Great review! I just ordered a full set for my new FR1s. I'm not too concerned with going fast and I intend to rocker them and only use them to practice slalom at night, only need to skate to and from the park. So happy you tested the normal spacer in them, as I love their "soft" color regardless if they light up or not!
I've just thought that it would be nice to realize the braking system for skates based on the magnetic spacers. I have a pair of cheap luminous wheels from oxelo and they are tend to stop after two-three spins also. But they are not that shiny as seba ones. But they were surprisingly durable on the road i must say. I suppose that If use only one shining with three normal then the loss of he speed won't be very crucial. thanks for review! it was profound and entertaining.
Nik, yes I was thinking the same thing. To just have one glowing wheel. All four look so cool...but if you are used to a slick bearing rolling around town or...these will be quite restricting. A super gift idea for a beginner...or maybe to practice speed control while skating downhill.
If I remember correctly, these work similar to how an alternator works in a car, creating alternating current. LEDs allow current in one direction only, so staggering them to allow positive and negative flow allows almost continuous light to be emitted as the magnets pass each opposing phase.
I wanted to buy them for their colour alone without the led :D Couldn't find those beautiful colours in regular wheels. So cool that you experimented with that, now I know what I need to do to enjoy them without the light!
I am currently looking for 80mm wheels for my new HC Evo Pro and was considering these wheels but was hesitant since I don't want light-up wheels constantly. I am so glad I found this video answering the exact question I had in my head. Good to know that you can just replace the magnetic spacer with a normal one and it gives back the speed and low profile. Could you tell me about the long-term ramifications of this tho? I intend to use the 4x80 in skate parks or doing tricks mostly and occasionally skate in the night with the pretty lights. Would love to know how they hold up with swapping spacers and using ones that aren't actually meant for the wheels.
Hey Gregory! You seem dissapointed by those wheels, but don't give up on them yet. I've spent all summer skating on similar wheels (Flying Eagle Lazer) and i've got a few tips that might help you. The main problem - "plastic" spacers. They don't want to play nice with bearings. Straight from the package some of my wheels spinned "freely", but some seemed to be "stuck". And it took me an evening of swapping and flipping of bearings around to get all 8 wheels to freely spin, and they even wobble when I gently shake the skate. (Around 5-6sec of freespin seems to be enough for those wheels.) Another problem that I personally ran into - relying on rockered skates. Probably because of my ice skating background, I have a habbit of pushing at a 45 degree angle (instead of a side push). Any time I get new set of wheels - I absolutely can't get any speed untill they develop "natural rocker" and allow me to "twist" my foot for a push. Seeing that you prefer front rocker, you might have a similar issue. If you want to test it out - go for a 3-5 skate sessions on the asphalt, "grind" your wheels to a natural rocker and see if it improves your speed. As far as speed goes - when "lightup" wheels don't misbehave, they seem to run almost as fast as normal wheels. Almost. :)
I'm sorry, but this just isn't the case with these particular wheels with regard to speed. It was absolutely like night and day. These simply are not meant for speed. My wheels were set up with a front rocker, as it is the set up upon which I always roll(not sure if you watched the entire video ;) ). There is simply no comparison. It's not that the plastic spacer doesn't play nicely with the bearings. It is the fact that the magnet is attracted to the specially made hub of the actual wheel. Traditional spacers help a wheel spin freely, but the magnetic spacers provide a magnetic pull. It's just the mere science of it. After I replaced these luminous wheels with some Under Cover brand wheels....wow...the speed difference was out of this world! Additionally, this was with precisely the same set up, with regard to size, as I had with the luminous wheels. It is possible that the wheels which you have used may be somewhat different from the ones I showcased in this video. In closing, they are really cool wheels, which is why I gave them a 10 out of 10 for their intended purpose...decent wheels for fun and showing off. I was actually happy to know that I'm not the only one using front rocker when I found your "Why I use front rocker" video a few month ago. Which gave me this idea that you might have "the more maneuverable the skate is, the better the push" issue that I do. But if you get a lot of speed with fresh set of UC wheels - then it seems I was wrong. And yes, the wheel itself is essentially an electric motor in reverse, with magnetic field being the key ingredient. But in case of the wheels that I have - as soon as I got rid of mechanical seizing of the wheels because of odd dimensions of spacers (which is probably due to mellowness of the plastic in comparison to the aluminium) the amount of resistance provided by magnetic pull was negligible. But... Maybe Seba wheels have stronger magnets... Weird...
if you use these wheels just for safety or visibility, then you could just put in one led wheel per skate, that would reduce the friction to just 25% compared to all wheels with leds.
Is the red actually red or is it using a white LED and looks pink? The old Luminous wheels used white LEDs. As for the question of speed, these are for showing off and for fun. They aren't made for functionality and speed
For urban skating, the smaller front wheel adds some mobility for quick turns and aids in "hovering" over rough terrain, while at the same time you retain some of your stability by keeping the rear wheel the same size as the middle two.
thank you I did end up finding and watching your other video about it I skate really heavy on sidewalks and rough roads as well as bricks asphalt and old parking lots so I have really beat down my front wheels, and I might try this when I get a new set of wheels, thanks!
I only used my light up wheels once & they sucked so bad! Especially against the wind & they had no grip at all! Plus, I think skating at night is more dangerous for many reasons. I can skate every day & prefer mornings. I agree with you, slow as Canadian molasses! SLAYER 🤘😎👍♥️
@@22ryanoc yeah, definitely if your not consuming a lot of protein. I have smoothies everyday I work out or skate & I notice a huge difference in ability to keep & build muscles.
Example of bad engineering, the wheels can be made to use very small coil instead of a huge magnet. Anyway, thanks, I think I would stick to the regular wheels or may be just glow in the dark wheels.
jsut like how bearings cant be properly tested without load these things cannot be properly tested without load. a better test of drag would be a free roll test while worn. there is a common misconception with bearings in that the bearing capabilities can be tested by just spinning it even though that is a very bad indicator of proper lubrication.
