    Fun fact: that slug was probably in there eating wasp larvae. Scientists aren't entirely sure how they do it, and it's a phenomenon relatively new to the scientific community, but some species of slugs manage to infiltrate wasp nests undisturbed and raid the nursery chambers for wasp larvae. They may also eat wasp eggs, as well as the organic material that wasps build their nest chamber cells out of.

    To those who say none will be outside the nest at night: WRONG. On two different occasions, I encountered a "sentry" resting a couple inches from the hole. One I saw in time; the other one got me.
    Also be aware that there can be more than one exit from a hive; i sprayed one from a car window and soon saw a tornado of them erupting from a second hole about 20 feet away.

    Mister, let me tell you THE RIGHT WAY to do this. Look at all the wasps flying around to live and rebuild a nest nearby. ( And all that water used. ) Get a piece of common window screen that's 2 feet by 2 feet square. Get 3 concrete blocks, or 3 heavy landscape stones OR heavy wood blocks around a foot long. WAIT UNTIL NIGHT TIME. During the night, ALL of the wasps will be inside the nest and calm. Get your water hose, bottle of DISH SOAP, screen and stones/blocks set up very close by. Do this quietly and don't flop anything on the ground, so as not to disturb the nest. Quietly & quickly place the screen over the nest opening, then quickly BUT GENTLY place all 3 blocks on top of the screen, around the nest opening, so that all the blocks meet. This will prevent any wasps from escaping. If you do it right, not 1 wasp will come out. Next, cut a 1 inch slit in the screen directly over the nest opening. Get your hose ready in-hand, but FIRST, squirt a good gush of dish soap into the nest opening and immediately place the hose end into the screen slit and let those suckers have it. Gush water in there, until your certain the dish soap/water mixture has completely filled the nest. Squirt more water in before you leave. Take a another object, like a rock, and place directly over the nest opening before you leave. LEAVE THE SCREEN & STONES/BLOCKS in place overnight. Come back the next day, and I guarantee you will not see ANY wasps emerge. Take a shovel and dig out what's left of the nest. Refill the hole with the dirt and pack it down. They will NEVER rebuild a nest in that spot. Congrats. This way, you just killed every last wasp in that nest, and NONE were out flying around at night. If your hose won't reach an in-ground nest.........just fill 3 five gallon buckets with water. Works just as good.

      I would say that might not work 100%, I did those method that you speak of and I went the next day and there a shit ton of yellow jackets around and I pour half of the bottle of dish soap and a shit ton of water.

    I just knocked off a nest exactly like this a few weeks ago. It was easy and quick. I marked the place where the hole was by throwing a small piece of wood which happened to be painted white as close to the hole as I could from about five feet away during the daytime when I could see where the hole was. There were a few yellow jackets buzzing around the hole (going in and coming out) but the yellow jackets were not alerted to any serious threat at that time so they left me alone. I noticed that the wood landed above and to the right of the hole about two inches away. This piece of wood serves as a marker and its location is important to know for when you go back later in the dark. You don't want to be fumbling around looking for the opening when you are going for the kill. I then found a rock about the size of the hole opening and saved it.
    I always wake up early anyway so at about 3 AM when the yellow jackets are dormant (think of them as sleeping) I went out and looked for the piece of wood. Without the marker it would have been hard to locate the opening even with the flashlight I had with me. I found the hole almost immediately by estimating from the marker where it should be. I then poured about a quart of gasoline down the hole and immediately plugged it with the rock I had saved. Later in the day (about noontime) I saw one solitary yellow jacket buzzing around where the hole would have been. The next day I removed the rock. I've never seen another yellow jacket in that area to this day. I got the whole nest in one shot. This is the third time I have used this method and have never been stung once.

    • @DATo_DATonian
      @DATo_DATonian 7 років тому +1

      A lumberjack once showed me how to locate a yellow jacket nest. He said to walk your property and look for low flying insects hovering above the ground. OR: From a distance focus on one point in the distance and look for flying insects zipping through the air TO the ground across your line of sight. Do not swat yellow jackets or attempt to kill them with any manual method. If one dies or is injured it releases a scent which immediately alerts the rest of the nest to danger and they will swarm anything near the nest. If they are not alerted you can walk quite close to the nest with no danger (though I don't recommend it) but once the alert is sounded they become killer zombies and attack anything above ground. You cannot outrun them - don't even think about it. I've seen solitary yellow jackets flying at what I would guess to be about 40 miles per hour - seriously.
      Yellow jackets are particularly vicious in the late summer and early fall. The best plan is to trap queens in the spring (May) in yellow jacket traps. There are many plans for these traps on You Tube. One queen can produce 5000 yellow jackets in a season. Put out many traps with sweet bait. As the season wears on the individual yellow jackets are drawn to rotting meat which makes a good bait in late summer and early fall.
      EDIT: All the inhabitants of the nest die at the end of the season except the new queens which fly away. You don't have to worry about the existing hole because new yellow jacket queens will never occupy an old nest in the ground to start their brood.

    Squirt some dawn in the hose first (for day killing I'd use a lot - won't hurt the lawn) and you won't see any touch the water and fly off as it defeats their natural ability to bead water off by killing water tension (that is - even a tiny bit sticks to them like oil on a dog). Even temporary survivors of 'The touch' can't fly for a much longer period and get preoccupied trying to buzz dry wings. a whole nest kill is twice this fast and usu no stings.

I left that powder at the opening of their hive, leaving room for them to escape. And to my knowledge they left peacefully after that. They got to live and I didn't have to continue getting stung while mowing my lawn.

    I know that this is an old video, but you can kill a nest with a hose. The trick is to carefully manipulate the front of the hose from about 10ft back. You have to actually shove the hose into the opening, not beside it. Then turn on the water to full pressure. Returning workers will bunch up around the flooded hole. I spray some mosquito killer to kill them. Then I get a little closer to the hose and push it further into the hole. With enough pressure, you'll break through the top comb and start seeing combs and brood floating into the puddle at the top. It's really satisfying. Keep doing it for 10 minutes. Eventually a queen might float up.

    if you want to flood them out you gotta be ready to do battle: 1. ram a shovel into the nest 2. run 3. wait till they feel safe again 4. run back, jump on the shovel 5. RUN 6. after waiting, pry the shovel to the ground, possibly ripping the nest open. 7. FUCKING RUN! 8. repeat until you have a crater instead of a entrance hole. 9. start watering. every so often run by with your shovel and get a stab in when they calm down again. lastly, you do the shovel to compromise the nest itself, they build the nest to drain water, so you need to shove the water right into the nursery or they wont notice. (edit, if your on a lawn and cant Pry the ground apart, use a rod and a hammer instead of a shovel, same principals, its just harder to run and hit something accurately with a hammer)

    I'd have a bad attitude, too, if a giant tried to flood my house

    I do this on the golf course. The best way to do it is go out early in the morning before they're moving (before daylight)

    Proper Protective gear is needed in doing an extermination effort on Wasps/Hornets etc. Like Military Insect Head Protection worn over a base ball style hat, Gloves and Thick Clots like Sweatshirts are gloves as well to Blouse your Long Pants, Tile the pant Cuffs of blouse them in boots , look for multiable nest holes etc and choose a quick killing methods, like hornet spray, Boiling Water in some cases, and other circumstances where it is safe, Fire, burn them to death. Traps can also work use old Long Plastic bottles like Long Ketchup squeeze plastic bottles(drill several quarter of an inch holes in the top( around the neck of the bottle), place Grape Soda in the bottles(about an inch or two high mixed with inexpensive pancake syrup(They love that) You can also use Fishing string to tie to the top and hank in various places.

    It's even funnier when you've got a ton of them at the scrapyard you work going after pipes full of sugar. Literally you could kick the pipes, they would swarm a bit but no one was stung even once with hundreds of bees about. I think they only really attack you if you are near the nest.
