Making a Corner Cabinet Out of a Whiskey Barrel

  • I’m challenged to make a corner cabinet out of a whiskey barrel. First I lay the barrel in a hammock and secure the metal bands to the barrel. Those bands hold it together so it’s important they stay put. Once they’re attached I cut the barrel in half(or as close to half I as could). After I got it cut in half I decide I should get the top glued up and in clamps. I first de-nail all the pieces. After I give them all a straight edge run through the saw. I use a dowel jig to help align them during the glue up stage. Once the tops in clamps I jump back to the cabinet. I cut some plywood out and figure out the best way to match the curves of the barrel. I used a piece of the barrel to get a rough idea of the curve and adjusted it as needed. Using a pocket hole jig I joined the two together and joined those to the barrel. It was time to cut the door out. I cut along the metal band with a jigsaw . This is where making sure the bands are secure to the barrel. Once I was inside it was time to make the bottom and middle shelf. I used 1/8” strips to make a template to get the shelf shape. Note, the bottom shelf needs a curve cut to fit. I put a oak strip on the middle shelf to hide the plywood edge. Attaching the hinges was a trick for me. In the end I figured using a level and some weights I was able to mount them and the door easily. Jumping back over and cutting the top out. I made a template where it will actually be to sit tight against the wall. I could’ve made it 90 degrees but wanted it to be more custom. I stained the inside shelves black to match the inside more and stained the outside and top to the customers preference. The top needed more support so I made a curved piece from plywood and used pocket holes to attach it. I looked for a handle to go with it but decided to make one from a bolt. I cut the head off then welded some thread to it. I needed the door to stay in place so I tied using a magnet latch. The metal it came with wasn’t strong enough so I cut some out myself . Worked like a charm. The whole thing came together in the end and I’m happy with the build. Thanks for watching.

Another fantastic job my friend. Think yours is the first I've seen making a corner cabinet? I have a project with a barrel I'm trying to figure out. Wondering if you'd be willing to chat or help with some feedback for me? Hope so. Let me know Jim, TX

Thanks. I realized after I made it most won’t actually make it a corner cab . Find me on Instagram if you still got questions. Thanks for watching

When putting on the back pieces that connect to the barrel from the side how did you get the curve to line up so perfectly? Also when you used your jig saw did you cut it at an angle? Thanks I'm currently making one for a friend just like this and I'm stumped right now.

I laid the barrel on top of the plywood and traced the profile. I used a jigsaw to cut it out and I did slightly add a bevel. I used a black caulk as well to hide any gaps .

Just tension. I put a few screws in the bottom to keep it in place .
