EPISODE 1- FLOOR SYSTEM
In Episode 1 of the new series, Small Boat Shorts, I will quickly give you a walk thru of my custom floor system in my #jonboattobassboat conversion.
The Small Boat Shorts Series is a collection of quick videos relating to small boat modification. The goal is to make videos around 5 mins that can quickly give you useful information. For more in depth detail, and step by step installations, check out my regular UA-cam series!
"Tiny Boats, Short Vids"
I’m glad I watched the whole video because all I could think about was, if he doesn’t secure his floor panels to the boat they will just float away with all the insulation if he capsizes. Great video. I want to shop for a job boat now...
Yeah man I just implemented the same design they use in residential home construction. In a house a "floating" tongue and groove floor locks together and is not nailed down, simply floating over the foundation. Its locked down around the perimeter by shoe molding trim. Same concept here. My foor floats in base of boat and is locked down by side trim panels and stow compartments that bolt in over it. The emphasis is that you need the foam risers flush with the ribs and your wood floor to have a nice flat fit.
Anthony Jones keep up the good work. I love the clean simplicity of everything. 👍
Dude you have made me think about things I have never thought about now I’m going to build my own boat
Your only limitation is your imagination and your budget!
Thx for responding Anthony. I’m working on my boat build now, I have an idea of making a foldable and tuck away casting deck for back of boat where you sit low to run trolling motor. I have seen no ideas for this at all anywhere. If I figure it out I will send pics.
Good job top gun, the shorts are gonna be a great idea. Do it weekly? Tool talk Tuesday and tiny boat tip Thursday
Great idea for sure. Not sure I'd be able to commit or stay on top of any regular schedule but I believe the Shorts series will give me great opportunities to get more videos out more often on a variety of topics. Thanks for the support man
Your short video has more info than other long videos I have watched.
Haha man, great news!
Nice work bud!
Crazy question. If for some reason you take on a bunch of water wouldn’t the foam sheets want to float out of the boat? The bottom foam is not secured in place and just rests on the floor. Love the vids, keep up the good work!
Foam goes under floor, floor floats freely, flush mounted interior side panels bolt in over floor and lock everything down permanently. Even if flooded there is no way the floor or foam can get out because the side stow compartments and interior panels bolt in over the floor therefore holding it down. I purposely did not glue foam down to give it room to breathe or accept and channel water if necessary.
I see you have the lined foam on bottom. Is that the standard foam at Lowe’s?
R TEC its been a while I believe Lowe's
How much weight have you added to your boat with all the wood and fiberglass resin? Also what size motor are you running?
I did the full boat w about 1 gallon of resin, so that didn't add much. Between the redwood framing, and 11/32 decking, it's pretty light. I can lift the trailer up and move the boat around by hand. I do not know the weight though. The killer is batteries which everyone seems to forget. They see all the decking and framing and just because of it taking up the whole boat they think its heavy. I run 2 batteries and they are 65 pds each. I honestly think my full build is lighter than my two batteries weight combined. Also though, there are guys running 4 batteries or more for electric only systems and they get around fine. I will primarily fish electric only reservoir system we have in GA with a 55 ps thrust for now. I also have a Honda 4 Stroke gas burner 8HP for the bigger lakes. The Honda is a great motor and before my build I have achieved 24 mph so after build I'm think 15+ hopefully.
Could you use celotex ?
I wanna know where you got the drain through flooring inside the hatch
When do u plan to take this thing fishing
Launching in June hoping to catch second half of a tournament here in Georgia electric lakes
man I looked at 11/32 and it is so thin, im a pretty big guy 6'2 255.. think I may go with 15/32 on my deck and 11/32 on the floor...idk what do you think? I have my redwood ripped down and ready to paint, as that is the system im going with instead of aluminum.
It is thin and requires special attention to detail when framing and whatnot. 15/32 is good, 1/2 inch is pretty much the standard, i was just trying to shed some pounds.
How many coats of resin did you apply to the floor boards?
One heavy coat on top, I went a tad thinner on the bottom and depending on the grain it absorbs it a little differently. I did sand the top to level before carpeting.
Thanks. I found your video for waterproofing casting deck hatch w/ fiberglass resin after I asked the question.
Love your videos! Have you ever had problem with ants getting in your foam, I have ant farms built in mine after a year being in the boat?
No, my boat lives in my garage. I have post control spray my house and detached garage every quarter so no issues with ants or bugs getting inside the structure or boat.
what happens when all the foam and stuff gets wet
Gravity works in these boats. Water finds a way towards the drain channels under the foam typically. The foam is closed cell so will not absorb water. Only issue I see is if it gets flooded water getting under the foam and in tight spots and taking forever to dry out and stinking in the process. A lot of the old foam used in the benches of these boats actually absorb water believe it or not. The pros the foam adds compared to the cons are well worth using in my opinion. Also as always stated, my boat is garage kept so will only get wet if rained on the couple times a month i get to take it out.
