I remember listening to alive in the first day I went back to school after a year out due to clinical depression. Song holds a very powerful memory inside it for me as it was probably the first time I’d ever felt any sense of happiness and normality in months
The youth of a nation is more about the mental health problems with children. This is the extended story of the late 90's and early 00's trying to survive in a world that told us to shut up and suck it up. Sadly, most are still messed up and in need of help. We need to look and listen to each other and our children so we don't pass down our mental problems.
That was a global thing at that time, a band in my country around the same time this came out made a song about the " broken children of the our nation". We like to romanticized the 90's but hard drugs were so common that everyone knew at least one addict.
Part of the problem with school shootings over the last two decades is that some kids have no sense or understanding of history. It’s almost as if whatever problems they’re facing is the absolute worst and can’t see their problems in any context, leading them to act out. Yes they have problems as does any generation but maybe it’s because I was a history nerd growing up but I feel that any middle/upperclass kid growing up in the 80’s/90’s has had a fairly good life in comparison to generations that came before. If they’re able to put their issues in context then being rejected by the girl you like or a social group isn’t the end of the world as it may seem. Nowadays we do such a poor job of preparing kids for the real world when they get a dose of the real world it’s almost a psychological breakdown.
The "shut up and suck it up" philosophy existed way before the 90's. The 90's was the start of the "ten point" grading scale, participation trophies, "red ink is bad" and "everyone is special" philosophy. I was 15 when Columbine happened. I remember Maury Povich's "Look at me now" episodes.
I can't believe I forgot about this song. This came out in my early 20s. I'm now in my 40s and this song still resonates deeply with me. This is one of those songs that makes me turn my radio up, man. If you liked this one, check out "Alive" by P.O.D.
This song still brings me to tears. We have been crying out for help for decades, and have gone unheard. Now our children are suffering. I grew up being raised by parents who grew up socially conscious in the 70’s and THEY have been crying out for change. When will we all start listening and break the cycles? Our children now have to fight so hard for change, and they are hitting walls of hate and anger. It’s not helping anyone... Sorry guys, this one just hit me hard. As a mother of four, two of them just hitting the world on their own, it’s hard to see them struggle. Even with all that we have taught them and prepared them for. We had caught and hoped for a better world to send them off into, and it’s disappointing to see what world they have emerged into as they first spread their wings. But....we fight on. It’s all we can do.
I know you're gonna love this song before it starts. Deep meanings and sad😓. They wrote this about a school shooting they heard about nearby just before Columbine happened. If memory serves me correctly those pictures are of the Columbine casualties.
The shooting took place 2 years after Columbine, student opened fire on Santana High School in March 2001 and P.O.D.'s rehearsal studio was 2 blocks away so they saw emergency vehicles rush past without realizing what was going on. They were touring Colorado around the time Columbine happened and when they saw the Santana shooting on the news, they began writing the track. The pictures are of casualties not just from Columbine, but all school shootings from 1999 to 2001.
Living in San Diego 1999-2005, this was one of the hot local bands that played all the bars. Their song Alive is awesome too. Even more poignant after the school shooting in El Cajon in 2001.
It was actually in Santee. I was in 3rd grade when the shorting happened. Even though the high school was on the other side of town all the schools were shutdown. Very scary. I remember it so vividly.
I remember this during a time of hard drug use, when I was 19. I'm 39 this month, and I remember this song for how many times its relevant still, to this day. We gotta stand up, and stop the hate ourselves. We gotta do this throwing arms around shoulders and walking together, not fighting, not destroying. Not running. We must stand and walk, one and all, for one and all.
The song was inspired by the Santana High School shooting on March 5th, 2001. The band was doing rehearsals at a place a few blocks away from the high school and noticed emergency vehicles flying by while on a break. After finding out it was a school shooting, they started writing the song. Those were school portraits of school shooting victims, by the way, in certain shots of the video.
Have you done Jeremy by Pearl Jam? It has a similar subject, though it's about one kid. I know you did Runaway Train, which is closer to the mark. 90s had music that was about something.
"Jeremy" is a great Pearl Jam song. I'm pretty sure Jay reacted to "Black" MTV Unplugged but I don't believe he has hit on "Even Flow" yet either. Two great Pearl Jam songs for sure!
"Jeremy" came to mind when watching this. I remember they used to play the video for "Runaway Train" on MTV a lot and it always made me cry :( I felt so bad for those kids
Quote From Wiki "We were rehearsing and writing Satellite a couple of blocks away from the school. One day on the way to the studio, there were all these helicopters and cars speeding by. Jesus was NOT a social justice warrior. He requires us to take up the sword. "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for life." (Paraphrased) = self responsibility. Social justice is a hoax! YOU want something in this life, than work for it. No one owes nothing to no one else. You CANNOT MAKE people think, feel and act the same nor punish them when they don't. That's NOT justice for ANYONE, that's REAL Fascism. btw, come take my guns!! Don't worry, just like through out history, sorry fucks like you will be saved by US and you'll still be the insufferable ingrates you are but, you'll be alive.
So for you Jay, the context behind this song is very powerful. P.O.D. Was recording at a studio in Santee, California and right down the street was Santee High School and that day when they were recording. Someone at Santee High School committed a school shooting. They ran outside to go check what was going on, they knew right there that they were scrapping the entire project and starting over. They came up with Youth Of The Nation in response and out of respect for that day.
POD is a Christian band (Saw them at HeavenFest..along with Skilett and Red..) AMAZING in Concert. Sonny the lead singer is part of the Whosoevers..along with Brian head from Korn.. POD stands for Payable On Death " The band chose this name to be a direct tie in with the Christian theology that explains that since Jesus died on the Cross, Christians' debts to God have been paid for; in other words all believers, in their acceptance that Jesus was sacrificed for them on God's behalf, have inherited eternal life"
As the father of a 17 year old son who committed suicide 11/17/1999 along with his best friend 6 months later, this song really hit home when it came out. To this day this group and it's music holds a special place in my heart.

It's a beautiful thing when an artist or musician can put their finger on a difficult or ugly societal problem. And it's a shame but for a few, nobody really hears the message and so the problem goes on. This is one of the best songs of that generation; powerful, evocative and accurate.
I saw P.O.D. play live in concert in 2019 - it was such an excellent live gig and they played the whole "Satellite" album plus heaps of other tracks \m/
wow I used to listen to the song and I had no idea what it was about. Back then my English wasn't good enough to understand it. It really hits you when after all those years you realize what a song is really about.
The story goes that the band was working on a music video and while taking a break, they heard the sirens and commotion going on not far from them and found out it was a school shooting that had just happened. They immediately went to work on making this song after that to try to use their “platform” to speak out on things that aren’t right that we’re going on then and unfortunately are still going on today.
This was my senior year in high school. It was a dark time for me, and this song still resonates now as much as it did then. Please check out the band Deftones. I recommend you start with their song "Change".
This song as well hits me hard because this was a song my good friend Chester Bennington ( lead from LIKIN PARK ) when this came out he cried when he first heard it. And he actually got to meet .P.O.D PAYABLE ON DEATH is what POD means. I do have some things from them that are private for me I don't like share because after what Chester did he was part of the Youth of the nation Fam. However U and the young now are the Youth of the Nation 🖤🖤 By the way u should check out Live and Learn by Joe Public That song as a strong message as well
Similar hitting bands Papa Roach - Last resort Drowning Pool - Let the bodies hit the floor Trapt - Headstrong Deftones - My own summer Tool - Sober Slipknot - Wait and bleed
We've had gun shootings in Germany too. Back in 2002 only six weeks before my final exams Robert S., a 19yo guy my age, shot 16 kids and teachers before killing himself.
Can't believe this song is 20 years old this year and still so relevant

It's been going on for a while. My best friend took his life in 95. I never got over it.
This song is so strong! I knew it a long time ago, but i hear it today, as it was my first time
This was my senior year in high school. It was a dark time for me, and this song still resonates now as much as it did then.
Please check out the band Deftones. I recommend you start with their song "Change".
This sing brings me to tears to this day
I forgot all about this song until a month or so ago and now I can't help but listen to it
Whew! This song made me think back then. It does the same for me now.
I love watching people react to this music I love so much and listened to growing up
I will always get chills with this song. I heard it for the first time at a concert after pipe bombs were found in my high school.
This song was so hard on me when I was a teenager. I felt so connected to this song because I was really depressed and felt exactly like these kids.
However U and the young now are the Youth of the Nation 🖤🖤
By the way u should check out

Finally! what do i have to do to make you react to any breaking benjamin song?
Why don't you start your own reaction channel bro. Everyone and their mother is doing it.
@@drcorsetti why dont you??? it not my thing lol and i have a job
This reminds me of my concert days, they were awesome live, I used to live for rock shows, lost count after 100.
Another song about similar topics (but completely different genre) that came out in this era was "Stole" by Kelly Rowland.
Since you have also reacted to Garbage, you should try their song “Bleed Like Me.”

100% a bop but also a super deep message.
This song was actually about either his brother or a close friend when the lead singer was younger
A slapping song back in the day 🤘🏽🔥
We've had gun shootings in Germany too. Back in 2002 only six weeks before my final exams Robert S., a 19yo guy my age, shot 16 kids and teachers before killing himself.
