      Rakeem Beckett-Scott This is fact. I followed all the lego stories since 2001 and bionicle could be anything. Romance, horror, heroism, western, adventure, mystery. Just everything (Greg Farshtey said that himself). Ninjago is somehow its spiritual successor (but its sidestories aren't great). Bionicle 2015 had great sets, but the story wasn't that great.

    To be honest, Lego showed little love for Bionicle Gen 2. They gave it a very small team to work with, with more focus on the toyline than the story itself. They didn't try at all to make the sets appealing to kids besides a few online videos and on-the-box comics. They created a very short television series that was privatized to Netflix instead of a public channel like Cartoon Network. It's no wonder why they failed. Even Ninjago and Nexo Knights got a much larger startup, Lego didn't even give Bionicle Gen 2 a chance!

    • @NinjaTyler
      @NinjaTyler 7 років тому +33

      Carum Sarene agreed, and the new sets were too clunky, it felt like they slapped together a team from the heroes team to push this out instead of a passion project, the heart is what got most of us into bionicle, this just was "eh let's entertain the fans wants and throw this at them, see how they like it and maybe we'll make money out of it.

      Same can be said about 2015's Pirates. Didn't have a single TV commercial, was exclusive to selected toy stores in some countries, and only lasted one year. It's a shame because Pirates is one of LEGO's core classics, and was really big when it first came out with lore and stuff, but the only things LEGO put faith into now are licenses and Ninjago successors.

    • @Jeddostotle7

      Carum Sarene Netflix has surpassed cable in terms of viewership/subscription. Putting something on Netflix is not limiting its success. In fact, it often increases its success. See: any Netflix original series actually produced by Netflix, the Marvel Netflix series, Voltron: Legendary Defender, etc. etc.

      honestly post like these make really happy because it lets me know that there are other true and dedicated fans to the series that agree that the new gen is just trying to get a quick pay rather then putting the love they had in the original

    Fun fact: Lego would have gone out of business if not for Bionicle. Bionicle was one of their first attempts at making their own story. Having an entire world with unique characters really resonated with people. Before Bionicle, it was mostly lego City and the closest they had to storytelling was Star Wars (and a lot of those profits went to Lucasfilm).

    Actually, Jungle was an elemental power in the first generation of Bionicle and went under the name "the green" or "Plantlife". Matoran of this element were called Bo-Matoran and their armor had green as a primary and blue as a secondary color.
    By extension, there were also Matoran of Gravity (Ba), Psionics (Ce), Sonics (De), Magnetism (Fa), Iron (Fe), Plasma (Su) and Lightning (Vo).

    • @Unkle_Genny
      @Unkle_Genny 7 років тому +3

      Keva the Half-Kestora And, if I'm correct, Lightning and Psionics were all female, just like Water, and the others are all male.

    • @HunhowsShadowStalker
      @HunhowsShadowStalker 7 років тому +3

      Mark Miller Right, however, when it came to Psionics, there was one exception to the rule. Toa Orde was the first Toa of Psionics and was male. He tried to use his powers to calm down a Zyglak, but his own temper only made the Zyglak angrier. So, the Great Beings decided that every Ce-Matoran and Toa of Psionics from then on would be female, as they tended to be more gentle.

      It's highly unlikely that Bionicle will ever return. It's been cancelled twice now, no company would bring a franchise back a third time after two failures (not that G1 was a failure, but it _did_ end prematurely).
      Best move on to new things, and stop clinging to the past. Let the memories stay as what they are; memories, and fond ones at that.

    I became a fan when it all began. BIONICLE was one of the pillars of my teen years, and we still have a plastic tub filled with all the old sets, and even a stack of the original comics (though I have to handle them carefully since my and several of my brothers loved reading them repeatedly at that time).

  • @cagegames4755
    @cagegames4755 3 роки тому +17

    The problem had nothing to do with the sets. The problem was that they relied on the old fans to keep it successful but it backfired. The old fans don't like the new sets and they couldn't get new fans because they had a 4 or 5 episode Netflix series and a mini-series on youtube. If they had gotten Bionicle onto cartoon network and ran a couple adds it coulda been really successful.

  • @YayaFeiLong
    @YayaFeiLong 7 років тому +7

    I must say though, the series _really_ took a dark turn right about the time it established that "Makuta" was not a name so much as a title, culminating in Teridax _leaving seven his own brethren to die by Energy Storm simply because he feared they would turn against him._
    Also, can we take a moment to establish the fact that the Great Spirit Robot was 40 million feet tall? That's 7575.76 _miles._ For comparison, the Earth's diameter is 7917.5 miles, meaning this robot is almost as tall as the Earth.

  • @CharzaKitsune
    @CharzaKitsune 7 років тому +47

    soooo... you didn't cover Makuta's plan... i will be honest: best ending ever!
    also, had the immense pleasure of meeting Stuart Seiger once at a museum. He was an amazingly nice guy and even told me about his artistic choices in the book:
    [Here thar be spoilers ahead!]
    In his last issue that he worked on, which ended with Matoro using the Mask Of Life, one panel that he took real pride in resembled Da Vinchi's famous human sketch of man as a machine. He invisioned Matoro's last heroic act as "Machine Becoming Man" in his ultimate sacrifice. Needless to say, I was at a loss for words when he told me this.... a shame that it took me 6-8+ Years to share this story.

      It was even a misconception that it was a legal matter, in case you didn't know. People assume LEGO trademarked the words, which they didn't, and they didn't actually get sued either at all. Only threatened. It was a purely emotional matter, and was settled out of court. You will find confirmation of this in an interview in a Danish newspaper.

      The fact that Toys R Us still has any on the shelves a year after the series was cancelled is a clear indicator that very few people were buying them. Compare that to G1 sets that, at the height of Bionicle's popularity, would regularly sell out weeks or days after hitting shelves.

    Great lists... sill, some facts were overlooked.
    For one, during the 90s Lego did come up with a lot of original characters and lines before the Star Wars LIP, including Johnny Thunder, Time Cruisers, the characters of Wild West, Rock Raiders was made during Star Wars' launch, and Lego Island's roaster I guess was made for them. Though they didn't have a on-going story but were more episodic.
    Other story driven Bionicle birthed were Knights Kingdom II & Exo-Force

    My first set was Toa Gali. Got this way back when it just released in 2001. Did'nt even know Gali was a girl at the time. Didnt know about Bionicle storyline either. Then when I got Tahu a few months later, I was sold and hooked on the Bionicle theme and story. I then collected all toa, all bohrok, then all of the Toa nuva, bahragh twins, Takanuva and Makuta. Little bit later on I just got Vakama from the metru nui line. Then stopped collecting because I started going to highschool. I still have all of my sets in a box, put in the attic. But I have the original 2001 Toa Tahu, displayed on my desk. He was my Red Ranger, my Mario, my Spiderman, my Superman. That thing was like my favorite toy ever. Despite it being the second bionicle I owned, I always played with him as my champion. It was probably the last toy I played with, before going into puberty. Effectively marking the end of my childhood as I went into highschool.
    Years down the line and Bionicle was on its last legs and the stars line came out. I was about 20/21 years old. For the heck of it and nostalgia, I bought Stars Tahu, build it and was serverly dissapointed. I held him next to my OG Tahu that was on my desk in comparison. Stars Tahu didnt look right. No more lego technic parts, and too oversimplified. Put it back in the canister and now it sits in the storage box as well. While my 2001 Tahu still stands on my desk.
    Long post but heres a potato 🥔

      I would love to see their reaction to this:D in fact i hope its their own version with better facts. i have no idea why but Frederator took the most boring and inane facts to recite:( I mean who cares if they have their own cypher language or had the voice of Scott McNeil when not only was it revealed the entire setting took place within the God character but they planned it from the very beginning and was inspired by one of the creators imagining the medicine he took for cancer being little soldiers he sent into his body to fight off an evil tumor monster?

      Hey there, Adrian here. I LOVE TTV, and would be happy to include them in a future video (if we ever do one). Now the question is... do we pick Eljay or someone else? I watch most of his reviews and his latest podcast-y stuff, so I'm more familiar with him. Let me know!
      Now, about the facts. I, myself, am a huge fan of Bionicle (been buying them since 2001!), but we weren't sure exactly how Bionicle would perform with the audience. I don't believe we've ever done a LEGO line on the channel, and it was something a bit new to us (other than 107 LEGO movie). We didn't want to get too deep into the lore unless we knew the people on the channel actually liked Bionicle! Because, c'mon, the lore gets a little crazy once the Inika came into the story. Multiple Makuta, the Great Beings, Karzhani & Artakha, literally everything Greg Farshtey was writing after the Bara Magna arc ended, etc. That stuff might have been a little too deep.

Rerelease the Mata Nui arc, make a Netflix series using high quality CGI, and start the merchandising! Seriously, they already had a gold mine filled with gold, why didn't they just go back into it instead of opening a brand new mine?

    I remember there was a browser based adventure game for Bionicle around the second or third series of the toys, and it was blatantly unfinished. It wasn't the one told through a first person perspective, the player was a villager from the water nation and collected shells and crap to gather weeds before they could go further. But there was one screen that the player could reach where it was, literally, unfinished artwork where the artists did the pencils but did nothing else and it blocked progression through the rest of the game.
    I'd like to think the people who worked on that game now make games for Steam Greenlight.
