"Allow your meditation to be deep. Give yourself to it. Do not enter meditation with demands and requests. Enter meditation to give yourself to it. It is the temple of the True Spirit within you to which you bring yourself. In your practice periods, then, be present and be still. Allow yourself to bathe in the luxury of emptiness. For the presence of God is first experienced as emptiness because it lacks movement, and then within this emptiness, you begin to feel the presence that permeates all things and gives all meaning in life. Practice stillness today so that you may know." Steps to Knowledge, The Book of Inner Knowing - Step 69: Today I will practice stillness.
After all the anxiety I experienced going through open heart surgery I'm finally able to get back to meditation and my, abnormal for me, anxiety is melting away. Thank you for being my constant reminder to go back to just 'being'.
I hope even if it’s just 1 single person that sees this, that they have an amazing day and an even better future! ~ Much love from a Law Of Attraction UA-camr💜
When I sit and try to clear my mind, I never really am able and feel a failure at meditation of sorts. Sitting watching nature, listening to birds in the trees or embroidering carefully, the time disappears and I feel rested. I keep trying. This helps. ❤️

Cute, sensible and solidly grounded John Butler, so calm and comfortable to listen to - itself a meditation. Thank you for sharing this! (I could not help to notice the similarities between what he says about for instance the present moment, the reluctance to use the expression 'concentration' with meditation, the analogy of the clouds, the letting go - with those of the Stoics, the Taoists, Tolle and Alan Watts. I'm not sure, he is acquainted with any of these, but it just confirms the universality, does it not?) PS. When I have noticed that, I thought no more and completely drifted off with John's words. I will definitely return to these again in the evening. Thank you again.
I tried transcendental meditation for 5 months but I didn't seem to get anything from it. I'm going to try mindfulness soon. I want to find peace in this chaotic world. I am too sensitive and my mind reactive, so easily triggered. Nature is my church but I dont get to be in it nearly enough.
I started meditating about 50 years ago, and started vipassana mindfulness meditation about 15 years ago, though I don't claim to have been as devoted as John. However, John says a few things that I believe are worth questioning, the most significant of which is that there is no death - I'd be very interested to hear what he means by "death" and how he came to this conclusion, thanks.
Keep at it with the impromptu videos. John's lost in God and therefore more revealing. This talk was excellent. Phil is this filmed after his meditation session?
Hi Joan - it is filmed at a silent meditation retreat in a local Bakewell cottage after breakfast (which is after a one and a half hour meditation in church). Phil
Hey john just checking in with the concious community.hope everybody is at peace all is well. Question is popping into the studio for a recording or maybe even just a jam on the guitar or drums meditation i think so but just looking for opinions also i work in food service maintenence and sanitation all my best moments and ideas have come from presence within my work constant movement physically i agree brings one into. The moment .
John Butler has a lot of followers. A lot of admirers. People enjoy his videos for one or both of two reasons: his calm, soothing voice for ASMR and/or his discussions on meditation. Simply listening to him is meditation. I think most of the people who listen only for the ASMR don’t find much wisdom in his words, and also don’t comment much on the videos. Most that do comment find him to be full of wisdom and enjoy his messages on meditation. Personally, I enjoy his videos for the ASMR only, and don’t find much wisdom in his messages. But his voice…he is an ASMR god. Why I don’t find him full of wisdom is because I disagree with his views and perspectives on a variety of things. I'm not saying I'm right and he's wrong. I'm saying I disagree with him. It could be I'm wrong. But I disagree with him. His whole concept of “I AM” is completely contrary to what is taught in scripture. We are not “I AM” Being named and having a separate identity only makes sense. We are all individuals. I would imagine even the angels would have separate identities. If I see three people and want to talk to one, I have to be able to identify individuals. Identifying different species of plants and animals for their different uses etc. I mean I find it silly to think that “separate identity” is for a lower level of consciousness. “If you have nothing to say, say nothing” is a meditation thing, but not necessarily a spiritual thing. It doesn’t lessen a person’s spirituality if they want to talk about the weather or their work day or tell a joke. John is an introvert who has been meditating for 60 years. By his own acknowledgement, he prefers nature over people, and his character is to have less conversation. But that is his character, his personality. Nothing wrong with it, but there’s also nothing wrong with engaging in conversation. It doesn’t make one less spiritual. Just saying… He talks about the differences between the Western and Eastern branches of Christianity, and often says “in the east man is considered a sinner”…but I’ve never heard of any denomination that doesn’t view man as a sinner. They may approach it differently, but they all view man as a sinner. There are several other things I could list, but you get the idea. His meditation followers don’t challenge him. They put him on a pedestal. But I do enjoy his videos. He is such a calm and gentle man, with a very soothing voice. I listen to him daily.
20.10 'It's singular, and WE can smile at the performance'. Don't get this for if it's singular how can there be a WE to smile at the performance. You know I do think their are other(maybe egoless) states of conceousness but their relationship to the human condition is one that teachers and pupils alike must grapple with.Memories, dreams and reflections being part of who we are NOW.At least on the individual level😊

Here is where I need help. I have major problems living with noise and in this very video I see John assess the noises that are going on and he seems to not be rattled by them as he's talking but folds it into the meditation experience that puts him in some kind of quiet and everlasting stillness, like being above the clouds. I would appreciate anybody trying to put into words how I can somehow experience the noises in my environment and be in a place of quiet in stillness... where I can be at peace and can even still sleep when I need rest in the presence of annoying noises. I get so angry and have such a need to change my environment. Noises have been that upsetting probably having something to do with having obsessive compulsive disorder and perhaps other factors. I appreciate some of the comments that have been made already here but I still don't get it. Help me understand. Again how can I be in quiet and stillness in the presence of annoying noises? Storm's comment was very interesting. Perhaps you have some more wisdom to share.
Hi Morgan - I know a little of how you feel. When I was in India at Ramana's place I found the barking dogs in the evening REALLY annoying. Then I told myself "they're only telling each other jokes and laughing". Sometimes re-framing what simply is can be helpful. Phil
