having characters move in and out of lighting to direct the audience's attention is genius, and frankly something a lot of modern films could use more of

In cinema I love those scenes where you can clearly see what is going on in the background. Those big shots where you can see multiple characters et cetera. You can clearly see this in full effect in films such as De Palma's Body Double and Boon Jong-ho's Parasite.

I know you haven't made a video recently, dunno if you're still reading comments at all, but I just found your channel through the algorithm and I think you have some fantastic video essays here. I really liked your Scorsese and Citizen Kane videos bc I thought they analyzed the filmmaking of both with a lot of insight. I hope you come back one day. I know your channel is small, but the videos are top notch. Subscribed!

4:06 One of the few examples of deep-focus where the focal planes are equally bright. Maybe a coincidence, 5:52 or the staging you refer to. 7:26 Reverb in sound design always emphasizes distance, 7:21 and is often created by it.

You managed to keep to video instructional and technical while managing to allow a layman (me) to understand the relevance of the film. Thanks

And Tarrantino cuts between both deep focus and close ups as in Resevoir Dogs Diner scene where he does circular tracking shots on each character around table??
