It wasn’t only the damage, but the wake up mechanics of getting caught back rolling, for another repetitive combo and the long period of time the opponent was getting juggled and wall carried. You could set the controller down and take a few sips from your beverage before you got to play again. These things turned newer players away and many intermediate players. On top of no actual tutorial or way to ease them into it except by introducing powerful brain dead characters. I like the depth and nuance of Tekken, and making it too simple is boring, but TAG 2 had so much nuance to it on top of all the movelists, match up strats and frames you needed to lab to get good on top of the tag mechanics was too much. Casuals never did combos for T5 or T4 etc. These things were only popular in the small niche competitive scenes. Once Tekken competitiveness became more mainstream, suddenly everyone starts caring about frames and combos. Older Tekken was all about neutral gameplay and footsies to most people and throwing out whatever moves you felt like. There was a blissful ignorance to it all. It was only abusive and highlighted the brokenness when it came to competitiveness. The rage and bound system only exacerbated and influenced the juggling even more and suddenly that became the only way to play. Tag2 was a continuation of that with even more shenanigans. Tag 2 came after T6, and T6 and Sthen after T:DR, these games were supposed to stabilize the combo damage of older games, and they some what did, but I think TAG 2 was just too much to learn for most people. That turned a lot of people off. When Tekken revolution came out, people were in love with Tekken again because it was simplistic. But soon the stats and special red move mechanics ruined that scene as well. I think the right balance is to keep the juggles short and not so much damage. And maybe tweak the wall splat combos so they don’t kill so easily.
@@Cr1ms0nRav3n Basically Tekken 4 combos, with Tekken 7 wall mechanics would fit perfectly this short juggles and less dmg at all, and be more focused on footsies and poking to get dmg, instead of just throwing launchers like it's nothing
I played a lot of T5 and was a Bryan main. I could never do TJU but taunt 3+4 was very consistent. It made blocking against Bryan VERY frightening. He didn't have a frustrating low unlike now tho.

The captions were saying how threatening DVJ was and how Bryan had to rely so heavily on his 8f jab but the stuff listed here made it so once he set up that winning position, he just wins, which of course is exactly what happened

I just started getting into Tekken with 5, he's pretty good. I don't know how to use any other character. I like his X, triangle, square, O combo and his Fisherman Slam. His 10 hit combos are hard to do and using King is harder. He has so many moves that need precise timing. Bryan's taunt is hard to pull off because it's square + X + O.
If I remember correctly, snake edge only catch any get up option but not the techrolls, it's the same today unless that you're using d4 instead of snake edge, taunt is reserved for techrolls
Speaking as someone who played this game back in the day, it absolutely was. You could stay down, eat it, and tech off the hit, or you could tech after 1,2,1 and get relaunched.
Oh that B1 launching on hit must have given everyone ptsd because when Bryan's tekken 8 trailer was revealed/leaked and when they saw him do B1 and it launched people were scared because it looked like it launched on normal hit till they rewatched the trailer
