    Does paying twice as much for PVC trim seem worth it to you?

      Before I found this video, I came to the same conclusion that I would rather pay 2 or 3 times for PVC. For me, I feel it is a waste of my time on earth to paint 200 linear feet of primed baseboard before installing it. PVC is just cut and go! So, I am happy to find out that my conclusion is reasonable. Thumbs up!

    I like using pvc it tools well, even when using a block plane. A precaution I do take is to use an n95 mask when cutting on the table saw. That fine pvc dust is a lung killer. Great product overall.

    • @TheExcellentLaborer
      @TheExcellentLaborer  3 роки тому +2

      Yes that’s something I failed to mention in this video. A mask would be something to wear when cutting. The dust would be hard on you! Thanks for the comment!

    Worked in the New England Seacoast with a GC for a while. All we used for exterior trim was Kleer or Azek PVC trimboards. Kind of necessary in that region.

    • @TheExcellentLaborer
      @TheExcellentLaborer  3 роки тому +1

      I can see why in that region. Lots of moisture. Thanks a lot from watching!

    Helpful video thanks! I am redoing my garage exterior trim and will use the PVC...or perhaps Hardiboard ? but likely PVC as easier to cut.

    gotta say i've had problems with the expansion and contraction with PVC outside and only have used it as trim on a garage. I'm in MN sooo it can get cold and HOT .... some places are perfect for pvc ... some parts of a building are perfect for natural materials

    • @TheExcellentLaborer
      @TheExcellentLaborer  3 роки тому +1

      Yes you are right about the expansion and contraction. I installed two boards together the other day were they but to each other contracted 1/8” by the next day. Other than that I like the stuff.

    • @shootnguns6075
      @shootnguns6075 Рік тому +1

      I was also concerned about the expanding and contracting because all your caulking seams will probably crack quicker with this pvc but i'm sure it has a great purpose. I was looking at either hardie cement trim or pvc trim and i think i'm still going to use hardie instead of pvc because hardie is pretty well rot resistent, hardie excepts any paint color (you can't use dark colors on pvc trim) and everybody down here in south Texas uses hardie anyway, so it's been tested where i live. I'm going to be trimming out my exterior windows and the outside corners and i want something to last longer than the wood trimming i have now.

    We are doing a bathroom renovation, using PVC trim for the moisture area. It is already finished in white, do I caulk ceiling, chair rail and baseboards? All the videos on trim show painting afterwards.. plus what do you recommend for nail filling?

    • @TheExcellentLaborer
      @TheExcellentLaborer  3 роки тому

      Hey Edie! Yes you still do all your normal caulking and you do not have to paint it if you don’t want to. I used a battery operated trim nailer using 16ga 2 1/2” nails. I’d recommend using a 15ga standard trim nail 2” using a hammer. Hope that helps!

    • @ediesteffan1197

      @@TheExcellentLaborer yes thanks so much! We used an air gun tool with finish nails they were just under 2” because we needed to get to some studs. The nail holes covered well with a wax pen.

    To install around a window would you just use adhesive or a brad nail gun or roofing gun or finish nailer?

    • @TheExcellentLaborer
      @TheExcellentLaborer  Рік тому

      Hey Chris! I would recommend using a finish nailer with galvanized nails. Then using exterior caulk to fill the holes. Hope that helps!

    Can I paint PVC exterior window trim dark brown? Why, or why not? Thank you!

    • @TheExcellentLaborer
      @TheExcellentLaborer  3 роки тому +2

      It is not recommended. Only light colors. The reason being it absorbs too much heat in the sunlight and will cause a material to break down and expand too much. Hope that helps!

    • @JT_70

      The builder of our home installed PVC clad windows with all PVC window trim and external casings, which he painted a dark musket brown. Every window that had direct sun exposure warped and had to be replaced, upstairs and downstairs. Most were double windows. We replaced them and painted them all a light color and have not had any further problems. I believe some windows are labeled with an LRV (Light Reflectance Value) which must be coordinated with the paint color to be used, which would also have an LRV rating.

    I would say it's as dent resistant as wood, so that's a non-issue :-] But holy crap, is this stuff expensive!!!

      It does have a classic look to it. Different houses can definitely benefit from wood compared to others.
