    I visited Hong Kong and mainland China to visit some hockey factories. In this video I visited two hockey factories that make hockey sticks. They make the sticks by hand, which I found really cool. I think bigger brands will have equipment to do some of these steps.

    When I was a kid back in the 1970's , everything was Made in Canada and there was a selection of countless brands of hockey sticks and other equipment. Now there seems to be a couple of big monopolies that control the whole industry.

    Great video. I used to work with carbon fiber products (different industry than hockey). I'm sure Bauer/CCM and other big name companies employ a little better manufacturing technology (and better quality control measures) but it's probably not much different to what you see in the video. What sets the knock-offs to high-end carbon products is, the quality in fiber materials (there is a difference in fiber weaves) and the way the fiber is laid-out in the product mold. Fiber materials, weave patterns, baking process are critical in achieving a good quality product. High-end carbon bikes, F1 racing cars, hockey sticks....there is no real automated way in laying out the carbon fiber products, so it's all pretty much done by hand. Without low-cost labor like China/Vietnam, etc to do this....our sticks would probably start at $200, just the reality of modern economics.

    I prefer soft ice. 30-32 degrees on a cloudy day or 25-27 degrees on a sunny day = perfect ice. Hard/glassy ice, like when it's in the teens or lower, sucks, especially (or "expecially", as Coach Jeremy would say) if your skates haven't been sharpened immediately before skating on it.
    Indoor ice always feels relatively soft to me, though I've only ever skated at two different indoor rinks (Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine, and Sawyer Arena in Bangor, Maine). The ice at both of those rinks feels the same to me, i.e., closer to soft than hard and unnaturally smooth and level due to being surfaced by a Zamboni.

    I just bought what I assume is a chinese knockoff stick from amazon. The brand name is Featol and I got the stick for 79 bucks Canadian, the stick only weighs 430 grams and comes with a 1 year no hassle replacement warranty. It has a P92 curve which I assume is a Bauer pattern. With the outrageous prices being charged for brand name sticks I can see this becoming a very popular stick segment moving forward, especially for recreational players like myself.

    • @Mike_Jones68
      @Mike_Jones68 Рік тому +1

      It will fit sure. China has no respect for IP, they steal and copy everything. Guess it's ok since you wld have to be brain dead to spend $300+ on a name brand stick that's made in China. Then again, look at all us using cell phones, apple, paying gobs of $$ for those. Ah well

  • @mattmartens3749
    @mattmartens3749 6 років тому +2

    I will never buy a hockey stick from a hockey store in North America ever again. You can buy direct from these hockey stick companies and pay a fraction of the price for the exact same sticks that you get on the Shelf. These companies will custom paint your sticks for you if you want them to and put your teams logo on them.

    • @unlucky_charm29

      the core is typically made of foam, and i would imagine the shaft is hollow due to the air being blown into it

    Jeremy- Is this a knockoff factory? I couldn't find any of the brands on here through a Google search. Curious as I know a lot of people that are buying knockoff sticks and I wonder if they are made the same way as the branded sticks.

    • @CoachJeremy
      @CoachJeremy  7 років тому +3

      I didn't get to visit a factory making big name sticks, but I think the big factories use machines for the wrapping process and the ones making knockoffs are done by hand.

    • @michaelzhang322
      @michaelzhang322 7 років тому +3

      Good question, big brand have exclusive factory to keep their patents, technology privately, like bauer have bonny. Others like ccm, warrior, they don't do this, their factory is open to work, but it's maybe not a best choice to do a business with them, as their production capacity is occupied by big brands. And your order size maybe not big as CCM, so cost will be also higher than them.

    Thanks for posting this video. No disrespect to the Chinese but I think it is important for younger people to see the absolute crap that they are making over there. I hope one of the younger guys watching this video says to himself I can make a better product in the United States or Canada. I am a old guy and I remember when the hockey equipment you bought would last you seasons instead of just one. I am afraid with the breakup of the big hockey companies that anyone can just purchase a license and make garbage with the big brand names on them. The problem is that even though the equipment is made cheaper than it was in Canada these guys are charging more for it. Hence killing the sport for many families who cannot afford it. I am sorry to say that Hockey has really become a rich kids game in the USA. I hope that Canada can keep up the tradition of making Hockey affordable and accessible to all of its younger citizens.

      Coleson Lamb in most of the world besides the US (Canada , Europe, Australia) people are taught to play with their dominant hand on top of the stick meaning righties play left, lefties play right. the theory being it gives the player better stick handling by sacrificing a little shot power. As with everything in hockey though it is entirely up to preference
