  • Hey guys,
    In this video, Amanda goes over the difference between kicks and flicks in International Jive. She also demonstrates the three different actions of both a kick and a flick: knee action of the standing leg, knee action of the free leg, and the footwork of the standing leg.

    Thanks a lot for the video.
    I have two off-topic questions for the native English speakers here:
    I have never heard a word like “straight” being pronounced with a sh-sound like in „shoe” before. In this video it is always pronounced with “sht” instead of “st“. Is that something regional?
    When she says “the flicks” (0:29), “the standing leg” (2:26) and “the change” (6:38), she pronounces “the” like “ði“ like it is normally done before a vowel sound. Before consonants it is usually “ðə”. Why has she changed the pronunciation in “the flicks”, “the standing leg” and “the change“?
    At 4:46, she says it vice versa when she pronounces “the” in “the ankle” like ðə instead of ði, as it should be before a vowel sound.
    I have always learned: If the indefinite article is “a”, the definite article the is pronounced ðə.
    If the indefinite article is “an”, the definite article the is pronounced ði.
    This rule can be found in every English book. How does it come that there are examples here that don’t follow this? Thanks a lot!!

    Suggestion: After you show the two parts, can you do them to music? Would love to see the step done to music at the end. Thanks.

      Sounds good Eric! We always do demonstration with the music at the end of each video, not sure why we didn’t do it this time. 🤦‍♂️

      I appreciate that you started to rise gradually the tempo... and the phonetic was great to remember by repeating it.

    It would be helpful if you were to do a quick demo with music first, so we would know what it looks like before the long explanation. Thanks for clear and slow instructions.

    Egais Smargis, a ballroom dance expert, realizes that there are two types of jive dancing especially in dancesport jive -
    Swinging jive - where the chasses, kicks, rocks, and ball changes are more grounded with less "tic" feeling across the rest of the body, and using little or no flick actions, and;
    Jumping jive - much more competitive and demanding, with a lot more "flicks" than kicks, and you have more "flick" ball changes than just regular kick ball changes, and there are even flick ball changes even in the basic jive actions. This means moves like the Mooch, Chugging, and maybe even the Coca Rola have more "lifting" in the flicks than anything else.

      i put my hands on opposite sides of a door frame for support while i am concentrating on learning the movements. after the movements are in muscle memory, then i use less support.
