One thing that I think isn’t really being talked about is the use of the “In Heaven” sample from David Lynch’s Eraserhead. That film heavily uses the motif of a newborn child as an element of horror and terror. Except, in that film, we see the adult perspective far more than the child’s.
It makes me wonder how AJR wanted the sample to be interpreted in context to their own song…
I feel it's a retrospective on the futility of it all. we're born into a complex and unfathomable life, and all we can comprehend once we are born is our basic needs. The curse of the living.
It's either the retrospective of life itself and the end of it which could represent the ending of being in your birthday party and the main singer finally realizing that life ISN'T perfect or the exact opposite of it and the fears of birth and death which means that the singer could be a kid learning the truth and not being able to come to terms

Welp i came a year later back to this song and i(think i)still hold the same views as i did back then, this song is just "me look at world as bad that means me is big 'n old 'n wise"
Like sure the world isn't perfect but that's the real beauty, its optimized for us to live in reality instead of reality living in whatever dream world we want
The world isnt perfect not because we dont want it to be perfect but because reality is the collective of everyone's dreams all of them ranging from almost like each other to literally the opssite of everything which why it can never be perfect, for it to be perfect it will have to choose very specific people and make their worlds perfect and leave everyone to suffer more
The downside to everyone being presented equally in reality is that psychopaths exsist and we share the same world as them so they affect the world in purely negative way to everyone but them
The world is everyone's thoughts colliding and the result is that no one is happy you cant satisfy everyone so a world made to do that fails everyone but that doesnt mean we need to enforce our dreams or just give up on our dreams it just means we have to live in this reality together and accept it as it is, a place we live and adapt in
