- Yo Yo, it’s Ant. I’m super excited to share this with y'all. My boy Will and I teamed up with Katie’s Art Project (see below), and an inspiring young woman named Dariel to write the newest track Cry Today, Smile Tomorrow. We were inspired by Dariel’s story as a young patient battling a terminal illness. The song is about finding the beauty in the struggle. You can hear me perform the full song in Season 2, Episode 6 of Spike Lee’s "She's Gotta Have It" on Netflix, or in the lyric video after this one. When she said she thought more people would be there for her it broke my heart. Through all her downfalls she persevered.
I dont cry too often, but when got to that part, tears ran down my cheeks.

Damn, hearing her talk about the whole hospital thing and how no one came to visit almost had me crying. What a powerful story. I’m going to share both the lyric video and this video as well, as I think people need to hear both.
The song got across so much raw emotion by itself, but to find out the real story behind the lyrics is just so heartbreaking. Dariel, honey, you’re such an inspiration. Hearing you speak about everything you’ve been through, whilst keeping a positive attitude all the time made me cry. You’re a hero! Hope you get to follow your dreams and get where you want to be in life! Wishing all the strength in the world to anyone who needs it!

Whynot, man my favorite type of music videos will always be footage of the artist/band recording the track. i have no clue why either but there's something so moving about stripping off all the antics & outside nonsense...just seeing artists work completely in their element, it's beautiful

Anthony thank you so much for posting this. I’m a pediatric nurse and these programs are so important to kids. Dariel’s story is so inspiring and the song is fantastic. She’s Gotta Have It is one of my favorite movies (yeah, I saw it when it first came out. I’m old lol). Gotta check out the show.
Thank for sharing the story behind this song. It has even more meaning for me now. I am a pediatric hospice nurse and love that a nurse was the one the said “Cry today, smile tomorrow.” I will always remember that line.

This song touches me soooo much with what I am going through in my life. How everyday will get better and I will beat mental health and stress and just over all. ppl bringing me down for my problems instead of lifting me up I will life my own self up from here on out. God has us all
You are not alone in this daily struggle I don't have to know personally to care so please hug someone who you know loves you and that's me hugging you back! We all need a good hug sometimes! I used to be ashamed to tell people about my life dealing with depression and anxiety but it lifts some of the load when you know you are not carrying it by yourself! ! ! Continue to be blessed!

☺️ Cool, 🤗 I have to write to get it out when it's really bad! But music is my #1 go to, then cooking, bike riding, or walking by the water are my peace! I got to get back to my meditation app to help quiet my mind! I also have been in counseling for about a year and a half and it was the best decision I made it was financially on hold for too long! So grateful I can put it in my budget now because I've always been worth it but now I know it for myself! 🙌🏽 Thanks again for receiving the love!!! 💜
Stephanie G. That’s great I am truly happy for you with all that you have done to change your mindset and help you. I started counseling back again I’m not going as much because it does hurt financially. I’ll be going back again soon enough I do the bike riding and working out listening to music I find that it makes me think even more way too much I realize I still hold on to a lot. It would help if I just had someone to vent to and release the stress and the depression or go through and the weight that I feel on a day to day bases when I can’t write. You’re welcome keep spreading the love and the positivity through out this world it does help and give ppl a light that everything can be ok.

What a beautiful video and project you worked on I’m currently doing something like this for the kids at Nicholas st children’s hospital, we do this for them to have hope within the hospital and inspire them through the musical’s. Her story is beautiful! I loved this so much. We are currently working on the musical Cinderella.

For five years and since I was fourteen I've been struggling with treatment resistant depression. I know what it's like to not have any friends, but I do have a family that supports me and I don't think I would be here without them. Dariel, thank you for being vulnerable and for working so hard to be where you are now. I am so proud to be able to listen to all that you have gone through. I am sorry that no one was there for you and I hope that you are well and no longer alone. You give me hope for a better future. This song had me in tears so many times and seeing where it originated from actually made it even the more emotional. This song sings to my heart in so many ways. I know for a fact this song made a lot of people emotional and definitely made grown men cry. Wow, I had absolutely no idea, this story has knocked my socks off. The beauty of Dariel’s soul truly shines through in the song. I worked on a version of it at the piano while I was really unwell a few years back, because it really spoke to me when I heard it in the show. The experience of doing so was both moving and cathartic. My ten year old daughter heard me singing from her bed and, for her next dance performance, chose this song to perform to. Her teacher interpreted the music absolutely beautifully for her and her performance left everyone in tears. Dariel, your soul’s beauty, pain and wisdom has rippled out into the world with such connection and impact. Thank you 💕

My mom has a low stage of cancer and my friend went through a heart transplant last year but thankfully both and doing well and healing. I loved the song and that's what made me come here after seeing the episode but now I love the song, even more, knowing the history. I’ve been fighting depression, and anxiety for the longest time.. When I tell you that this song @ ‘ed me to a T, it did, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I know I have these problems, and I’m fixing them so I hate the pain, I cry today, and I smile tomorrow. Now, because of this song, I know I’m not alone. Whenever it hurts, I remember that there is a purpose of hurting, and it’s only to make me stronger.

I loved this song from the moment I heard it, all the emotions behind it but now hearing the story I love it even more. I lost my 14 yr old niece May 28, 2013 to cancer, how I wish she would have beat it too like this young lady did. But God knows all things and although the pain of losing her is still raw after all these years I know that there was a purpose and I don’t have to know that purpose. I pray this young lady goes on to do amazing things in life!!
