- In this video I am working on an oil painting of a clients house. I often get the question if there's a difference between this kind of work and my own work. Yes, there is a difference. During the process I will tell you more about that.

It's so interesting to compare your oil paintings with your watercolours. I love them both, and they are clearly by the same artist, but in the watercolours, it's as if the paint is a participant in the creativity. The oils feel more like they are under control.

Watching you paint your house portraits makes me nostalgic. It reminds me of my work from when I was working towards my Bachelors of Fine art. In one of my lower level drawing classes we were sent outside to draw what we saw (there were 3 tasks). One of them I chose to draw some old warehouses. I sat on a broken wall in the empty lot next door and on a long narrow sheet of drawing paper I drew them. My classmates were impressed when we had our critique at the end of the period. That was my first year. I circled back around to painting architecture, mostly houses during my last year at University. I would take my 35 mm camera (yes I am that old) and walk around the historic part of town taking pictures of old houses. I would take a dozen pictures or so of one house from all different angles. I take my film to get developed, nothing fancy, just regular prints. Back in the studio I would cut them all up and reassemble them into one. The photo collages had a cubist look. I used the collages a reference for my paintings. My paintings have a more surreal look to them than cubist. I was very proud of them as was my Senior Exit Professor. At the end of the quarter I asked my professor to write me a recommendation to teach at the secondary school level. He took this quite seriously and insisted that I meet him for breakfast that very week to "talk." He wouldn't write the recommendation for me to teach and his reason was that I was too good to teach and should continue to pursue my painting. He was quite adamant. But it wasn't enough to change my mind or lift my confidence. I'm retired now after years of teaching all grade levels, k-12. Since I retired I have been given enough portrait commissions to keep me busy, but after a few years I have grown tired of them because of the lack of freedom, the need to please the client. -- I should find a way to mix in some "free painting" in with my commissions as you do to keep me motivated and fresh. --Thank you for your thoughts. I really enjoy listening to another artist pontificate about art. This is what I miss most about University is the community of artists and the discussions.

Dear Titus, I hope you have a relaxing weekend. Looks like you got wet on your commute. I used to cycle 8 miles (13km) to work and same again back home, in all weather. It was character building, and each ride an adventure. I'm so glad you fit these videos into your schedule. 🤗🙏
"Character building" my father use to say that to when I was a teen and complained about something. Teenagers complain a great deal. 🤗

Thank you so much Titus for sharing your life with us. As you well know life can be joyful but also hard. All we can do is to try and keep the balance I guess. My artistic work is mainly around portraiture. I have recently felt very inspired by your house paintings when I did an architectural painting for a friend, a place where he used to work actually. Your ideas were of great help to inspire me along. My friend can't do much anymore as he's falling severely ill with a condition that has rendered him useless, apart from using the internet to communicate, listening to music or watching TV from his bed. It is a great shame, as like us he was an artist and loved making things with his hands.
I have enjoyed the watercolour and the oil together, but I am really interested in the Marching Band series - at first when you were working on the first one it was really interesting, the light and the figures. But now it is a story and I think that all of us are waiting to see where it goes! Thanks for the great videos. It has become a ritual for me to watch them,

Titus, thank you as always for your sharing! One thing that struck me was your comment about only people living in nice houses want a painting … It made me wonder how powerful it could be to paint t a series of “not nice” houses. Here, such houses often have lots of junk and garbage in the yard. Old, dead vehicles. Tattered or makeshift curtains … signs of poverty, infirmities, lack of education, and occasionally all three and more. But also signs of where our society has failed to lift everyone….
Only people who live in nice houses can afford the painting.
The kind of houses you describe must be beautiful in my opinion 🙂

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and painting processes. The "bridge" between the subject (or idea) and the painter/artist is the exciting part. "Translate" is a good word for this process, but maybe "shaping" is how I think of it. Shaping it for others to understand my creative process in making the painting/artwork. Either way (translating or shaping) it is the process of creativeness which formulates to you (the painter/artist) how to create your ideas in 3D space. I find the results illuminating in so many ways. Good luck next week in your "awakening" of the "sleeping" Marching Band watercolour painting.

I admired the way you painted a commission for the second time. Was it necessary for only you and not the client? Very brave and honest. I love the band paintings. They have atmosphere. The commissions are handsome but without emotion. Atmosphere, emotion, is missing. ❤
You’re talking about that huge white building last spring I guess? I painted that two times indeed. I wanted to do that for myself. The client wanted both paintings!

I really like your videos, I had a quick?...when you owe a gallery, say ten paintings...do you only do ten and focus on those or a few more and pick from the best? Thank you for your time, I don't usually ask for advice but I've found myself in the best conundrum of my life. Happy painting.
Hi, no I don’t focus on ten paintings for an exhibition, I just paint and see how many paintings I be made so far. Then I can decide which one can go to the gallery
I hate commissions! I stopped doing them (for the most part) years ago. The client's expectations can change from moment to moment, no matter how carefully I articulate the terms at the time of contracting.
