    Im interested in how you water the 3 sisters?

    • @SmallHouseFarm
      @SmallHouseFarm  Рік тому

      Often we only water when it rains.. occasionally we will set up drip irrigation, or in extra dry years, we've event used a sprinkler.

    Can you use summer squash. Straight or crookneck. Silver queen. Corn. And Kentucky wonder. Pole beans. ?

    • @SmallHouseFarm
      @SmallHouseFarm  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Jeff.. yes you can certainly use summer squash in the three sisters garden if you'd like, and Silver Queen corn should work just fine! Be careful with the Kentucky Wonder beans tho.. some pole beans are very aggressive and will grow too quickly and pull the corn down. I typically recommend using 1/2 runner types, they seem to perform the best in a cooperative growing situation like this

    what type of been was the first one? I am trying this the first time this year. I tired last year but only planted some squash with the corn. Will get brave and plant the beans also. I don't like getting scratched with the corn and thought it better not to plant the beans with it last year.

      The first bean we plant in this video is called Anakin Kavillii Giant, a very special seed that we are honored to steward! The story of this unique variety can be found in my first book From Our Seeds & Their Keepers.. here's a link if you'd like to check it out :) Happy Growing and best of luck with you three sisters garden! www.smallhousefarm.com/product-category/books/

      Aaric, the garden turned out well. The key to success is proper spacing.. which we discuss in the video. Its easy to crowd the plants together too closely which will have a negative impact on the harvest..

    It would have been nice to know the real name of those beans instead of naming them after your son.

    • @SmallHouseFarm
      @SmallHouseFarm  2 роки тому +2

      You're absolutely right! It was explained to us by the gentleman that was first gifted the seeds in Kavillii, Georgia that the woman sharing the seeds told him when he inquired that the beans had no formal name, they were simply the bean that she had grown in her village for most of her life. He subsequently named the bean to celebrate my son's birthday and to honor the village where he was given the seeds.. Through my seed preservation work I've observed that assigning formal names to varieties comes from a very Western mindset, most traditional cultures did not, and still do not, follow this practice and if they do name varieties, it is more of a descriptor, based on the seed or fruit's appearance, location and previous growers.. in a way, this is what Joseph did when he named this bean.. the Anakin Kavillii Giant is a very large seeded bean that came from the village of Kavillii. Sure this may not be the "real" name of the seed, but if we want to be technical, whatever the lady in Georgia called the bean was also not the "real" name.. since beans originated in the Americas and would have already had a name (likely descriptive) before it ever made it to Europe. My favorite part of the name/story though, is watching young Anakin growing his beans, saving his seeds and being so proud of doing it! He was gifted the seed when he turned one, this year he is eight.. still growing and enjoying his special bean! :)
