Heres one of my theory idk if its canon or not but still Kokichi has a condition called a lying disorder which is a Pathological lying, also known as mythomania and pseudologia fantastica, is the chronic behavior of compulsive or habitual lying. Unlike telling the occasional white lie to avoid hurting someone's feelings or getting in trouble, a pathological liar seems to lie for no apparent reason.
ok but if he said maki, they would of thought the lying detector was broken and then he could of get away with the last answer because judging by the fact that kokichi trusts noone except for shumai he would probably guess that tsumugi could do something like that because afterall everyone is kinda curious about his actual response on the serious questions. just a thought lol
