Don't get me started! I moved away to another state and my mom HATES me for it!!! We still have a relationship, but almost 10 years later from moving, deep down I know she's still hurt and gives me a hard time about it. She kind of strains the relationship by acting like this, even tho I've told her MANY times I didn't' move away because of of them (my parents)! I had to live (start) my life, but she (still) can't accept that! This song hits home with me on SOOO many levels!
When I listen to this song, I picture a young adult finally taking charge of their own life and following their own path regardless of what everyone around them thinks. This person has always been sort of a rebel and now they're finally brave enough to put their foot down and live their life the way they want to live it and not how family or friends or society wants them to live it. Live Free. That is all. :)
my dad used to listen to shinedown all the time back in 2009. he would always play the sound of madness album. so much memories. god damn. 7 years flew by very fast.
It's amazing how this song has connected with so many people at such a young age. I remember listening to this song when I was like seven and I'm seventeen now. Truly amazing
My son died November 6, 2009. Today is his birthday, April 9, 1978. I miss him so much. He was 31 years old when he died. One night I was sitting outside with my husband and my daughter and I was looking at the full moon and I said to them, "look at the moon, doesn't that look like BJ's face in the moon. They both agreed but only some people can see it. So every full moon I get to see BJ's face in the moon. Anyway, I was driving one night soon after BJ's death and this song came on and it really hit home and now I play on BJ's Birthday every year. He was my best friend!
Demilon Stuart That's low, man. The woman's sharing a story about her son and you have to make a comment like that? I'm all for humor and poking fun at how some things look, but that was disrespectful.
damn. this was so long ago it makes me want to tear up. the nostalgia. brings back memories of my sister and I and my cousins having so much fun and spending every second together and now we hardly see eachother. everyone's off doing their own thing. ahhh how things change
DFL07 my family the same my brother went to the army I have not seen him in 1 year my cousin left for college I am 17 about to graduate 🎓 my brother is coming for the first time on Christmas love you brother thx my sister is a adult now she live far away from me so can't see her a lot . Tell your family's that you love them because you might never see them again be thankful for what you have because my brother might die in the army you never know I call him every week to talk about things hope you understand love you family ❤️
Almost the same the same for me. Actually... that's exactly the same (though I'm not 15 anymore). Hey past me. Have fun. And watch out for the crossroads-
I first heard this song on the radio when I was 14-16 I'm 19 now and when they took it out of the radio I couldn't hear this until now because my family and I were in a tough time economically so it's great being able to hear this again.
Hasn't been taken out of the radio yet man! It plays on the stations that The Fray and Lifehouse play on. Trust me, I found it last weekend while sitting in a restaurant. ;)
I relate to this song so much. I am currently 13, living with my mom, her boyfriend, my (half) brother, and (step) brother. I moved in about 2 years ago and all I've wanted is to leave and live with my dad. My mom wont let me even though it was agreed that if i wanted to leave i could. My brothers over the past 2 years have lowered my self esteem and overall attitude tremendously. Me and my mom get into arguments after something happens. They treat me so unfairly. My brothers smoke pot, cigarettes, and party all the time and they get away with it. I mess up ONCE like for instance, "Your grounded from all electronics for a month because you did dishes wrong." I just want to leave. And i feel that this song was made for me (which is weird, because it was made in 2008). But whatever. I am just praying to God that i can leave and find happiness with my Dad.
I am 14 and my parents are separated as well. I wish the best for you man, stay strong. Talk to your dad about living with him if you really dislike living with your mother that much. Godspeed.
Im 13 I live with my dad , I was given the choice to live with my mom or my dad and up until a year and a half ago I finally got to leave my mom,. I felt so trapped. She beat me and called me stupid, she pulled a gun on me and Im living with my dad now I finally feel happy
My bad still its true u get time to but at first u never realize to use it while u have it i know i would do what u said in a heart beat 😢 but i lost my chance a long time ago
They played this during the highlight video of my basic combat training cycle during our graduation ceremony. The part "sometimes goodbyes are a second chance" really meant something to us. We all said goodbye to brothers, sisters, moms, dads, wives, husbands, friends, etc. to go through that. It was worth it to walk across that stage in my dress blues and hear this song knowing we all made it through.
My parents got divorced when this song was popular and my mom would listen to this song and think maybe getting divorced was the second chance she was looking for
This song brings back so many memories I'm 14 I was 7 when this song came out and my friend showed me this song he was 10 now he's 17 I want to tear up cause just lising to it makes me remember when we used to play ps2 good times good times
My friend Alex sang this song at his dad's funeral. His dad committed suicide because when he wasn't at work, he was at the bar. When he wasn't at the bar, he was at work. It was devastating when he told me about his dad. He broke down in tears and i told him everything was going to be ok and that i was always going to be there for him no matter what. Alex is my best friend and I just can't imagine losing someone important in your life. Especially if its your dad. R.I.P! You will be missed! 😔
He singing about how his parents have very high standards and want him to live his life the way the want him to. He's had enough and leaves to live the life he wants to. He's tried his best and just can't do it anymore.
Hardcore Newb Fan Just how I interpreted it. People see it differently. Different is the one thing about us that's the same. It's all about perspective.
Not necessarily, I mean one of my coworkers is working toward being a chef, both of his parents are in business and marketing and told him to "get a business degree and get a REAL job" even though being a chef is a respected job, especially if you end up working in a 4 or 5 star restaurant. For a lot of people like that professions that are artistic in any way (which includes being a musician) it isn't good enough no matter how famous you are. There are some parents out there with some insanely high standards and even if you end up famous, you aren't doing what /they/ wanted you to do, so it might as well be nothing to them. Not saying this is the case or anything but your logic is a little flawed because not everyone thinks that being a musician is a "real career", mostly because it's such a crapshoot whether you'll actually end up famous or not.
"sometimes goodbye is a second change" that really speaks to me Because I have been left behind by people I really cared for but then I found new people to cared about me
One of the last few Hard Rock bands with a post grunge twist mixed with the kind of incredible storytelling in every song they write that you just don't see anymore. Shinedown is in a class of their own in this day and age
I'm not understanding why so many people equate this with death? Seems more like someone who's cutting off contact with their parents due to not being supported in their life decisions. And hoping that time away will bring them back together, after time they've had time to heal.
+Dahnoie I'm pretty sure the official video for it shows a girl leaving home for the first time? I think there's some sort of dance school she wants to go to or something that her parents don't understand. Idk, it's been a while since I saw it, but as a result I've always had a similar interpretation

best song ever from shinedown!
Agreed 😭👍
deadshot-headshot I'd have to disagree and say simple man is.
everyone has their own taste in music. i just find simple man too slow to listen to i rather listen to sound of madness or second chance
tbh 45 is my personal favorite ^-^
i agree with this being one off their better songs plus simple man was a cover .... but they are fucking awesome live
listening to this after years make me realize just how fast life goes by
This song always reminds me of being in the Army. The goodbyes are constant, and I hope the military families realize why we do it. God Bless

Thank you for protecting the freedom of everyone in America, try the best you can, and that will be more than enough for everyone!
7 years later I learn this song is about running away from home. It has melancholy undertones to it, which I can understand.
Toon Link , and I just learned that from you.. Well
i can't get over how this song puts together all my favorite styles of music, and am made to believe this is my favorite song.
I'm only 12 and when I was a little 6 year old this was my jam 😂💯💯
Cool bro, no one cares.
+Beophobic You realize what a comment section is for, right?
This was one of my favorite songs in middle school and it's just as good now
Just because there's a comment section, that doesn't mean people have to care
why do people named Austin and with the same profile pic on youtube hate stories of people ?
I never heard of SHINE DOWN. I truly could kick myself for missing these awesome songs wow awesome
I do not hear: "Haley's Comet, She waved" I keep hearing "Haley's Comet shooting"

no really
Hardcore Newb Fan Just how I interpreted it. People see it differently. Different is the one thing about us that's the same. It's all about perspective.
but he's a famous singer so his parents high expectations would of been met by now

Dahnoie suicide. But normal death makes zero sense.

This is an absolutely great deep song. One of the best rock song in past 20 years in my opinion. I do in fact listen to all kinds of music.
80% of the comments: special little snowflakes who don't like the music from their generation and think they're unique because they like older music.

Thank you for being brave and protecting me and my family
i remember listing to this for the first time when i was little. it reminds me of when times were somewhat good in my life.
This was the song I listened to over and over when my daughter left for Army basic training. I cried all 11 weeks she was gone
I feel this song so much, you have no idea. Strikes a little close to home.
My brother introduced me into this kind of music and I'm so thankful to him!!
I found this song from hearing the last like 10 words and went home and looked them up. I'm so glad I did. THIS SONG IS AWESOME!
Didn't know this song was sung by them. Haven't heard this song in forever. Just found this band and I'm so glad I did :)
