  • Medical oncology and radiation oncology are two types of cancer treatments offered by BluePearl Pet Hospital. Medical oncology uses chemotherapy or oral medications to treat systemic tumors, or tumors that have spread, while radiation therapy is a method of treating cancerous tumors locally using high-energy X-rays. Radiation therapy is used to treat soft-tissue tumors in the lungs or abdomen as well as nasal or brain tumors. It's also used to clean up margins after a tumor is removed through surgery. If a tumor is too big to remove with surgery, radiation therapy can shrink a tumor down so that it can then be surgically removed. Palliative radiation therapy can relieve pain or reduce a tumor that is obstructing a pet's normal functions. Radiation therapy is typically well tolerated by pets and when a custom treatment plan is in place, it can greatly improve a patient's quality of life.
