I think that national anthem scene is one of the best scenes Leslie Nielsen ever did. No matter how many times I see that movie, I never can get through that part without losing it.

Some of the Naked Gun jokes are so subtle. Theres a scene where Leslie Nielsen is trying to use a CC to open a lock. It doesn't take Visa, or MC, it only opens with American Express.

My films and television teacher told me and the class said, that comedy is hard to write. The other film, Mississippi burning is a superb film.Great actors in it

I admire "The Naked Gun" and "The Wizard of Oz" (the latter of the two was in the video segment). "Mississippi Burning" is also a very good drama. Have not seen "Dakota" or "Vincent."
I liked the opening scene of the video, where the woman is getting her cheek pinched and you can hear her teeth rattle! Now that is a special effect I've never5 heard before, and don't expect to hear again.

Roger Ebert has said that The Naked Gun is dumb (but funny) comedy. I disagree. It's brilliant comedy. He mentions that fighting fish in the clip, but that's just part of the whole gag. The pen is highly specialized and impervious to everything except water. What does Drebin do? He accidentally destroys the pen by throwing it into the fish tank, and then he accidentally kills the prized fighting fish while trying to retrieve the pen, then realizes what he's done and tries to get out of there as quickly as he can, and _then_ we see Montalban's character dumbfounded by his dead, impaled prize fish floating at the top of the tank. It's the layers, that make it work so well. Drebin doesn't just destroy the pen. He doesn't just kill the fish. He kills the fish by destroying the pen. And it all flows from his ineptness. He follows that up by acting like a goof who wants to get away before his antics are discovered (classic comedy staple). And then we get the callback in the following scene where the dead fish is floating in the tank. Each element is funny on its own, but it gets funnier the more you think about it because you realize, "Oh, yeah, it's that, too!" And the ultimate brilliance is that it is simple enough to appreciate on a dumb level, so that you don't have to think about it in order to laugh at it.
The only movie critics i c online are either trying to be half comedies or clueless of pre 1970s movies. Both groups are only comprised of people of their 20s. Notice these 2 guys Aren't kids
That 1925 wizard of Oz could have been done by L. frank baum himself. he moved to Hollywood California and with the intent of making movies of all the Oz books
Naked Gun wasn't as good as Police Squad, but it was still a very funny comedy film franchise. It's very difficult to pull off a comedy film - but Zuzker and co. pulled it.
Mississippi Burning was nominated for 7 Oscars, only winning for Cinematography. What many of us do not know is that the movie was criticized by many Civil Rights leaders from the 1960s. Boycotting the film due to the "White Savior" architype and it's overt fictionalization of the events from the film. Which is understandable since the director is from England.
MB has not aged well at all. It's a glossy revenge melodrama that has no insight into the era or the issues. Siskel and Ebert were too carried away with the look, acting and sweep of it to see through it.
@@Trumpetjoe40 no they didn't expect the fbi agents to be black but the film portrays the fbi much more positively than they deserve. in the movie the fbi stop a lynching and come running when a black man is dumped on the street after being assaulted. in real life fbi agents were present and stood by as black citizens were assaulted in broad daylight. they were there only to solve the case of the 3 murdered young men not to get involved in the civil rights movement or to enforce the law. blacks were also portrayed as being submissive and not risking their lives for their freedom except for one brave young boy in the movie. watching the movie you would think that the fbi was responsible for giving black citizens civil rights.
@@Trumpetjoe40 well to you this might be just a movie for entertainment purposes. to the people who lived it and were beaten, locked up in jail for trying to register people to vote, and had friends/family members murdered it is a lot more than just entertainment. how do you not understand why people would be critical of this movie? for most people, watching this film is the only time they have ever heard of chaney, schwerner, and goodman and people who lived this want it to be right.
I think my biggest complaint about the Naked Gun films is that they seemed to have forgotten what made the Police Squad! series work: The series doesn't think it's a comedy - it's just funny as heck. The films are obvious comedies, so (ironically) they are NOT as funny, and they just don't work like the series did. It's also why Young Frankenstein worked and Dracula Dead and Loving It didn't. Plus, Drebin in the movies is just an idiot. And Clouseau was a lot better at THAT approach.

Both the mobie and the series had more than enough comic merits. As bummed as I was that the TV show was canceled so quickly, I was just happy to have a new movie gave us more Police Squad comedy. Ideally I wanted the series to be revived, but getting a few movies was close enough.

Naked Gun received loads of positive reviews from critics, not just Gene. It was one of the better reviewed comedies of its day. Those other films may have been box-office hits but got mostly bad reviews. It's a subjective thing. I mean The Naked Gun was a huge hit, people generally liked it more than those other films, critics especially.
It has multiple songs in it, sung by the characters as part of the story. It's absolutely a musical. A movie can be two different genres as once. Calm down.

The Naked Gun is amazingly funny. Young people don’t get the Zsa Zsa Gabor scene reference.
Siskel & Ebert describing the jokes is quite funny.

Back in the day they almost had classics in every episodes reviewed. Today you are lucky if you get one per year.

M Burning; 1 of the best dramas in history!
I really enjoyed Mississippi Burning. Along with Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe, there's great performances by Brad Dourif and R. Lee Ermy

I agree that Police Squad was a lot sharper than the movies but it's not a grand decline between the two mediums. The movies are more than adequate.
