The falsetto voice sections instantly date the song to the 50s/early 60s falsetto songs. But the only way you'd know it is if you've listened to 50s/60s songs like that. It's a very simple tune, with one verse repeated after the unique monophonic synthesizer solo - it's simple, and very very catchy. You really only need to hear it one time to like the song. It's a combination of not having to think too hard about what's being conveyed, the great vocals, the rhythm section, and the unique synthesizer. The song was in the film 'American Graffiti' which was a major hit film. I wish Del could have been a sort of 'Tom Petty' type of performer, turning out lots of hits, and had a more solid, decades-long career. Del was very talented - great songwriter, great performer. This tune will be remade by lots of bands for decades - it has appeal that is beyond the time period it first came out. Great songs are usually timeless. . .

Not long after Del Shannon died my father told me the story of when this song had come out in the late winter of 1961. He heard it for the first time in a diner in Ann Arbor Michigan just after his girlfriend at the time had broken up with him. As he walked back to his dorm at the University of Michigan which was a mile or so away from the diner, it was pouring rain on him and he was reminded of the song. Before he knew it a car drove by and happened to go through a HUGE puddle and it splashed him like a tidal wave. Quite the kicker on a tough night but he chuckled when he told me 'at least that made me forget about the breakup for a while' as all he could think about after that was getting to shelter to get dried and warmed. That summer, he would meet my mother and they married in 1965. They were together all of those years until my dad passed last year due to a heart attack (his second, the first being in 2003). He was just short of his 81st birthday. My mom's doing okay for the most part all things considered, but it's always tough. Especially when you've been with someone for 62 years and married for 58 of them. Rest in peace Dad, rest in peace Del.

COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND those memories you don’t have anymore.....but stay in your heart.....keep them in your heart
I'm not old enough to have any memories except American Graffiti being a brilliant film.

A very very sad, strange, weird and bizarre end to Del’s life. Committed suicide on 2/8/1990 at age 55. He was suffering from depression. He so desperately wanted to get away from that one hit wonder song Runaway. Sadly he never could. May he RIP.
Wtf
@@suzymoon2067 that’s the way it is in the music business. When u reach the top where do u go from there? Back down. I’ve seen that happen to a lot of artists. 4 example look at Twisted Sister. Here today gone tomorrow.

Kurt Caldwell brought me here.
Being only 26 years old and cruising my 1964 impala around downtown modesto, people look at me funny but i love it!
You seem like my kinda person
Ha...you should have seen my oldest son crusin' around in his 1959 Caddie!! Now THAT drew some looks!!! (This was in the late '80's...he sold it to a guy in England...dang....)

I was in Manchester, England visiting family in 1961 when this song came out. I loved it then, I was 11, I still love it and I'm 70!
I'm 60 now, but remember this masterpiece. Brings me trough childhod..👍🏴
@@zoki-kj3oxI’m 11 and discovered this song and many other through my grandparents. It is very addictive.
Such a timeless classic. The song is also in one of lucas' greatest nostalgic classic film, American Graffiti, featuring an outstanding cast and soundtrack.
He also sang it for the opening them for 'Crime Story.'

@@WakandaBabe Thanks for pointing it out. I've heard of the show but have never watched it . Looks like a cool series.
Imagine that this song has been sold 80,000 times a day at its height. That's incredible!
Thanks Del for this gem.
Great song, rest in peace Del.
I listen to songs like this because they are great and better than anything today.

SDC, About what
Dexter brought me here.
Who’s here after watching Dexter new blood 🩸
I was alive in '65....... A great time to be rockin'..........
This song played at every school dance and roller rink....
Wish I could've grown up in the 60s.
Word
What slangs did you guys use back then?
Especially the roller rinks! I was a floor guard back in the 60's and we played this song a lot!
If you were born in 65 I doubt you were rockin in the 60's
Who else came here to listen it after watching Dexter new blood episode runaway?
Dexter new blood brought me here to this masterpiece
It was 1992, I was 13 years old and my Dad had just bought a double-cassette album of songs of the late 50s and 60s. The cassettes hardly ever made it to the family stereo because they were always in my walkman. I would listen to these songs over and over at night, imagining I was at a dance and a cute boy would ask me to dance. Hahaha. I was clearly born 20 years too late!
Hello, how are you doing today and the entire family and friends doing today i really love this song
Best song featured in either Dexter or New Blood.
Imagine being 15 and hearing this on the waltzers with your new girlfriend/boyfriend
1:10 my favorite part. Always reminded me of a video game. lol
What song from that game? Is there a video of it somewhere?
Lizzy The Geeky Wonder ooh! That's awesome! I adore synthesizers.
Lizzy The Geeky Wonder thanks for that wonderful anecdote! My favorite music these days is Synth Wave. lol
But this one was the "Musitron."
Me too. Always. Weird how those two things trigger randomly.
TY DEXTER NEW BLOOD BEST SHOW EVER
Mr. Krabs in Dexter brought me back to this gem.
