  • Hi guys and WELCOME BACK to JJSAYS! In this video my mom and I venture out into the world and practice a little Chinese while supporting local businesses in Chinatown, NYC! We hope you enjoy!
(PS: Sorry my camera died! 😛)
    ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
    Businesses mentioned:
    ◉ Wo Hop: www.wohopchines...
◉ Aji Ichiban: www.yelp.com/b... (On Yelp it says this location is closed, but it wasn't just a week ago when I filmed this, so I hope that's not true!)

There is no americam town in china because american expats tend to work as english teachers not restaurant or shop owners. There are places expats like to hang out so local people could go there to make friends. But they are not americam exclusive, there are other foreign nationalities there so cant be considered american town. That's the only way AA could possibly live to the old age. Teach your children not to be like those #BLM. We Asian Americans don't protest or care if other Asian Americans got slaughtered / murdered senselessly. We each just mind our business: eat, have sex, go to school, focus on work, and family. After Cantonese and Mandarin, the next most spoken dialect in NYC Chinatown is 福州話, a 閩東 dialect that has some similarities with Taiwan's 閩南話.
Also, many Cantonese speakers also speak a variant of 四邑Cantonese such as 台山話. These Cantonese variants are mutually intelligible with each other.
    Lastly, there's 溫州話 from 浙江.
Although there are hundreds of Chinese dialects, these few dialects probably make up over 90% of Chinese spoken by all individuals in NYC Chinatown.
As for Romanization, unlike Pinyin, some Cantonese Romanization is just made up by the individuals. What's interesting is that in Chinatown, you can still see old 漢化 (Sinonization?) method using 台山話. For example, Manhattan = 文鐵吾 instead of 曼哈頓。

I just love the large portion of Chinese restaurants give to their customers, unlike in the UK, everything is small and expensive. I remember went to a restaurant for a quick bite some time ago in New York, ordered a starter and a main, I was surprised how big portion it was. I was full before I even finished the starter, had to ask for the waiter to take away for the main.

most of the chinese in chinatown were from 台山(a city of 江门, and 江门 is a city in Guangdong province. yup, a city in a city......). so they were probably speaking taishanese, a sub-dialect of cantonese. and i'm kinda from 江门 as well.
