- The epic duel between Neil Hannon and Duke Special comes to a climax on RTE's "The View". Watch as they fight with swords, fists, and pianos! In this piece their weapons of choice are "No Cover Up" and "Mastermind"
There have been a couple of requests, so copies of the songs from this show can be found here: www.mediafire.c...
Both are stunning. Neil doing No Cover Up is amazing, but the Duke's rendition of Mastermind is equally haunting.
I love them both, No Cover Up is one of my fave Duke songs, the lyrics are exquisite and Neil does a great job as does Duke on Mastermind. Two fabulously talented men. Neil is like the Prof Henry Higgins to Duke's Eliza Dolittle!!!
Finding this video today (along with the one of Neil singing Dear Lord and Father) has genuinely made my summer. What voices, what talent, what emotion. Wonderful.
Is there anything on earth as beautiful as Neil Hannon's voice?
Tom Waits, Maybe -;) i'm Jocking... i Do Appreciate Them Together... Take Care, Dear Eve Williams And Have A Lovely Week-End...
Both are very good singers... Love theire music..... Greetings from the Netherlands.
I liked both covers better than the originals. Neil Hannon and duke special are amazing!!
I agree completely, I love Duke's music and all, and he's a great performer but Neil's songwriting craft is much better and his cover here has the same sort of desperate, wallowing ache, slowly rising into cathartic climax, that's present in his original version of Mastermind, and, for me, really makes the song.
Superb cover - My 2 favourite artists of all time!
I wasent familar with Duke Special before this vid, but that song is wonderful, and it sounds beautiful coming out of Neil hannons mouth. I could listen to it forever. Same goes for the version of Tonight We Fly he did on this show
I actually think I prefer both covers to the originals.
I can't believe I missed this! Amazing! Thanks for uploading! ^_^
Love both of them, but Neil's rendition of Duke's song is definitely the best of the two covers. He just knows how to convey the emotion in his voice better- something that comes from 20 years' experience, Duke's just not quite there yet. I also love the one note he changes in the bridge to make the second piano phrase into a diminished chord as opposed to Duke's original normal chord. Simple, but ingenious. Much more effective.
Gah! Neil writes such gorgeous lyrics
Duke's cover of 'Mastermind' was the highlight.
Wow, wat een schitterende versie van Mastermind, Grote klasse mr Duke!
Duke Special always, more warmth and presence in his performance. Amazing guy
The very beginning seems a bit high for Neil but he pulls it off
oh duke you break my heart
You're so very welcome :)
Very nice covers, Neil's slightly edges it for me though.
I Think that Neil Hannon is a better lyricist but I think that the Duke has a greater range as a singer (but this is all I have heard Neil sing in)...

Sames he's a home town boy what can you do plus his accent is one of the only belfast accents I can stand including my own
Neil definitely wins. No doubt.
Duke has way more emotion in his voice, Just my opinion.
Any chance the files are available else where as that link is a dud??
