    So folks, the weekend is upon us once again! Did you know that I'm gearing up for the next overnight adventure?
    What are you all getting into?

      We're going skiing tomorrow on a nearby track! It has a lean-to shelter halfway and we want to check if there's any firewood left. It will be a chilly 0 degrees Fahrenheit in the morning, but it's going to be a sunny day and the temperature should rise slightly.

      Here's a trivia question for ya "Cool Hand Luke". How many hard boiled eggs did Cool Hand Luke manage to get down? Other than that I'm practicing with my new found gills that have grown in recently from all the rain we're getting. Good video man!

      Yes I agree Luke.... they really need to change the colours, and more importantly extend the the rear of the fly sheet to give the back end more protection...

    I'm going to comment on the color thing to hopefully clear that up. I have a very close friend who works for one of the big companies that manufactures 4 season tents. He himself actual works on tent design. The reason for the color choices is most companies have on 4 season tents is they are made to be used on mountains and expeditions. There they want to have bright colors to help identify the tent in snowy conditions or God forbid an avalanche. Given that most companies that sell true 4 season tents sell 75% + to mountaineers and the like, they take the feedback from these clients who want bright colors to help keep them safe. With that said, there are a few companies that make TRUE 4 season tents in a variety of colors. But most will have yellows and oranges to help be seen in snowy conditions.

      L Long I sort of agree, however, this tent maybe ok for 4 season camping but what it isn’t is a MOUNTAIN tent IMO of course!

      I can see you point and I must agree with you. On the other hand it stops good 4 season tents from being bought from folks who need a little more earthy color for their Winter activities' .

      Yes the colors are a safety feature and as a former military SRT member, yes absolutely helps us in the helicopter see you in a see of white, brown, and green. However there is a huge community that doesn’t want to be seen under any circumstances. It’s true as Americans we haven’t had a war on our mainland since 1865 but that doesn’t mean it will always stay that way. So I myself go between both, stealth and fun camping as I call it.

  • @richardedwin5980
    @richardedwin5980 5 років тому +20

    I prefer the brighter colors myself but that's prolly cuz after years of military service I got tired of O.D. green. Plus if you're in a survival situation you're more likely to be spotted with the bright color which is also why they use brighter colors in alpine conditions where climbers/hikers are prone to avalanches. Plus after a night of boozing it up the tent is easier to find at the campground!!! Lol

      And it's like he was just bursting to say it! I laughed out loud and came down here to comment but thank the technicolour lord your's is the first comment. As an Australian who only sees real weather on holidays, this is now right at the top of my list of 4 season tents I might actually buy. And yeah, in 2023 it's randomly also a thumbs up to the country of Ukraine.

  • @suzisaintjames

    I think you're right about the colors. There's a huge population who won't (not in a million years) buy those colors... survivalists, prepers, SHTF and the like. Their whole mission is stealth. ❤🌅🌵

      When I was in the Air Force I was a SRT operator, so on one level you’re correct, as it does help to find you. However that said, there are situations where you don’t want to be seen. Inexperienced or newbie’s should use brighter colors probably.

    I disagree about the color scheme. I use this tent style mostly in rugged weather above timeberline. There is nothing more depressing than spending days weathered in a tent of "earthtones". It feels like your in a dark, dreary coffin. I want my tent to stick out and add some color to a very grey world which I spend weeks in during the fall. Great review though, thank you.

    The color is for ski touring or mountaineering (especially on glaciers). Makes it easier to spot your tent in clouds, fog, blowing snow, etc. I've always had a soft spot for Sierra Designs stuff, especially their tents. My wife and I rented a 3 person/3 season once, and experienced what seemed like hurricane force winds in a campground. We were the last ones standing. Thanks for all the videos. You have a huge reservoir of knowledge

    I had a Sierra Designs Lookout CD I bought in the 90s. It served me tremendously well, and had those same colors. Back then those colors were kind of the norm. I don't think stealth camping had even been thought of. I found the yellow a very comforting color inside the tent during the day.

    I think the color choice is great for some people, but I agree with you. I prefer natural colors, specifically camouflage patterns. I like hiding my stuff from people for my own safety and to prevent theft. Also so I don't have to deal with people. I understand that bright colors can make the tent easy for you to find, but that issue can be addressed with a brightly colored flag or piece of material. I think it would be great if they offered a fly with a camo on one side and a vibrant color on the other. That way you can choose to hide or be easy to find.

    I think the tent is a good deal. I have a couple of there products that have been good. I am a hunter and hiker that does it mostly to fish mountain streams. I also have represented a sportsman group. Many companies do not want to be involved in blood sports in this segment. Having a green tent may actually hurt their business. We did a lot of conservation projects for habitat and all the outdoor companies would help in that regard. But the blood sports was a line most stayed on one side of. You never hear them talk about it. But it is an important consideration for most of them.

    Good review,
    This tent is made for the mountaineering market, thats the reason for the bright colors.
    Better contrast for finding your tent in a storm when you return to your tent after a summit, or a rescue situation.

    I agree with you on the colors cause if you want to stealth camp you were out of luck in that color also it be nice if that back and basically came down to make like a mini vestibule it would still get airflow but it would protect those zippers or make the zippers waterproof

  • @red6743

    I always assumed the bright colors on 4-season/mountaineering tents were for safety. Could they offer two color options, sure. If you're on the top of a mountain in an emergency situation, I'd want a bright tent. Not to mention the bright color helps illuminate the interior.

  • @JoeJoe4P
    @JoeJoe4P 5 років тому

    It doesn’t have to be an either or decision. For the mountaineers and alpinists the bright colors are awesome. But adding a stealth color combo would open up a whole new market for them.

    Well........it would be nice to see this in earth tones, just sayin'. I am impressed with the size and construction. The price takes it out of my reach a bit, but I'm getting a little old to be doing 4 season stuff anyway........I'm more of a spring/fall camper now (I really like A/C when it's hot lol) but even then, if I camped more this would be a nice nice option.

    Great review. I couldn't tell from the video is there a screen on the small vent also? I have wondered why more 4 season tents aren't better ventilated so that they are more useful in the warmer months. For what they typically seem to cost I think that being better ventilated might sell some more tents to frequent but budget conscious users who would be willing to spend more on a superior tent if they only had to buy one. Throw in an actual packable weight and that is awesome! If not mountaineering more natural/muted colors would be good. How low can you get the weight on that thing Luke?

    Hard to believe manufacture did not respond to the color options immediately and the rear fly length
    As similar comments are all over the forums-
    Yes we get the whole mountain rescue reference or brand specific color but....
    Color option
    And their 3 person option with the two doors and the option to add a second vestibule for a base camp is pretty interesting to think about and mitigates the rear zipper issue-

    I agree to the comments that bright color is for safety purpose. However, can we get one normal color tent out of every ten bright color tent, at least?? BUT NO !!
    NOT every one is going on dangerous mountain hikes(btw you should factor in the risk, if you screw up in dangerous situation, that yellow tent probably won't help much). Most people camp in winter probably doing it in a SAFE camp ground or in a remote country side and a bright orange or red tent just look silly.

    I don't own a four season tent. I live in Texas and it just doesn't cold enough to merit the expensive purchase. If I were in the market for a 4 season tent, that small fly on the rear would cause me not to purchase this tent. I understand that this is a Alpine/Mountaineering tent thus the bright colors for safety but very few purchasers will use a tent in that role. Earth tones should be a option. Nice review thanks.
