Variegated Yarn looks beautiful in the skein, but it doesn't always look so hot when crocheted. But here is a perfect project that can use up your stock. Stained glass granny squares!!

Thanks for sharing this square, I love it. I’m going to make a stain glass window blanket 🇮🇹
Love love love this Robin! Thank you 💜🇬🇧
Fabulous granny pattern! LOVE that yarn color❤awesome ❤
Beautiful
LOVE the stained glass look!
Thanks Dawn!
Oh my lawdy! You spoke to my soul with "you're not going to buy any..." I do this to myself every time until I end up with a basket full of variegated yarns that I can't figure out what to do with. This pattern is PERFECT! Thank you much love from Australia 💜🧡💙💚
I can’t resist it’s just so pretty all wound up in the skein🤗
I’m the same with the variegated yarns. I love them so much and can’t resist. But I don’t knit. I love this stained glass square. Thank you!
It's total yarn candy, and the stores know we can't help ourselves! 🤣🤣
This is the best tutorial on this technique I have found. It has inspired me to make a "red brick wall" with "stained glass windows" blanket. So far it is turning out incredibly beautifully. Using a brick-colored variegated for the "bricks" with a flecked cement color for the "mortar".
My mind is already tossing around the idea of a "wood plank wall" with more "windows". I found a few yarns with the right colors and lovely luster for the "glass" and more matte finishes for the in-betweens. The "wood" might be a bit more challenging to find an appropriate yarn, but I know I'll eventually find it. I have made pieces before by going back with a needle to outline specific areas, but the idea of actually using crochet to make an outline just never really came to me somehow. Duh!
Thank you for this inspiration. These days it seems to be in short supply, like so many other things. Best regards from north Texas.
Thanks Wink!! That sounds like it will be stunning!
I love this stained glass look & have been wanting to do something like this! I also think it’s great that you are demonstrating standing stitches. Since learning those, I never do chains to start. TYSM for the excellent tutorial!
Thank you so much! I like the standing stitch much much more then the chain, it looks so much nicer!
This is just what I've been searching for 🎉
Yay!!😉
A very clever variation. Thank you
Thanks Helen!
Oh how wonderful they ALL are! U so smart💖💖💖💖💖
Thank you 🤗
LOVE THIS❣️
Thank you so much for this tutorial.
🤗
You are so welcome!🤗
This is awesome. Thank you for the tutorial. ❤
You are so welcome!
I made 3 of these large afghans the last 2 months finishing the 3rd wed. Thank you
The back of mine looks a mess cause I refuse to weave in so many ends😂 It's easy to pick up on, and it's pretty. Thank you.
I love this!! Thank you for sharing 🙂
Glad you like it!!
@@KnottingHookCrochet - I learned the hard way to stay away from variegated yarn unless I had matching solids so now I have an excuse to buy more yarn 😃
Thank you!! I bought a bunch thinking I loved the colors together but no matter what pattern I try it looks like a mess! Definitely going to do this!
Glad it was helpful!
LOL!! I do the same and purchase verigated yarn every time!!! I’m making this!
It's a trap. LOL
This is my favorite!
It is a really nice one!! Thanks Diana!
This is exactly what I needed. I want to make a large blanket, but cannot bear long chains and a million rows. It's like mosaic and granny square combined.
🥰🥰
Thank you for this.
My pleasure!
My pleasure!
I crochet with variegated yarn often.
Thank you for this! I didn't know what to do with my yarn! I did the same thing- couldn't resist the beautiful variegated colors and the yarn(same brand) didn't work for color pooling.
Glad it was helpful! Heidi when I shop for yarn I am still drawn to it, and I know better 🤣 somehow I still end up bringing it home.
Very well-done tutorial. It would help if you would list the size of each round after you've finished it. We know it would vary based on our own yarn, hook, and tension, but it would help.
Noted
This looks great. Do you suggest that we keep going around or make multiple squares and attach them?
I like making bigger squares like 7 to 9 rounds. Use different colors of the variegated and stitch them together
I used one of those yarns, the "I love this yarn" brand, it was a different variation of blue/black. I did all alpine in a slouchy winter hat and because of the random color changes it turned out beautiful :)
if I'm paying attention correctly, you're only doing front loops for the black, does that mean the back of the piece is just going to appear as square rings?
That’s like it would be pretty! Yes that is correct front loop for the black and the back will not have it.
Is there a link to a written pattern for this square? It's beautiful ❤
No, sorry
Yes.

I have a pattern that makes a granny square coat, the granny squares are 5 rows... would this equal 5 rows since the little black is in between each row? Would this look nice as a granny square coat?
Make one square and see if it works for you.
Can you please show me the other ones that you did before. This is the first time I see your Chanel.Thank you
I no longer have them it was gifted months ago, sorry.
Where can i get the written pattern
There's a written pattern from Cats Whiskers that's on Ravelry, free download! :)
What weight yarn did you use and what size hook? You never said.
4 weight and a 5.5 mm
What size hook?
start with the recommended size for the yarn you are using then adjust from there.
Wait variegated yarn isn’t meant for crochet?
Well yes it can be used for crochet, it's just hard sometimes to find a stitch that works with it.
Variegated yarn is perfectly fine for crochet. I happen to love it. It is NOT however for people who buy yarn they know they won't like because then it is hard for them to find a pattern to use it in.
It's not a question of method, knitting or crocheting, it depends on your project. Variegated yarn looses its beauty if used in a too large project in the wrong way, i.e. in a blanket that's knitted or crocheted only in rows, it looks like a mess. But if you work squares and connect them with a contrasting colour, it looks amazing.
Hard to follow too fast

Yaaaaaaaayy. I hate the real granny square crochet shape(take away my crochet card!) this is actually pretty. No gaps and chunks and it's so gorgeous. Thank you. I make modern quilts and fiber projects and this is so killer
