Wax Moon (Richmond VA), 4K arcade walkthrough & tour, December 2024

Wax Moon is a unique curiosity in the Scott's Addition district of Richmond, Virginia. First off, they don't advertise themselves as an arcade. They're primarily known for being a cult vinyl and video store, with a heavy focus on horror movies and goth rock, industrial, and metal. Which is cool in its own regard! It was kind of surprising to see that many VHS tapes still on the shelves in this day and age. But, for those of us who are looking to get some gaming in, the true treat is in the back room. They have an arcade that is about 95% pinball, with only a couple of video game exceptions. And of those pins, the vast majority of them are horror themed as well. The curated collection is honestly outstanding. Old solid state machines like Gorgar, Devil's Dare, and The Phantom of the Opera stand next to modern era pins with DMDs and LCD screens like Freddy: A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Stranger Things, and of course the Mistress of the Dark herself makes an appearance with Elvira's House of Horrors. They also have a few other not-so-horror themed machines along the other wall, with fan favorites like Attack From Mars and Cactus Canyon. Entry is only $10 (or $15 on Saturdays) and all the machines are on free play, so if you're looking to spend a few hours here and flip away, it's a great deal!
As we were leaving, they mentioned that they had a sister store just around the corner, DawnStar Video Games, which had yet ANOTHER free play arcade... but that's a story for another time and another video, so stay tuned!
