Absolutely Yes. Coz right after the failed assassination attempt Michael told fredo "not to make a big thing" about the plane waiting to take them to Miami and then, gave him the kiss of death after which Fredo disappeared. When Michael told Fredo at the Cafe that he has already made his move, Fredo desperately asked "What move?" and Michael answered coz he just knew that Fredo was the rat.
I didn't need to ponder this. The answer is Yes! Fredo told someone that Roth was about to be assassinated when he walked out the party saying, "I gotta get a real drink". In my opinion, this was a very poorly told lie. Look at how the army marched straight in to Roth's room. They didn't appear to stop anywhere. Fredo told someone and they called the army. I also think Micheal may have laid this trap for Fredo to test the "mole-leak" theory to find a traitor.
I saw The Godfather 15 years ago as a high schooler, and to this day, every time I watch the film, I discover more nuances. Such a brilliant masterpiece
I believe Michaels eyes were open when he’s talking to Frankie P n Frankie tells him his father never trusted Hyman Roth. The look on Michaels face at that moment tells you he never heard that before. I believe that was the eye opener for Michael.
Disagree. Only because Michael's response to Pentangelli was "I know it was Roth who tried to have me killed." So Frankie didn't express anything Michael wasn't already hip to. It was Frankie Five Angels whose eyes were open when Michael told him the reason he wanted Frankie to "lay down" to the Rosato Brothers was so that he could make Roth feel secure and, thus, potentially discover who the traitor in the family was.
@@CrookedEyeSniper I'm not Don Vito's son from over 3/4s of a century ago. So, to me it's a saying. You're wasting time trying to split a hair that fine.
MICHAEL faced hell...even though he didn't want to, but he knew how to grow. He was always sorry for his actions but he was equally merciless. He was in a situation where he had to be TWISTED...Beware of a MAN, who has no choice but to rule. CHEERS to this beautiful video. 🥂
I've been watching this movie since 2006 and this video filled in a lot of holes. I did not know Michael lost 2 million or fully understood how the Cuban deal worked. And now I see Michael was more vulnerable than ever in Cuba being there was riskier than I thought. What truly saved Michael was his keen patience and instincts. He knew some where that deal was gonna fall apart and when the Cuban president gave his farewell address you can see it on his face that he knew he was right.
If you love the movie?? Read the book it's 100times better more story's on all characters I read it before the movie and I was kind of disappointed with it due to the read .so much better.
I’m pretty sure Fredo informed Johnny ola about Michael’s plan to kill Roth. Fredo was close with Johnny ola which was later established in the movie. As soon as Michael told Fredo that “ Hyman Roth wouldn’t see the new year “ fredo ratted him out. It was a mistake on Michael’s part to tell fredo his plan. I think deep down Michael had his suspicions about Fredo but he just didn’t want to believe that his brother was a snitch.
When Micheal took over, the Corleone Family was not "somewhat small". It was the largest, most powerful and influential of the Five Families, with police, media, judges, politicians on their payroll, with interests across the country. Micheal tried to take it _inter_ national.
@@richieblondet2310 Quote: "Micheal Corleone had uplifted The Corleone Family from a somewhat small, yet powerful mafia family, somewhat confined to the streets of New York." That's wrong. _Vito_ Corleone had done that _long_ before Michael took over.
@@Unpainted_Huffhines Explain how? Under don Vito they had TWO crews. Their interests were predominantly in New York. The Barzini family was bigger from all accounts (the book lays this out). They had interests in ONE Casino in Vegas. Once Michael took over, the family added a crew under Rocco Lampone. They controlled a majority stake in multiple casinos in Vegas. And the Corleone family influence extended into Reno, Nevada, once Michael relocated there and corrupted local elected officials. Vito Corleone had not accomplished this during his reign.
Bro you’re way off about all this. You’re placing way too much importance on the $2 million dollars. It wasn’t about the money at that point. The money was merely just a decoy for both Michael and Roth. Michael was playing along to make it seem like he was still moving forward with the deal and concerned about the money as was Roth. By that point in the movie both parties were solely just trying to find a way to kill the other one without making it appear like they did it. Michael knew before he even met Roth at his house that it was Roth who tried to kill him. His motivation after that point was trying to find out who else was involved and by playing along with the idea that he was oblivious to Roth wanting him dead, the other ppl involved would reveal themselves.
Hyman Roth is based entirely on Meyer Lansky- Lansky and others started casinos in Havana until Castro took over. That’s why the mafia was so invested in JFK and the Bay of Pigs- because they were playing off Kennedys desire to stop communism so they could make a fortune in the gaming industry without having any regulations or taxes. Lansky was also Jewish like Roth, close to organized crime but not a made guy, allegedly very wealthy, extremely cunning and calculated, and was also denied entry into Israel at the end of his life just like Hyman Roth was at the end. He’s basically Lansky in this film with a different name.
@@merkury06 Well obviously. Lol 😂 it's common knowledge. Nixon's tapes show him saying don't let the Democrats investigate the mob because of the bay of pigs thing. Referring to Kennedy. Bay of pigs is synonymous with anything Kennedy or mob related as a code word for the assignation.
Regarding JFK: he needed Illinois and West Virginia to vote for him in order to win. His father, aligned with the mob, got a promise that the mob would get those states. But once in office, JFK and his attorney general brother went after the mob instead of placating them. There’s plenty of evidence of mob involvement in the assassination.
@@merkury06 JFK was killed by the mob because of what happened in Cuba and also because his brother Robert was relentlessly going after the mob bosses who backed JFK in the first place
I disagree with some of the premises and conclusions. Where did the $100M figure come from? Michael's $2M was never held back, he produced it, because he wanted to assure Roth that he did not suspect him of the assasination attempt. How do you figure there was another $2M that was produced earlier but stolen?
That was something that confused me about the video too... all the talk of the "second" bag of two million. Unless someone can tell me exactly what scene/dialogue/etc... references it, I do not remember any mention of or inference toward a magical "other" two million. Just for SAG's - suppose there was - if so, being used as anything other than a decoy to help keep Fredo safe toting it to the island, would make a separate 2 mil a almost definitely extraneous aspect of what was already an overly convoluted plan/require A LOT of unnecessary moving parts, since Fredo got the two mil he was carrying there "right on time" as far as I can tell (Roth's only problem was Mike's hesitation to hand it over)... but again, I can't remember anything in the movie the either directly speaks too or indirectly hints at a "seperate" 2 million in cash making it's way to Cuba. I mean, that detail would HAVE to require at least a conversation between major characters to introduce the subject as being either a possible or actual factor in the movie.
thank you, i’m glad someone else doesn’t agree with this clickbait video. i’m not sure where this YT channel is getting their facts from. please show me where in the movie does it show that michael sent another $2M with a “courier” before arriving to cuba. i don’t think it’s there. it was only fredo and that’s it. only other proof would be the book which i admit i have not read
Roth makes a deal worth 100 million but steals 2 million from Michael whom he tries to lull into believing he's his successor? I don't buy it. Roth would bother to expose himself just for the mere change. Also, Fredo didn't inform the authorities about assassination attempt on Roth, Roth was already becoming suspicious of Michael when Michael held back 2 million dollars and when Roth himself brought up Moe Green and lost his acting for a few moments so he made sure his life is guarded at all times in all places. What I agree is that sending unknown assassin (who's still Sicilian) proves that Michael knew how dangerous and cunning Roth is and didn't want to lose his best men.
Julia, therein lies the Machiavellian Genius in Roth’s plan. (It’s absolute Genius, when you think about it) Roth doesn’t need Michael’s money, but will take it any way to add insult to injury and to totally trash his “so called” genius to his organization, family and the world. Michael’s reputation is disgraced in perpetuity, and Roth can give the two million to Moe Green’s family as restitution BADA BING!!
The thing is Michael comment about the rebels chance of winning and the fact that he held the two mill could make the others back out of the deal as well, and then it wouldnt be just about two millions but much more, and the fact that he held the money and questioned Roth about frank made him in fact expose himself talking about moe green and then machael (who already knew it was Roth who tried to kill him) knew Roths motive!
This editing is wonderful and using clips from Scorsese classics like Goodfellas and Casino is a nice touch, especially considering that FFC originally wanted Marty to direct Part II and even his films serve as an almost alternate history to play during the gap between Godfather Parts II and III.
Do you think there’s any hidden meaning to Roth asking for “a smaller piece” of the cake when offered the first portion? I always thought it was because of his failing health but maybe he was subtly indicating that he had no intention of being greedy in the deal.
It shows that he is weak. In Italian culture, food is an important part of the social structure, and there is a kind of machisimo associated with good eating. If you have diabetes for example, it's not going to go over well that you can't eat mamma's spaghetti when she puts an extra helping on your plate.
I think Fredo would've told someone loyal to Roth to relay the command to the authorities to save Roth from an attempted assassination. I wouldn't trust Fredo with a body in a car and then hoping to blow up the car to clear out the body to ashes.
Ok, I had to stop at about 6:30. Is this going to an entire 15:00 and NEVER get to the real plot about Michael's $2M? It all boils down to revenge. Period. Hyman was playing Michael the entire time, knowing full well that as soon as he got the 2 mil, the government was going to be overthrown and he could tell Michael that his 2 mil went off with the president. What do you think Roth's speech to Michael about "Moe Greene getting shot in the eye and there isn't as much as a plaque to commemorate him" was all about? He KNEW Michael had Greene killed but couldn't act on it because it was a legit mob action. I get the feeling that many younger people aren't familiar with the fact this part of the movie was based loosely on actual events surrounding the 1958 overthrow of the Batista regime by Fidel Castro. The bottom line to the plot is that there was NEVER going to be any "palaces better than any carpet joints we have in Vegas". Roth knew full well that these grand plans were never going to happen. The loose end in all of this is how did Roth know but also thought that Michael didn't. It's not too far a stretch to give them that as part of the plot. Roth was entrenched in Havana while Michael was a newcomer.
Can you make a video about Senator Geary? I always thought it was very coincidental that he was present in Michael's most important moments in the film (assassination attempt day, new year in Havana, senate). I always thought he belonged to Roth initially until the Corleones trapped him, and those insults and threats he threw at Michael were also part of Roth's plan.
He did belong to Roth which is why he felt so comfortable insulting him. but he had no choice but to flip after the killed prostitute incident. However, you can’t trust a guy like that and I’m sure Michael didn’t. But like he said keep your friends close…but your enemies closer. Geary was going to make sure Michael could do what he wanted in Vegas and that was his sole purpose.
I always thought that the comical effect of the senate committee scene implied that Michael was questioned only because he didn’t buy any of them off, or that they’re a bunch of clowns.
I just assumed the senator and Michael's first exchange showed how confident the senator was with his good ol boy Nevada network and gave the audience the basic dynamic of that moment where Italian Mafia first entered as far west as Nevada, and as newcomers, treated as kids whos only way in to an established game is that they agree to be milked. I think the Senator just felt confident in the neighborhood and assumed that he would fall in line. Once they compromised him and had the leverage of blackmail material, he became their go-to guy for US political muscle. It could be more complex than that but I'm not seeing why it has to be
I don't think Fredo informed the authorities of the hit, Roth was a VIP of the president, I don't think Batista thought his exile would be permanent so protecting the main business partner of such profitable venture was in his best interests so sending some guys to fetch him before the rebels were able to take full control was a good move, for his pocket.
Michael Corleone is the type of figure that you may get one shot at. No more. His one Achilles heel was his trusting Fredo, his weak and ignorant brother. That was the crack in the empire's walls. When Roth failed in his hit at Michael's home he was living on borrowed time. Michael, like his father was smarter and more ruthless than anyone he encountered. The way Michael outplayed Roth is the stuff of legend. Asking who put the attempted hit on Pentangeli, Roth completely betrayed his true intentions. Breaking into a rage about his friend Moe Greenes assassination. The greatest mistake any mob figure can make is to make their true feelings known. In the end Michael made Hyman Roth look like an outdated fool. Eightysixing Hyman Roth.
Cannot agree more. I watched the movie many times, and also I'm surprised that an old subtle mob like Hyman Roth disclosed the anger to Michael and he was doomed to fail against his rival.
@@TheCultureMafia But shouldn't this point be in the movie? How has this been confirmed without any source material? Do you have access to some unreleased scripts or something?
@@jasonleetaiwan I’m with you. This is grasping at straws, fan theory with no basis in the material produced by Puzo and Coppola. GF2 has even more plot holes than GF1, like who opened the curtains.
@@lehampton1 GF2 actually isn't as perfect film as many people say. It also wasn't explained what the heck happened with Rocco. Did Michael send him on a suicide mission because he had a hand in the assassination attempt? If Rocco goes after Roth, regardless of the result, wouldn't the FBI and the entire US government know that one of Michael's top lieutenants just put a hit on a business rival? Wouldn't that directly implicate Micheal in the public's view?
I always wondered who tipped off Roths murder attempt..who told the authorities that Michael was attempting to kill roth and got his hit man caught in the act
I watched Part 2 again last week and I wondered that too, only thing I could think of was that they found Jonny Olah 's body and sent guards to Roth's hospital bed.
Excellent video!!! Who told the Authorities about the attempt on Roth in Havana? Either Ola via Fredo or the Authorities probably found Ola's body and went to the Hospital to make sure Roth was all right. If Michael was killed, what would have happened? Fredo would try to take over; but Tom would've succeeded in doing so. The Havana Deal would still fail. Fredo eventually would've told Tom about Roth and Ola. Tom would take out Roth and the Resotto Bros. But Fredo would have lived and no longer be involved in the Family Business. Unfortunately, Vincent in GF 3 wouldn't have been given vital lessons from Michael and be eventually killed by his enemies; like Sonny was.
Vincent wasn't killed in GF III. He saved Michael from the Helicopter Hit when Michael was meeting the heads of the other families, also outside the Opera House when young Michael made his Opera debut. In the end though, it was his daughter Mary who got shot instead of him.
@@ryofang I did. He's talking about GF11 and I was responding to another comment that claimed Vincent was killed in GF111. The Cuban Deal & Roth is pretty complicated so I wasn't getting into it much. Just recalling what Michael himself saw. But that was a different comment .
I think history tells us that the Havana Deal was doomed even if Roth won. There were men in the hills fomenting rebellion against the government, men with no qualms about taking whatever interests the Mafia had in Cuba if and when they found them.
What always amazed me was how Michael could believe that Fredo didn't know Johnny Ola. Freddy spent all those years in Las Vegas with Moe Green. Roth had a piece of "The Rug Joints in Vegas" and Jonny Ola was Roth's Bag Man. It's inconceivable that Michael wouldn't know that, especially after moving the whole operation to Tahoe. @@merkury06 Mike confided to Fredo in Havana that "it was Roth all along" and "I've already made my move....Hyman Roth will never see the New Year" Yes, he told Tom that Fredo was "Stupid and He's Weak" but it seemed that he was oblivious to his brothers treachery when telling him his plans over Banana Daiquiris and Club Soda. That's my take anyways....
It's possible he could have believed it - Ola is one associate of one person associated with Vegas. Likewise Ola is a fairly serious guy, and Fredo was basically acting as Moe's intern/compere/entertainments manager, so he wasn't going to be trusted with dealing with serious matters or people. Fredo is an affable and (apparently) unambitious guy, probably the last person Michael would suspect. On the face of it, Fredo would be a pointless traitor to cultivate since no-one trusts him with important Corleone stuff. As with Vito, Michael initially has a weakness for indulging his family, and so if Fredo appears not to have met someone (or doesn't remember doing so), Michael wouldn't smell a rat. In reality, Fredo was an ideal choice for traitor, since he can be manipulated into opening some drapes to help Ola "scare" Michael in return for a little flattery and a cut of the resulting deal. By "someone close" Michael expected the traitor to be a trusted retainer, rather than actual family. In reality, Fredo could have pretended a nodding acquaintance with Ola ("I saw him with Moe a couple of times") but that might be worse - Michael would have then pumped him for information about this new contact, and Fredo could well have let something slip.

I've watched this whole movie several times and I always was confused on some of the things that happened thanks for clearing up this movie is in my mount Rushmore.
I remember the scene in the club, that Fredo brings everyone, and someone asks Fredo how he found out about this place. I'm expecting him to say the cabbie of course, (having been to Mexico) but he says Johnny Ola, and Michael freezes. It amazed me how many people completely missed that.

So the $2 million was a McGuffin; not the actual reason but the pawn in Roth's game. Both Roth and Michael seemed to miss that Cuba was about to boil over on New Year's Day; at least Michael pretended not to know until literally the last minute before the revolution, but Roth's reassurances were just "sugared words" trying to keep playing Michael.
@@Rockhound6165 I disagree, because Michael--who was a combat veteran--was impressed by the revolutionary who suicide-bombed a police car. His saying that Castro's troops could win a revolution was the minority view among the gang put together by Hyman Roth and the middle-class Cubans--but history proved him right.
Michael saw what was going on in the streets, information/incidents the Cuban Government would have concealed from outsiders as they had controlled over the Press. But Michael saw what was happening, how people were willing to risk/sacrifice themselves for the Revolution, which told Michael that the government was losing control and would soon fail. Still, there was a Chess game he needed to finish before he could leave.
Yes, Freddo betrayed Michael yet again, Freddo was jealous of Michael surpassing him. Furthermore, Roth’s cunning ways (Gambino) made Freddo the perfect “puppet” as The Corleone’s new head.
I felt that the deal was less about making Michael feel safe, but more about protecting himself from retaliation. I mean, if Michael was killed that night, Roth would certainly be on the list of suspects. Involving Michael allowed him to say "Why would I kill him if I need him for this deal?!"
The studio didn’t want Al Pacino. Francis Ford Coppola wanted him for this movie. Al Pacino is in the masterclass. The power, the poise, the cunning evil.

In my humble opinion, I would like to base my conclusions on the idea Mario Puzo did not flesh out the minutiae of every action or motif to all of the situations in the story. And this is still a story of fiction and all of the outcomes are made up in his imagination. Having said this, who opened the curtains for the assassination? I believe Michel sets out on a quest to answer this question. My opinion is Fredo. The phone call Fredo gets late at night when in bed, gives us a clue to the answer. Michel becomes aware of what we know at the night club. Fredo lets it out that he has met Johnny Ola and Roth. I believe Michel knew, at that very moment, it was Roth behind the assassination attempt.

I don't think Roth needed Fredo to get it done. It seems that Roth had it all figured out. He figured that Michael would get the $2 million to him, but had the courrier taken out and pretended the money never arrived. I also think that Roth figured this 'take out' of the courrier would get Michael thinking that Roth somehow was connected to the take out. Roth could justify the rubbing out of Michael by telling his partners that Michael blamed him for the taking out of the courrier, even though Roth told him he had nothing to do with it; that it was coincidental. But since Michael wouldn't believe him and told Roth he'll pay for this, Roth will claim he had no choice but to get rid of Michael. It seems like you're giving Fredo too much credit for this one. I will say that Roth underestimated the power of the Revolutionary forces at that moment in time. He should not have assumed that the President would automatically remain in authority, but taken a wait and see stance before embarking on such an ambitious venture.
It's interesting this point, at the time batista regime had one of the most modern military gear for a island nation. It was a stretch to predict the success of Fidel Castro revolution. But Roth being Roth would have been for careful doing a deal under those circumstances.
The idea that there was another $2 million sent by Michael to Roth, but that Roth had the bagman murdered and lied about never getting the money is, as far as I can tell (after watching the movie a million times), completely made up by the authors of this video. Is it in the book? I admit I've never read the book.
Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you but my take from this video is that you said Roth NEEDED Michael for this deal to go through, not for the money but for Michael's power and influence, so why then would Roth kill him right after getting the 2 million dollars? You said Roth didn't need the money but instead needed Michael's clout so if Michael is killed before everything completely comes to fruition wouldn't the people Michael has clout over potentially back out of the deal? That's why it never made sense to me that Roth would have Michael killed for revenge if he indeed needed Michael for this deal. Roth may have wanted revenge on Michael due to Moe Greene but ultimately Roth is a businessman first and foremost and wants to make as much money as possible. If Michael could help him do that he would do business with him. Basically to sum it up either Roth never needed Michael to begin with and just put up this charade to try to assassinate him or he did need him and was going to work and make money with him.
Also to answer your question about Fredo tipping them off, no I don't believe that. The police probably went to Roth's hotel room for protection from the rebels and they came across Ola dead and at the same time found out he got moved to the hospital and immediately went there to check on him.
This is confusing for me too, but if michael entered the deal (giving the 2 mill) and Roth killed him as planned he would blame the rebels, and i assume everybody else would also already gave their 2 millions so there would be no backing out or they would loose the money invested; if michael was killed in the first attempt i think they would have make fredo enter the deal. As i said im not sure of this but i could be a take, i also didnt believe fredo tipped them off but i remember one scene when michael asks fredo where is he going and fredo anwers "to get a real drink" and that makes me suspicious..
I wouldn’t call the five families as local gangsters. Hyman Roth was below the heads of the five families in power, wealth and reach but he was cunning and saw a weakness in Michael to exploit.
Roth’s net worth is referenced as $300 million. While the 5 families were definitely not “local” gangsters, I’m not sure that all 5 of them were worth more $$ than Roth.
Say what you will about Hymen Roth , but he was a GENIUS.cunning, ruthless, savy, Godfather 2 is my favorite of all the films. The chess match played between Michael and hymen is brilliant.
The logic here doesnt explain (or acknowledge even) the assassination attempt on Michael that opened the movie. Why was Roth trying to kill him before even collecting the 2mill for the deal?
At first Roth just wanted him iced. But after he survived, Roth had to cover his tracks by making Michael a partner. So it was all a smokescreen for Roth to have close access to Michael in order to kill him.
Even though I disagree with the theory in the clip, the logic does make sense because Roth didn't need the 2 million. He just used it to try and fool Michael into thinking it was an investment. It would have looked even more suspicious if Roth let Michael in on the deal for free. Roth wanted Michael and his family out for two reasons - removing competition (he was getting too powerful which is also why the Senator hated him) and revenge for Moe Green.
The biggest puzzle piece that never seems to fit the story is who was responsible for the bedroom shooting in the beginning of the story? If it was Roth then that doesn't fit with this video too well if Roth was trying to get money from Micheal then killing him kills that. If it was Fredo plotting to take out his brother to assume power of the family then who were the gunman they found murdered in the ditch after the hit attempt and by whom? Pantangeli had a legitimate beef with Micheal and the New York situation with the Roth backed Rosato brothers and the gunman were from New York? So how about your theory on the bedroom shooting...who came into Micheal's bedroom while she was sleeping and opened up the drapes? Was it Fredo?
For me the biggest weakness in the plot in the first Godfather film: How was Michael able to rub out all the leaders of the other families and avoid being suspected and or arrested by the authorities?
@@carltontaylor6500: They had the Rico act and they used the IRS in the case of Al Capone. And look at the furor the valentines massacre caused in Chicago
That's why all the hits were done while Michael was christening his nephew. He had an ironclad, totally public alibi. He also had many cops, judges, and media members on his payroll, and the public generally dismissed mob massacres as infighting. They were titillated by the violence, but more concerned with WWII, the new Cold War, Communist infiltration of government, etc. then.
Fredo was weak and very easily manipulated. He was the weak link in the chain and Roth knew this. Michael was wise enough to smell a rat. He used unrecognizable help. Smart move.
The cake symbolised the "Havana Deal", dividing it amongst themselves and so as we soon realise the deal was just a way to lure Michael. Michael was not going to get a piece.
Because he was only "turned" during Michael's stay? He wasn't a soldier for the enemy from the start. 1 - Corleones decide to kill Sollozo and police captain 2 - Protection for Michael set up in Italy 3 - Michael kills Sollozo and police captain 4 - Michael escapes to Italy in secret 5 - Barzini/Tattaglia search for Michael 6 - Barzini/Tattaglia locate Michael 7 - Barzini/Tattaglia identify Fabrizio as a potential asset 8 - Barzini/Tattaglia convince/bribe Fabrizio to betray Michael 9 - Fabrizio attempts to kill Michael 1-4 happen in a single night. 5-9 may have happened over several months.
Interesting video thanks. Though, if I may give some input, I don't think the contemplative nature of the exploration of the psychology of the characters and scenes fits with speeded up clips. It would have been far better with clips that tracked the stately pace of the actual movie.
I was going to mention that. Sometimes the scenes go by way too quickly and it just kind of takes away from the impact. Hard to watch at times as well.
It’s simple why Michel worked with Roth after knowing he setup a hit on him. He wanted to know which member of his family betrayed him and he was willing to put he life in danger to get that answer.
Question For You. 💭 Do You Think Fredo Betrayed Michael "AGAIN" by informing someone about Michaels plan to get rid of Roth? 11:43
Because y are stupid 🙄
Yes. And it was Fredo's second betrayal which made it impossible to forgive him and also made his death necessary.
No, I think that Fredo was trying to brag & let something slip to an "ally" but really was a snake hiding in the long grass...
Read the book. Small details get filled in but more importantly, you get to seen how the direction Coppola took with the movie made it a better story.
Yes!
@@rnash999 The book is good but holy shit a whole chapter on Lucy Mancini's vaginoplasty was a bit odd and unneeded.
@@Flayne009 That was my exact thoughts when reading it. I was baffled as to why that was important to write or to the story. Chekov's vagina.
Michael had impeccable style. I love the scarfs he wears inside of his shirt instead of wearing ties.
I've read that they used the fashion style favored by Lucky Luciano for Michael in Godfather 2
It´s called an ascot. My brother´s pop band used to wear them back in the early Sixties. I even wore one on a few rare occasions back in the day.
The ascots? I don't know, they look pretty pretentious

And now I see Michael was more vulnerable than ever in Cuba being there was riskier than I thought. What truly saved Michael was his keen patience and instincts. When Micheal took over, the Corleone Family was not "somewhat small". It was the largest, most powerful and influential of the Five Families, with police, media, judges, politicians on their payroll, with interests across the country.
Micheal tried to take it _inter_ national.

I agree and I don't know where he gets his idea that there was a previous $2 million that was stolen.
I thought thats the way it was as well
Michael was most interested in finding the traitor in his family
Yeah, the money was sent ahead but stolen then Fredo brought it?
Yeah this dude doesn't go in depth
Are you implying that JFK was killed because of the Bay of Pigs?
Fredo never realized that Micheal was sacrificing his soul for him.
I also don't believe it.
Especially with michaels carefulness yo make sure the plans went through you would think he would have sent someone to make sure the money got there.

(It’s absolute Genius, when you think about it)
Roth doesn’t need Michael’s money, but will take it any way to add insult to injury and to totally trash his “so called” genius to his organization, family and the world.
Michael’s reputation is disgraced in perpetuity, and Roth can give the two million to Moe Green’s family as restitution
BADA BING!!
Roth was a smart man who dealt with numbers, bribes, money so was the smartest enemy Michael had to deal with.
This editing is wonderful and using clips from Scorsese classics like Goodfellas and Casino is a nice touch, especially considering that FFC originally wanted Marty to direct Part II and even his films serve as an almost alternate history to play during the gap between Godfather Parts II and III.
Additional clips from non Godfather films screws the flow. Doesn't enhance it at all. Just my opinion.
@@edwardbloecher4563 I agree. clips of other movies shouldn't be inserted in a Godfather analysis
Do you think there’s any hidden meaning to Roth asking for “a smaller piece” of the cake when offered the first portion? I always thought it was because of his failing health but maybe he was subtly indicating that he had no intention of being greedy in the deal.
I think it's both.
Hey that's a really good point- you may be right! Very subtle way of saying "see? I'm not greedy at all"
It shows that he is weak. In Italian culture, food is an important part of the social structure, and there is a kind of machisimo associated with good eating. If you have diabetes for example, it's not going to go over well that you can't eat mamma's spaghetti when she puts an extra helping on your plate.
Even if not intended(don't know if yes or no), that is an awesome observation.
@@danlora5599 i thought so too. I've seen it a million times, and often wondered why that line was in there and that really does make sense
I think Fredo would've told someone loyal to Roth to relay the command to the authorities to save Roth from an attempted assassination. I wouldn't trust Fredo with a body in a car and then hoping to blow up the car to clear out the body to ashes.
Well done mate!
Thanks for another great 👍 video

I didn’t know 2 million was already sent to Havana with another courier. Wouldn’t Michael smell a rat if that money disappeared?
It seems that he did, because it was after that little incident we find out Michael was now certain it was Roth and so tells Fredo.
GF 2 does have holes in the story. Leaves a lot of conjecture or speculation.
I always wondered who tipped off Roths murder attempt..who told the authorities that Michael was attempting to kill roth and got his hit man caught in the act
And when the courier would be deliverering two million to Cuba.
Fredonia was never party to any important or specific information. He got tricked into talking general stuff about the family's security .
I watched Part 2 again last week and I wondered that too, only thing I could think of was that they found Jonny Olah 's body and sent guards to Roth's hospital bed.
I absolutely LOVE this channel !!
@@Rumkitty2000 read carefully Alex Burt's and reorganize your logic.
@@Rumkitty2000 I know that. I was saying if Michael was killed in Part 2, Vincent wouldn't have been able to learn from Michael.

Lot's of plot armor with the assassination attempt and aftermath with Mike being So Shocked it was Fredo, when he knew it had to be "Somebody Close to Us, Inside" to open the Drapes and set up the Hit...
Yes. I think now that Michael was suspicious of Fredo all along. After the failed hit, he confided in Tom, alone, not Fredo.
@@merkury06
Mike confided to Fredo in Havana that "it was Roth all along" and "I've already made my move....Hyman Roth will never see the New Year" Yes, he told Tom that Fredo was "Stupid and He's Weak" but it seemed that he was oblivious to his brothers treachery when telling him his plans over Banana Daiquiris and Club Soda.

Oh no, Michael knew which is why he didn't give Roth the money.

Michael only knew that Fredo betrayed him
Michael already knew it was Roth, he told frank that and also told fredo before
@@mitchelll3879Micheal knew all along it was Roth behind the assaination attempt revenge for Moe Green & business with one shot, but he wasn't sure who the traitor was, he had no idea it was Fredo hence the most famous line in God Father II..."Fredo you broke my heart"....so this came as a surprise to Micheal. And Fredo knowing he got busted just disappeared into the night, refusing to escape from Cuba with Micheal just reaffirmed what Micheal suspected since he didn't have any "hard evidence" it was Fredo behind the open curtains.
All of a sudden, G2 makes a great deal more sense, thanks for this.

Poor fredo.... We all have a Fredo in our lives. I cut the strings from my one too.
Love these videos.
He wanted to find out who made his brother betray him... Finding the rat takes smarts and time
I'm sorry , how is this "the 2 million were stolen by Ola/Roth" a hidden detail and not sheer speculation?
Dumb video, proves nothing.
Im thinking the same thing
These channels always suck
@@steveevert1152 The Cuba plot is exclusive to the movie, is not in Puzzo's novel.

This video is dope bro.
The idea that there was another $2 million sent by Michael to Roth, but that Roth had the bagman murdered and lied about never getting the money is, as far as I can tell (after watching the movie a million times), completely made up by the authors of this video. Is it in the book? I admit I've never read the book.
This video is a perfect example of a how a motion picture, which is pure fiction, becomes a reality in the minds of millions.
I love this channel
🙏💯
Roth was the closest thing to Vito Corleone, in terms of emotional control and cunningness. “I didn’t ask questions”
Remember the instructions his Dad said? Keep your friends closer, and your enemies closer. Roth was his enemy.
Say what you will about Hymen Roth , but he was a GENIUS.cunning, ruthless, savy, Godfather 2 is my favorite of all the films. The chess match played between Michael and hymen is brilliant.
i never understood why Hyman Roth told the waiter to show everyone the cake? was Enzo the Baker involved?
haha Enzo was beautiful in the GF
Great content 👌
"This is the business that we've chosen."

Where did this new detail about the courier come from? What's the source material?
It was in the original Script
@@TheCultureMafia How are you privy to the original script ?
And where/ how can I get a hold of it ?
Most excellent.
Roth wanted Michael and his family out for two reasons - removing competition (he was getting too powerful which is also why the Senator hated him) and revenge for Moe Green.
exactly, I like this channel but this video is a bit of a hot mess.
When you click a video and think you clicked a different video because the voice you hear is from Simple History. Thanks for great videos.
What a clever old man because of him i never underestimate old people like they are nothing
For me the biggest weakness in the plot in the first Godfather film: How was Michael able to rub out all the leaders of the other families and avoid being suspected and or arrested by the authorities?
Because he rejected Satan
@@jackrockwell6698 And all his pomps.
Arrested for what? He had the local cops/judges in his pocket and the feds wouldn’t have picked him up without a concrete case.
They were titillated by the violence, but more concerned with WWII, the new Cold War, Communist infiltration of government, etc. then.
" smaller piece!" trying to act like he was backing out
Michael refused the tuna fish sandwich that Roth’s wife made. ;).
Fredo was weak and very easily manipulated. He was the weak link in the chain and Roth knew this.
Michael was wise enough to smell a rat. He used unrecognizable help. Smart move.
Talking about distributing the money of Habanas casinos in 1959 sounds really funny knowing history.
Make a video on how Michael thinks and what would had been happened if apoolonia didn't died
Her death killed both of them that day. If she lives no way does he become the evil mastermind because a lot of that came from witnessing her death.
wat a great way to explain
Finally - Martin Sheen answers my GF2 questions…
Why did you clickbait the thumbnail by suggesting the hidden detail was on the cake?
The cake symbolised the "Havana Deal", dividing it amongst themselves and so as we soon realise the deal was just a way to lure Michael. Michael was not going to get a piece.
@@TheCultureMafia Stretch, but... okay.
@@adamchurvis1 nah, still clickbait. There is no 'hidden secret' in the whole damn video. Fraud.

Why did Fabrizio wait so long for the attempt on Michael's life in Sicily?

Interesting video thanks.
Though, if I may give some input, I don't think the contemplative nature of the exploration of the psychology of the characters and scenes fits with speeded up clips. It would have been far better with clips that tracked the stately pace of the actual movie.
I was going to mention that. Sometimes the scenes go by way too quickly and it just kind of takes away from the impact. Hard to watch at times as well.

I like when Roth said his instincts tell him that there is a bag in Michal's room 2 million in it. Freido. Freido is his instincts
Love this
It’s simple why Michel worked with Roth after knowing he setup a hit on him. He wanted to know which member of his family betrayed him and he was willing to put he life in danger to get that answer.
And it a shame that it turned out to be his last surviving brother Fredo.
This explains so much
