    "Je veux une eau" is an odd and unclear collocation in French. We use the phrase "un verre d'eau" (a glass of water) or "Une eau minerale" (a bottle of mineral water or spring water.) "Une eau" would be used for water in general as in a body of water, "une eau de qualité"... I hope this helps.

    Would someone who speaks french still be able to understand what your trying to say if you mess up on masculine and feminine words?

    • @raphaelvarlet868
      @raphaelvarlet868 9 років тому +31

      Of course, they are able to understand even if you make a mistake on masculine and feminine. It sound a bit funny when you are wrong, but that's not a problem, everybody understands what you're saying (and nobody will think you're stupid because all foreigners make mistakes (italians and spanish just a little, english speakers a lot)). Keep in mind that most of the words ending with E are feminine (easy when you know the sex : ex : un petit boulanger = a small male baker, unE petitE boulangèrE = a small female baker (notice that with the feminine form you dont't heard the E but you pronounce distinctly the last letter of the masculine form (n, t, r), wich isn't heard in the first case because not followed by E); and here are some feminine things : une assiette = a plate, une voiture = a car ; some masculine : un avion = a plane, un mot = a word). However there are many exceptions : un homme = a man, un arbre = a tree, un hotel confortable = a comfortable hotel, because adjectives ending with -able don't change with gender, and of course : le and ce. Almost all words ending in -tion are feminine : une addition, une opération, la condensation, etc. I hope this little improvised lesson was usefull !

    I have a question. When can I use Tu instead of vous. I know both mean you, but I don't know when to use them. I remember learning Vous is either what you say to a teacher or a more respectful way of saying you then Tu. But I'm not completely sure. And I don't know when to use it.

    • @NoName-ft2jb
      @NoName-ft2jb 9 років тому +8

      No, you only use TU when you're speaking to 1 person (someone you know like your friend etc...) , and you can use VOUS when you're speaking to several persons (plural). You can also use VOUS when you're speaking to a person who you don't know, like somebody in the street, your teacher or your boss.
      Sorry for my english x)

      Bonjour, you don't get to know how a noun is masculine. or feminine. Words in French, like in Spanish, Italian, Porutguese , German .. have a "gender". There are some lists, a few rules but you will have to learn each word. Restaurant is "masculin", banque is "féminin" and so on ... difficult ? yes ! But c'est la vie !

      Dans le contexte où l'apprenant n'a jamais parlé un seul mot de français, et où l'objectif est de s'en sortir dans un pays francophone avec le minimum de fluidité, ça fait beaucoup plus de sens d'enseigner à dire "je veux" que "je voudrais" (on se lance dans les conjugaisons et les temps de verbes), ou "Est-ce que je pourrais avoir...". Franchement, si un tourite arrive dans ton restaurant et te dit "Je veux..." tu vas quand même comprendre ce qu'il veut dire. À moins que tu veuilles faire chier et être snob, et faire semblant que tu ne comprends pas, mais ça c'est pour les gens qui sont de la merde.

    I really hate to do this but i must react to two things. Americans say "I want that" where as an english speaker in other parts of the world would use politness and say "I would like" and it is this form of politness that has to be used in France. Its not "Je veux " it's "Je voudrais" and nothing else. Je veux would not get you what you want.. The use of "I want/je veux" causes us to believe that a spoilt child is demanding something.
    The second thing is this "Ça s'il vous plaît" a direct and impolite translation from english. What you should do is use the different forms of celui followed by s'il vous plaît and nothing else.

    • @purpledrinnk
      @purpledrinnk 10 років тому +2

      I like how you clump all Americans together and assume they are all impolite and arrogant. You look at Americans as being the self-centered English speakers, "I want," and all other English speakers in the world as being polite, "I would like." I'm an American, and given the context I wouldn't, nor do I really know anyone else who would, say "I want!" when in a polite situation. Believe it or not, not all Americans are fat, stupid, ignorant, arrogant, narcissistic, etc.

    • @timmannen
      @timmannen 10 років тому

      Then I would advise you to come to Europé and work in a restaurant or shop here. When the americans come in you will understand what I mean.

      I stayed in France for 2 months and never said "I want" I would say I would like or may I...That's just My Good American upbringing...All places have their rudeness. If I decided to go to France with the impression that all French were "snobs" I would have been treated as such myself. Instead, I went with an open mind to come to my own conclusion. I found most to be very open and polite to me (but one bus driver), but then again I was nice and polite to the people I came in contact with. Bottom line? Don't clump a group of people together in the same group no matter what the Nationality, Culture or Background.

    merci de cette video, c'est tres enrichissante, mais on ne dit pas vraiment "je veux une eau" on utilise plutot l'article partitif, "je veux de l'eau", since water is uncountable, we use the partitive article or just measure the water by its container, un verre d'eau, une bouteille d'eau or just "de l'eau" like you say "du riz" (some rice or rice), it just means water or some water
