  • I'm starting to break the engine down and take the overly complex twin turbo setup of the engine to determine the direction for the engine.
The build will be an all new setup introducing some new school technology. Im considering changing over to a trigger sensor and coil packs controlled by a new ECU.
Watch this space as a learn and discover to joys of the toyota generation of engines and their technology.
I have a few options from here as the motor has had work done to it so it may be an option to upgrade the turbos to a single modern alternative while I’m down in the depths of the engine.

Coming from someone that has spent the last 2 years building a 1G I wouldn't recommend it unless you are keeping it near standard spec. My 1G has cost me a fortune and if I had known how hard it was to get parts I would have taken it to the scrap yard and used a different engine. Everything is hard to source and very expensive. I was keen to keep the 1G too because it was already engineered in the car and the engine is more compact and lighter than the 1JZ and it is an amazing sounding engine too. I don't think it was worth the expense though.
    My 1G specs
Oiling modifications done to block, shimmed oil pump etc
    JE pistons 9.5:1
    Standard rods, ARP bolts
    Custom Tighe camshafts
    Custom made adjustable cam gears
    Supertech valvesprings and titanium retainers
Custom made MLS head gasket (cannot buy an off the shelf MLS for 1G anymore)
Custom intake manifold and throttle body setup with LS1 TPS
Waterpump sourced from Yahoo Japan auctions
    Modified distributor with blanking plate
Custom made 6boost exhaust divided T4 flange for EFR Turbo
Borg warner EFR 7163 T4 twin scroll
Yaris coil on plug with custom mounting plate to 1G-GE cam covers
7M-GTE ID1000 injectors for E85, custom fuel rail
Going to be running a Haltech elite 2500
Still trying to get all the little bits and pieces sourced. A lot of gaskets and o-rings can be sourced from Amayama. There are no decent aftermarket bearings available but standard gen3 bearings can be sourced by the same supplier who originally supplied them to Toyota.
Good luck with the build mate

Thanks Mick......i'm aware that its a risk but at this stage im not planning on spending a lot on parts that i cant use on a different engine. I have decided not to go inside the motor and just work on the turbos and intake at this stage and then wack it back in. Hoping it works out because yes i love the sound on the motor. Wish me luck.

@@KamicarzCreations Good idea mate, keep it simple. Hopefully it is a good reliable motor for you. I'll be following your progress. It's good to see the 1G still getting some love.

Take the top rail off the front support with 4 bolts. You will find it easier to remove and fit the engine. I see it still there in this vid. lol
