Lou in a nice way and that's why he didn't tell her to leave until Courtney found out. And Mary Lou says Courtney told Kurt some lies about her on that 3am phone call and that Courtney ruined her relationship with Kurt. That's the story
Such a shame, I think she sounds way smarter, and that, that relationship would have inspired great music. Kurt probably only picked courtney in service to the image he wanted to convey, and not the relationship that he probably actually wanted to have.

As far as any of us can tell from this distance, any of those women would have been a great stepmother for Frances. If (and it is indeed an "if") those mysterious plane tickets Kurt bought were intended for him to take Frances (once Courtney or the nanny or whoever brought Frances back to Seattle) and fly to MN and join Kristen, the story might have been headed in that direction.

Nevermind was released in September and the European tour was in Nov&Dec. Nevermind didn't start selling until November, that's why it's usually said that Kurt was in Europe when Nirvanamania broke.
