    Since you've seen the Hobbit movies, the tomb where Gimli cries contains 3 dwarves from Thorin's company. Balin, Ori, and Oin are all there. Balin in the tomb, and Ori is the one holding the book Gandalf takes.

    During Boromi's death scene, you can hear a choir in the soundtrack. The choir isn't singing random vowels, they're actually singing in Elvish. The english translation of the lyrics? It's a line from the books: "I do not love the sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only what they defend," For bonus hurt points- In the books, those lines were said by his little brother Faramir.

    These movies are really just one big long movie. The books were written as one book but the publishers didn't want to try and sell a 5" thick novel so they had him split it into three parts to make it 1) easier to hold, carry and read and 2) To make it easier to sell so people didn't have to splash out big money on a book they didn't know if they would like or not.

    The Ring was starting to do that to Bilbo after only sixty years. Smeagol, aka Gollum, had it for centuries. I remember reading the books for the first time, and realizing with so much horror that Gollum was in fact a Hobbit. That is what the Ring did to him. And Hobbits are resistant to the Ring!

    11:20: 'I'm not really sure how much time has passed.' Checking with the timeline in the books, the Fellowship started their boat trip on 16th February and camped near the waterfall on 25th February, so 9 days or thereabouts. To expand on that, Frodo met Gandalf in Rivendell on 24th October the previous year. Frodo and Sam left Hobbiton on 22nd September, so it took a bit more than a month to reach Rivendell.

    Some background from the books. The Balrog, the 5 Wizards (2 of whom are never named even in the books), and Sauron are all the same kind of being: Maia. They are basically demigods. In the First Age there was an army of Balrogs, all the Maia who followed the rebel god Morgoth. Man I would love to see a movie showing an army of balrogs!
    The 5 Wizards were Maia sent by the gods in the Third Age to help fight Sauron. So ROUGHLY each Wizard, Sauron, and Balrog are of similar magnitudes of power. They may vary in actual power, but all are super powerful and immortal in lifespan.

But I get the feeling she is maybe trying too hard to be entertaining, splitting her focus between the film and the camera that's on her, making it hard to get really immersed. For me, I don't necessarily need reactors to be "entertaining" per se, just that they are connected to, understanding, and having genuine reactions to the material.

    I think most of the Dwarves are dead at this point, so everyone probably just had expected Gimli to be over it already. He was obviously the last to know. Like, this guy is still balling about being one of the last of his race, jeez better comfort the guy carrying jewelry, lol. I love these movies, but that scene does play out pretty damn silly.

    • @tehdipstick
      @tehdipstick 2 роки тому +4

      The dwarves were still numerous at this point, certainly not to the point of rivaling humans, but there were still quite a large number of them around. The main reason for why Gimli was so upset was that he knew or was personally related to many of the dwarves on Balin's expedition, including Balin himself as he mentioned earlier in the movie. Tolkien's dwarves are surly, gruff and prideful, but they also have very tight-knitted communities with a lot of love and care for each other. This would have been a huge personal tragedy.
      Secondly, it's not so much that Gimli is the last to know as it is that no one really knew what had happened to Balin's expedition. There's a bit of a divergence between the movie canon and the book canon, but in the movie the dwarves of Erebor never suspected any ill tidings to have befallen the expedition. They just assumed that Balin and his crew had become so preoccupied mining mithril that they simply forgot to send word back to Dáin. This is why Gimli is so surprised and saddened. This is the first confirmation that Balin ultimately failed to reclaim the dwarves' ancestral home, and the first confirmation of his expedition party's grizzly end.

    • @sfodd1979
      @sfodd1979 2 роки тому

      @@tehdipstick I was mostly trying to be humorous, as I never really noticed how silly the scene was before. If the Dwarves, really are so numerous, though, where are they? I'm not saying you're wrong, You definitely seem to know your lore, it tracks with what I know. If the dwarves weren't as close to extinction, as I thought, why was Gimli the extent of their aid in the War of the Ring? Obviously they're around, but I always thought that, at this point there weren't many, and that's why you don't see more than one, in the story.

    • @tehdipstick
      @tehdipstick 2 роки тому +2

      @@sfodd1979 Tolkien didn't write too much about the dwarves, but from what is known about them there are seven dwarf kingdoms in all, though the only ones mentioned specifically at this point in time are the kingdoms of Erebor and the Blue Mountains.
      As for why you don't see many dwarves around, it's actually explained very well in the books and to a certain extent in the films. The dwarves, by their very nature, are isolationists. They prefer to keep to themselves and to not get involved in the business of men or elves unless they have to.
      The animosity between the dwarves and elves is actually a result of a tragic misunderstanding that took place during the days of the Last Alliance. The dwarves were originally asked to join in the fight against the forces of Sauron as well, but never responded. The elves concluded that this meant the dwarves had turned their back on the alliance, a reasonable conclusion to come to given the dwarves history of not getting involved, but they were mistaken. The reason the dwarves never responded to the request of joining the Last Alliance of Men and Elves was because they were already busy defending their keeps and halls from hordes of orcs.
      Basically, the dwarves and elves have such mistrust for each other since both races believe that the other chose not to aid them during the war in the closing years of the Second Age.
      This serves as proof of how little communication there is between the dwarves and the other races.

      @@tehdipstick Obviously I understood all that. Maybe I was mistaken, I thought Erabor and the Blue Mountains were in very close proximity to Mordor. I imagined those places were overrun, fairly early on, as Sauron's power grew and Mordor became a power, again, between the timing of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. So that was my understanding, Dwarves were around, but separated, leaderless, and few and far between. Once again, maybe I'm wrong.

    I stopped watching your LoTR series at 10:45 because you're all "lol, haha, this character" without real immersion. It's all just a joke to you.

    I'll just copy my comment from the last one: You are going to miss crucial scenes if you keep watching the theatrical (opinion of course). Here's my vote!

      I prefer the extended editions, every time, but some of the scenes are unnecessary and throw off the pacing. especially in the two towers. But some of the scenes do help newcomers understand things better as well.

      I'll have to watch the extended version off camera. It'll take a long time to edit and upload so I'll be using the theatrical versions for youtube.

      @@Californiablend you sure you didn’t watch the extended version of Fellowship? I thought I saw a scene or two from the extended version.
      I could be wrong. Even if you stick to the theatrical cuts of the Fellowship and Two Towers, you should watch the extended version of Return of the King as there are some important story elements that were inexplicably cut from the theatrical version. I won’t say more to avoid spoilers.

      @@Californiablend These are some of the greatest films of all-time! All three films were nominated for the academy for best picture 3 years in a row. That's never happened before and will never happen again. The fellowship of the ring was nominated for 13 Oscars and won 4 including best original score and best cinematography, the two towers was nominated for 6 Oscars and won 2 and the return of the king was nominated for 11 Oscars and won all 11 including best picture!

    It's definitely one of worst reactions i had to endure watching this treasure of Trilogy.
    Of course, everybody is on their rights and of their own for reacted as they want, and nobody can feel on exact same way as us, fans (in my case) scenes putted on screen, but here, no. Just no.
    Reactions completely weird, never on tone or context of scene..overreacted..not a pleasure to watch at all.
    No connexion or understanding of anything, not because of stupidity, she's very smart, just due to absolute lack of interest for the Lore drawned to her eyes.
    It's up to you to feel as you want but you just seems desinterested at all..
    Pretty disappointing when i saw others movies you did very well, with cleverness, great sense of details, down to earth discreet personnality.
    It's kind of opposite here. Don't know why. Maybe you should react to something you really want to do, not something for growing viewers on the channel if you seems to be totally hermetic and not invested at.
