Gosh darn it Mildred, I was going out to the mailbox and there's that guy in his driveway woodworking again!

Your timing was great, Mike! Just made my first ZCI from poplar, sadly I had to work it a bit with a hand plane after I made it since the wood was a tiny bit too thick on one edge, and I couldn't get a flush fit on both sides of the ZCI. Anyway thanks for the video. I think my next batch will be made from Tempered hardboard or MDF.

I had no idea they still made Shopsmiths! My dad had a Mark I (ca. 1947) with every single accessory. With very little help I taught myself how to use it. Although I now have a complete shop with separate machines I think a Shopsmith would be an excellent choice for those with limited space. Looks like they really did a good job engineering with the Mark VII. Thanks for the top notch video!

Bought my mark 5 in 1985. Built a garage and still going strong after all these years. I simply love mine wouldn,t trade for anything. Might not look new but she still is as accurate as every. Thanks shoesmith for a quality tool.

Mike, you got over 12,000 people to watch you talk about a shopsmith 😀. Go back in time ten years and see what that Mike has to say about that. Must be mind blowing.

Well I buy my lumber rough cut from a hardwood dealer and popular runs about
1.90 to 2.60 a board foot. Thats about 1.2 bf 3 bucks worth of lumber so no lowes isn't a good deal.
But you have to be able to mill it down to your finnish size, you could use lexan or some type of plastic. Or just plywood.

Nice video! You turned me into a Shopsmith junkie, selling me that PowerPro.

Very Good Video, Mike. I definitely will be putting this on my to do list. As a relatively new Mark 7 owner, I like the way you incorporated the table saw, drill press, disk sander and (almost) the band saw. This is why I bought my Mark and it was inspiring to see outside of a sales demo. Thank you. Looking forward to your next video.

    Thanks, Mike!
I used this to make three blanks. One for now and two for when needed. I needed a ZCI (and Scott’s “Jack The Stripper” for my next project.
Now I will be able to cut 1/8” strips of walnut and maple for my overly complicated and fancy crosscut sled.

Nice common sense approach to making the inserts. I first used them for a dado blade. I had some cheap flooring planks which work wonderfully and are the right thickness. I bought my upgrade to the power pro from you in Amarillo Texas. You did a demo in your favorite store and made four french cut table legs in about 5 minutes.

Make yours. You might have a different perspective as to materials and techniques. You could cover how to get the saw blade aligned with the slot the next time the ZCI gets used.

Excellent video! I especially liked the way you allowed for the use of the upper guard. I had never thought of that. When I make ZCIs, I use either 1/2 or 1/4 inch plywood scrap, depending on how sturdy I want it, then add a plexiglass (again scrap) riving knife glued to an extended kerf cut. Most people just make a ZCI without allowing for a riving knife (I know I used to until I had a board kick back), which isn’t very safe.

I've always made own table inserts as the original SS ones are too expensive for me.

Thanks Mike. Helpful video. I have been making these since you showed us at your class in Dallas a few years back. I use the 3.5 inch boards though, and somehow I missed thee part about the saw-guard slot. I will modify my current ones and use your tip for all future copies.

I have a bunch of first gen Formica laminate flooring left over from a job 25 years ago. Been using it for ZCIs for years.

I liked all of these except the drum sander insert - it looks weak on the outer sides where the wood is thinnest and could break easily (btw it didn't look centered but we get the hole idea).

Excellent instruction Michael, The only thing I was left to guess about, was the diameter of the router bit. Its very difficult to get a true read on size from a video, but my guess is 1/4". Also, about how long did you make the upper sawguard cut? Anyway, this video was the answer to something I've been seeking, which was a way to make my own insert blanks. You've made it simple and doable, right down to taking us shopping with you. I've already gone to Lowes, purchased the 1/4" x 4" x 48" poplar and made three blanks. Many thanks. p.s. My original headstock works just fine, but "Now" I am seriouly jonesing for a PowerPro headstock! 🤣
I'm pretty handy should I consider the rebuild kit or a new headstock? I'm retired and I hate to spend more than I have to. Then again I don;t want to be penny wise and pound foolish.

Can someone please advise me? My husband bought a used Shopsmith at a pawn shop in Wa. He only recently got a chance to use it and decided that it needed new bearings so he took the machine apart to get the bearings pressed. Before he got to put it all together he caught covid from me, and because he had copd, emphysema and pulmonary hyper-tension, all severe, he did not survive it.
I need to sell this tool. I believe that he paid too much for it, but I have no idea what to ask. I dont even know how to put it back together again.

It looks like the hole in the insert for the drum sander is off center. Reasoning, or just a slip?
