19:30 My Mom used to work at liquidation world right up until it closed, They had a lot of cool stuff and I remember getting quite a few new games for incredibly cheap there. Moved away from the area so never really had a reason to come around after my mom stopped working there except for one more time in 05 I think when Sam's Goodies was closing, the next time I was ever around was about 10 years ago when I was taking a bus that came in and out of there to job corps and I had noticed a lot of the change. It's crazy to me it's all gone now, carrs included.
Dang 4 years ago I, I used to work at lake Clark air and the carrs Safeway was my place to eat lunch. Crazy how less than 5 years can change a lot because it was somewhat lively around there.
I also recognize the architecture of the Rock, if I’m not mistaken in the mid 70’s it was a bar that was very happening on the weekends. Drinking age was 19 then.
brings back memories for me as well; thanks for making this video. back in early 1990s for my first trip ever to alaska, coming from anc this was my first stop on my way to denali and fairbanks. i pulled into the mall parking lot and sat in my suv rental for an hour with my roadmap planning my route for the next few days. i recall numerous small airplanes flying directly overheard, later i would learn about the nearby airport that wasn't anc. i went into the mall to get something to eat but it wasnt like a traditional mall there were lots of crafts shops and speciality shops and the food court was different. very packed, very busy. so i went across teh street and down a couple of blocks, that same kfc was there nearby. lol
How sad. We were stationed at Ft. Richardson in the 80s and went there often. It was a treat after a long week at school. I remember Lamonts. Kinney shoes. A locally owned bookstore called The Book Cache. The Arby's. There was a store called Its A Small World. Ice cream shops. At one point there was a Chuck E. Cheese like restaurant and video arcade. I still have a pair of pink shoes bought at Kinneys. I think the decline began with Lamonts closing in the 90s. It always begins with the anchor stores. I remember how crowded it was on Saturdays. Farewell to a once great mall.
Wow it sure has changed so sad. I went there all the time on my way out of town to eagle river or wasilla
wow even The Rock is beat down? That was so new recently
Bro that spot you pointed out at like 1417, that’s the way we used to go through the JCPenney‘s and the footlocker through the back hallways so we could snack stuff that nobody knew we had and then we’d run right back out the back way. Crazy, way too many memories man thank you for posting this
Pause 16:22
That old building use to be a dine-in Pizza Hut when I worked there in the early 90's. It was great working there and food was great! ❤🙏🙂👍
I remember the old Clark building with the Falcon painted on, that’s how you knew you’re in MTV
Hi NuttyNu. Back when I was in Anchorage, the Northway Mall was active as could be. I remember the Royal Fork Buffet on Northway Drive. They had the best buffet anywhere! It was up the street from the Burger King I think. That was around 1987 I think. Did Covid close everything up there?
Royal Fork shut down waaaay before COVID, sometime in the early 1990s I'm pretty sure. I used to go to Royal Fork around 1987 as a kid. First Buffet I ever went too. Did you know ALL the Burger Kings in Anchorage shut down at one point?
Holy shit man what a crazy trip down memory lane. When I was a kid we used to walk from Airport Heights down through the trailer park to the Northway mall. When I got older and got my drivers license we used to go through the same trailer park to the Northway mall. When I was a teenager me and my brother used to manage the Burger King right across from the Northway mall. I remember when they had go carts that you could rent in the parking lot of that Sam’s Club. And we used to get ice cream at the TCBY frozen yogurt right across the street. It is crazy to me how much that area has changed. Thank you brother for sharing memories with a real Alaskan.
What years did y’all manage the BK? We used to go to church nearby and we would frequent the BK, at one point all the BK shut down in Anchorage for several years!
@@juandufree4309 it was the later 80’s through early 90’s
I love the Chinese restaurant there
Excalibur sports was one of the only places in Anchorage you could buy authentic jerseys from all teams all sports. Most other stores had limited supply and few teams
Wow!!! Was a happening place 25 years ago!!
This place used to be so busy back in the day
That place used to be packed and thriving. Sadly so many malls and just old school brick and mortar stores are all struggling.
Back in the mid 1980s when I was in elementary school it was absolutely packed constant stream of people in and out. My siblings got their first jobs there. Even in the mid late 80s with the opening of 5th Avenue they said Northway Mall was going to die. It slowly degraded over the 1990s, Tikatnu Center really did it in
It was already done before Tikatnu was built. This mall was really dead by 02-03.
@@juandufree4309yeah the traffic was low but there were still stores and stuff in 02. I bought some DVDs and got a haircut there in 2002. After Tikatnu Commons it was Excalibur Sports, GNC, and Footlocker and nothing else
I remember people used to smoke cigs in their.
Really!?
I remembered in the 90s Kavas was a Pizza Hut
I could have used the rear transaxle from that Jeep Trailhawk a few days ago. Those are hard to find used around here. Always enjoy your tours Nu.
Also that Kavas was originally a Pizza Hut I went too it as a kid
Id be curious to see what the inside of the rock looks like I used to work at the red Robin back in like 2001
Sams closed that location in 2012. AGMC opened in 2014. They store core samples from all over Alaska.
Burlington actually moved to Tikahtnu Commons
My older sister used to work at the orange Julius in the Northway mall, we used to shop at the Carrs Gottstien grocery store in the Northway mall. Man I feel old watching this video. Keep up the great work brother you got a new subscriber.
Kmart was at where old sams now AIH is currently on old Seward highway. Where Sportsmans warehouse is. Then other Kmart is the one you showed in vid. I remember Kareem Abdul jabar doing autographs. Lol.
Kava's looks like an old Pizza Hut building.
How sad what my city has become. I complained for so many years about anchorage but seeing it get so run down, especially growing up in MTV breaks my heart.
Bro you’re killing me, way before that was Kavas that was Pizza Hut. You got to recognize the architecture and acknowledge what it used to be. We used to go there for the all you can eat pizza buffet once a month when the old man got his big paycheck.
Yes old times, use the stay at penland park with family
And I remember living at an Oxford house and walked down to Carr's there and there was a downed airplane in the parking lot
the kava restaurant used to be pizza hut
there was arcade northway mall only place I like at northway mall I play the simpsons at arcade from northway mall the first arcade I play at northway mall was SNK machine 1991 but the arcade with the simpsons didn't exist at 1991 the SNK machine was near the safeway I moved to anchorage since 1991
bruh i grew up with the coolest stores like "play by play" or "discovery zone" or even that laser tag they had in that space. Good times as a kid!
When we visited the last week of September 2021, We stayed right there at the Aptel Hotel on Rodeo in front of the Home Depot. That Mall had a chinese restaurant inside the old food court. Outside access was to Planet Fitness and I believe a Burlington... That Chinese Restaurant was busy.... Wow, All I seen at the mall now is the Planet Fitness... Plenty of Pics of the mountains from that Geological Parking lot as every morning I was there was a different but beautiful view...
I've only been to the Northway Mall a few times. It was on the opposite end of town where we lived. I went to Romig Jr High, so we'd hang out along Spenard and the surrounding area. Still, kinda sad to see the Northway Mall closed and trashed like that.
the GMC was.. Was Price Savers/then Price Costco/Then Costco/became Sam's Club
I met my first husband working in the mall in 1976.
Me and my brother used to play pool in the Northway mall. We used to play the owners son of the pool hall and we would play for our two hundred dollar pool sticks. Good times good times.
Thanks for the tour. We have had some malls to close in the bigger cities.
I used to shop at Burlington every 2 weeks. Now that it is empty why do they not house the homeless here? We have like 2,000 homeless in Anchorage. They are not campers. I went to Centennial today where I used to camp sometimes and asked homeless people what they wanted. I work in mental health but I volunteer as much as I work. .......Most importantly it has not stopped raining for 2 months!!! They are people, some of them are nuts or addicts but don't make them sleep in the woods and fear bears as if they were animals. I was out talking to residents today. I moved from Fairview near ghetto Carrs to the Boundary area. I am concerned. Its getting quite cool, and it never stops raining.
Some nice memories there, but the possibility of violence I feel killed it. We also had a KMart across from the Dimond center.
I remember going there with my oldest two kids when they were 3 and 5. I knew it was going to run down, no business hard economy I guess. But they should turn that place into a casino if the State allows it.
Man I know I’m making a lot of comments and I sound like a fool, my favorite store in the Northway mall was the code 0 store where I used to buy my Z Cavarichi clothes!!!
Definitely go inside the rock. That’d be cool.
Why haven’t they used the Northway Mall as the homeless shelter? They’ve spent millions anyways. Seems they could of bought it out for what they’ve spent. Turn the old Pizza Hut or whatever it was last, turn that into a soup kitchen. Nice, fully contained and reasonable shelter area. Already close to the majority population of homeless.
They're buying the Aptel to turn it into housing for the homeless. The mall itself supposedly is no longer up to code. The owners are sitting on it waiting for a profitable enough redevelopment proposal.
So many people use to die crossing the Glen Highway instead of using that bridge
I did not know that..!
You can find a good Text at the ADN from August 27th 2020 about the Northway Mall.
@NuttyNu Can you recommend any reasonably priced hotels in Anchorage that are safe? Coming to visit Anchorage and would like a hotel room for around $100 a night which is clean and safe. Not sure if that's possible.
Man, it looks so ghetto compared to when I was there a decade ago. I imagine 5th Avenue Mall and covid probably put the final nail in the coffin for the place.
Me and my friends were just there yesterday 😂
