Messi had one of his best seasons despite Barça not winning much. But still he was crucial in winning games and ended as top scorer while often playing in that midfield position. Had some bad games where he did nothing and gave away the ball alot in the CL too, but overall this season he has simply been the best once again. Ronaldo can win the Ballon d'Or, it doesn't make him better. Messi will continue to prove it in games because still nobody has everything that Messi does. Still amazing dribbler as we see here, the finishing, passing, game awareness, even free-kicks. It's just too much.

It amazes me that an INDIVIDUAL award is going to someone who's INDIVIDUAL stats aren't as good as another candidates. Messi is ahead of him in goals, assists, shots on target, chances created, key dribbles, AND has a higher overall player rating average. How the hell does that make sense? Yes, Ronaldo scored twice in the CL final, but one goal was when he was unmarked in the box and the other was when he cut through the defense while they were being lazy. He did absolutely NO work for them besides the shot itself. He created NO chances the entire game, had NO key dribbles, and NO key passes. Makes me sick how he is going to win the Ballon D'Or because his TEAM played better this year. It should mean more that Messi has higher averages in every INDIVIDUAL category while playing on a "worse" team. Ridiculous..

The only reason he is rivaling Messi is because he has a more solid team around him, so he scores his little tap-ins and headers. There's no way you can say Messi has not outplayed Ronaldo this season.

Awards in every sport nowadays aren't consistent. Take the NBA for instance, much like Messi, LeBron James is the best player on the planet. Everyone knows it, but he doesn't consistently win the MVP award. Sports are too driven on hype and politics rather than overall skill, which is probably why the player who makes the most headlines wins the awards. Especially with the age of social media we're in.

Exactly my thoughts. Prizes are given away for every other economic reason rather than football. Messi doesnt need any skills, he just makes 3 to 4 touches and he is away from 4 defenders. Ronaldo makes 3 to 4 stepovers and passes the ball to the back. So sad the Ballon d'Dor is only about statistics and not actual performance.
