Kinda hard to believe PEDs are not involved in something like that. I’m not saying it’s not possible that he came back that fast from that kind of injury, but it’s a little bit suspicious that they don’t want to disclose any information.

As someone with 20+ years in the fitness industry some of which was in PT/Rehab settings, I agree...BUT as I've often told people (with the exception of impact injuries) knee issues are almost never knee issues they're foot and ankle issues or hip issues. I think the hip stuff is accurate here, but no mention of the feet at all? I would argue that's probably a bigger issue (did you see LeBron's ugly feet on IG?) These guys are in shoes that squash their feet and have arch support so week feet create a weak base which creates instability up the chain. That dude needs to fix his feet 100%. I will die on this hill!
@Myaaa-kf2we yeah knees are relatively simple (as far as joints or really anything in the human body goes). Tight hips will cause all sorts of down stream issues. As will foot/ankle issues and cause up stream issue and BBall guys wear squishy shoes with too much arch support and constantly roll ankles. Doc, what’s your opinion of this “cartilage transplant” procedure? As someone who’s had numerous meniscus “cleanups” I’m intrigued. Actually never heard of such a medical procedure.
He can overcome this he needs to strengthen the leg muscles (including hip) and core to then compensate or make up for those muscles that have atrophied or gotten weaker then learn how to do everything from step one and set a goal
Yup but it’s expected for him to have some atrophy because he’s had a lot of surgeries on that knee. That’s why he’ll be out the entire year. They’re going to work on that he needs to add a little bit of weight. Which is the strength he will get
The last guy that had it needed a full replacement and was in his I believe 30s...meaning his body also couldn't heal as fast. Given Zo is in his 20s its fair to think his body may be able to recover a little better. Also ZOs issue is the first surgery was successful and he needed a MINOR tissue replacement not a MAJOR.
I just felt like his left foot was a bit to far over to the right side. If he moves his foot further to his left, I believe some of the balance issues would be solved. Of course, we would need to see way more reps to know for sure.
Nah, that is probably one of his knee rehab exercises. That is probably why he was so comfortable doing it and even thought about doing it. Standing from one leg from a chair isn't a normal way people choose to prove progress from a knee injury. Obviously, I am just guessing and stating an opinion. Good luck to Lonzo in the future.
Either way we praying for Zo. I got two good knees I wish I could give to bro. He give me a cool milly & he back In the league next season 😂😂 seriously tho. Good stuff zo.
Looks pretty good to me! The knee is moving in and out as he is aiming to maintain balance. This is completely normal and is an adjustment to the requirements he's putting on the muscles. He is aiming to keep his centre of mass over his base of support, hence the knee drops inwards some and he shifts his body over to that affected side. This will happen in pretty much everyone. If this doesn't happen then the person falls over. It's not about a weak glute min / med. He could train the crap out of those muscles but his knee would still need to move inwards (or he would need to shift over to the side) to maintain that COM over the BOS.
First thing I thought was there is so much instability there. Standing up is major muscle groups, stabilising muscles help avoid injury. So many people don’t get this. Great videos as always.
Hey Doc correct me if I am wrong. But with the Trendelenburg sign I believe the effected gluteus minimus and gluteus medius are on the contra lateral side from the dipped pelvis.
Have any of you tried this and seen how difficult it actually is? Repetitive one leg stands out of a chair isn't easy. Then again maybe it's just me, I have bad knees since my injury lol
Also : compensation thru left foot externally rotated - probably inner unit function subpar and text the ability of the eyes to properly track (I.e. no exophoria present)
love your content brian, but even healthy individuals without pain experience this shakiness and this is absolutely not an indication of glute medius weakness. people shake on one leg, people shake when they do planks. if his knees shook bilaterally and more than in the video then that would be a greater indication of an issue or if he had an abnormal gait.
Ok but to balance on one foot don’t we obviously need to shift some weight over and not stand symmetrically? The center of mass for most humans should be close to the midline of the body, and to stand on one leg is basically adding a fulcrum that doesn’t coincide with the center of mass. Asking one to stand up straight on one leg without shifting weight sounds to me like asking a lever not to tip over when its center of mass is not over the fulcrum.
3:34 okay I'm no expert in physiology whatsoever... but isn't the tilting of body at 3:36 simply to keep the balance (center of mass in the middle)? I mean regardless how strong his upper leg muscle is (or whatever it is called)... I think he literally has to have his upper body shifting left so the center of mass is in the middle, no?
This might be kind of random, but do you think the nba trainers we have today teach effective exercises that strengthen the body and tendons or do you think that there are some trainers out there that teach potentially harmful/non effective methods? I’ve seen a video of lonzo training and his form on a couple of exercises was concerning. I don’t know the full extent of nba training, but from what I’ve seen the style is not similar to bodybuilding. Do you think that if nba players exercised with the thought of hypotrophy, time under tension, full range of motion, and keeping a controlled tempo in mind, that they would be less prone to injury? I’ve been lifting for 3 yrs training with high intensity(especially the past year) and have yet to encounter an injury worse than an abdominal strain from overloading too much. Training this way has also taken my knee pain away and strengthened an injured tendon in my right forearm. I know recovery for nba players is a lot different because of how much cardio they do, so it might not be optimal to train like a bodybuilder, but I feel it’s worth mentioning.
Lonzo said “he’s on track” with his rehab so doc reiterated that fact. Stephen A was exposed for lying and making up “sources” saying Zo couldn’t get off a chair. Even when Zo is down, they go after him. Glad he put that 🤡 in his place.
Lonzo should t be doing this just to prove ajournalist wrong. I am surprised that he is not on crutches at his point of the rehab. Certainly a long way to go, but a comeback is possible if he takes is Time. Like a lot of others said before, he need to work on his mechanics in general. Fingers crossed for his full recovery.
call me crazy but i dont think him wobbling slightly has anything to do with his knee injury😭 anyone healthy leg or not standing on one leg wobbles its just a balance thing. especially standing up from sitting only using one leg ur supposed to wobble a little its just balancing yourself😭
I wanna make this comment before I watch Dr Sutterer's analysis: as a physio, Lonzo shows really poor control of his knee joint, and really poor proprioception of his lower limb position (his internal sense of where his leg and knee are without looking at them). Both of these issues will predispose him to a host of issues if he was to return to gameplay now. He likely has a very lengthy rehab period ahead of him to regain joint control and joint awareness, along with strength and eventual power/agility in his movements
Okay, now that I've watched this video, I have some further thoughts. I wouldn't say this video necessarily demonstrates weakness in the lateral hip muscles - it's entirely possible that they ARE weak, but this video is more indicative of proprioceptive loss than muscular weakness. Reason being that a cartilage procedure to the knee disrupts the knee's collateral ligaments and the sensory neurons inside the knee joint space, which are two major sources of proprioception afferent signals. Also, as mentioned in the video, it's been a couple of months since the surgery. Given Lonzo is a professional athlete, he undoubtedly has a team that would have minimised the lateral glute weakness as much as possible over these past couple of months. He likely would have been working on glute strengthening within days of his knee surgery. At two months post-op, I would expect Lonzo's glutes to have very similar strength to his prehabilitative strength
Proprioception is simply your bodies ability to understand spatial information about your limbs/joints. The neuromuscular control is what you body then does to control where your limbs are and how they move. Maybe it’s potatoe potato but I think neuromuscular control is the weakness here more so than proprioception. If he had had an acl or tendon injury then yes, but I think it’s just global disuse leading to the poor control. Either way, appreciate the insightful comments and thank you for all you do as a physio!!
@@BrianSuttererMD I reckon if we had access to Lonzo's left leg, we could place it in various positions of hip, knee, and ankle ROM with his eyes closed, and then ask him to "copy" that same position by actively moving his right leg. If we see him have difficulties accurately copying the position, we can reason that the afferent signals from his left limb are having trouble being sensed (or processed by his CNS, I suppose!), suggesting more of a pure proprioceptive loss. If we switched the scenario and asked him to copy a right limb position with his left limb, and he struggled to accurately replicate this positioning with his left leg, I think I would conclude he has more of a neuromuscular loss. Neither are necessarily mutually exclusive though :) Thanks for all your hard work on these videos. Love your insights and love seeing some critical thought on UA-cam!

Neither are necessarily mutually exclusive though :)
Thanks for all your hard work on these videos. Love your insights and love seeing some critical thought on UA-cam!
he played in shoes that are uncomfortable to walk in, forget about playing basketball in them
poor management, poor business team.
this is just a result. he's surrounded by vultures
Imagine if Lonzo drops another video reacting on this reaction video. Anyway I'm just kidding. I know he knows he should not because he still knows he's still on rehab process.
I’m not a doctor but it just looks like he is shaking because it hard to balance on one leg especially why getting up and down. It’s like when a cop tells you to stand on one leg and you lose your balance so you must be drunk.
He's a world class athlete. He should be able to perform it without compensation if he was truly healthy
this doc said this is hard, I decided to do it until I couldn't do it anymore, got to 5,230 without any issues. not hard to get up from a chair with 1 foot
🧢
Remember 1/3 of you Americans are obese so for the average American it's hard
I'm happy for Lonzo... I'm really HAPPY!!
First take is irrelevant nowadays anyway... I meant dish-ney!!
Lonzos career is over. Point is, he can’t/hasn’t played for YEARS.
Zoo’s legs so skinny it adds to his “Leg-acy”
I predicted Lonzo being out the league within 5 years back when he was drafted...looks like it is becoming reality
Let’s gooooo Lonzooo

Dang that leg looks really skinny. Hope his recovery is quick and smooth.
“Extremely challenging” to get out of a chair with one leg might be a bit much.
