A GPX file, also known as a GPS Exchange Format file, is simply a text file with geographic information such as waypoints, tracks, and routes saved in it. You can use GPX files to transfer that information between GPS units and computers. In this article, I'm going to demystify the GPX file in non-tech language so that you can use them effectively. I'll also answer some common questions such as "what is the difference between a route and a track?"

Best 38 minutes I've spent learning about gpx. Clear and to the point. Thanks for this!
Great to hear, thank you 👍
This is one of the best explanations on GPX that I could find on the net. A wealth of information ... nicely presented. Thank you !!
Thank you! 🙏👍
What a fantastic video, I really liked the examples you gave along the way which put everything clearly into context. Thanks, it'll all be very useful!
Thank you glad it was helpful!! I realized afterwards that I might have geeked out too much here so I'm glad to know that the examples were helpful.
Wow very cool and very very useful info!!!
Thanks alot :) Thank You :) :)
I am very greatful for your video :)
Thank you!
One of the best outdoors channels on UA-cam.
Thank you! I appreciate it!
I'm sure the explanation is clear, but my problem was not knowing much that was assumed here: on a website I found a link t o download a GPX file on my laptop, which I did. I then had no idea what to do with it. I now discover that it manly used on navigations apps on cell phones, something that will no doubt be known to the intended audience here but not to me (my fault).
Thank you. It helps me a lot.
Wow - I just spent some time learning from your excellent instruction - thank you. I do have a question focused on best way to capture a GPX file. I have built about 5 miles of hiking trails on our property and want to create an accurate map. I believe I understand from your video how to transfer to make the map. Can I simply use a GPX app on my Apple Phone? Or do you recommend acquiring a Garmin to record? Appreciate hearing your insights - thank you
Very cool!! thanks so much for these videos! do you ever make custom kml maps? (where you use a map image and align it in google earth and export it.) I would love to see what a custom map looks like on your 66i. An idea for a future video???? anyway thanks again!
Ha it's funny you ask that, I have that on the list. I don't use Earth to do custom maps but do occasionally use CalTopo to create geospatial PDF files that I load. Will try to create it soon.
@@Hikingguy if CalTopo is how you do it, then that's perfect. I have never made a custom map before ( because i still use a GPSmap 60Cx) but I plan to upgrade to the 66i because of your video review on that model.
This is an amazing website I found . I am not an expert but it really fascinate me and it push me to learn more...I made not get to that level, but its nice to know it that is out there...thank you for the very very instructional video
Ah, glad it was helpful and thank you 🙏 - and yea, it can get kind of tech but as long as you know the difference between a track and a route, you're 90% of the way there.
Great viv thanks so much!
Another great video, thx
Thanks for sharing! I learned a lot after watching it.
i guess im asking randomly but does someone know of a tool to get back into an instagram account..?
I was stupid lost my account password. I would love any tips you can offer me.
@Quincy Kristian Instablaster :)
I am looking for a garmin watch for hiking and good gps can track my trail. I don't necessarily use the garmin map during the trail, but just would like to have all my trails track extracted in my computer. I am a beginner, do this for fun. And also want to record my gym, daily exercise, tennis etc. Which garmin would you suggest? Thanks
You can get away with the original Instinct ( amzn.to/3Uxz6yM ) - it's a good and inexpensive way to dip your toe into the Garmin world.
Thanks for the informative video! Is it possible to have the gps track your route instead of having it plan it or give directions? Essentially I am looking to have my hike tracked with exactly where I went and then create that in to a gpx file. I can’t seem to find much on whether or not this is possible anywhere.
Yes, that's a GPX track and is pretty standard on most units. Generally you can record your track, export the GPX, and then view it afterwards.
Hey Hiking Guy,
Thanks for the video! Do you know if or how I can incorporate GPX files with podcasts? Like to make a pod-walk or an audio guide through an app?
Maybe you can send me towards an article or video that can learn me more about it. Thank you in advance!
That's a tough one, I think you'd probably have to go with an app that puts it together for you like this > voicemap.me/tour/new
Great video!
CalTopo can indeed create routes. You just have to chosse track/route before saving.
YES! Thank you. I realized that I said that about a week after I posted the video. The corresponding article is updated to reflect the fact that you can create routes. For others wanting to create a route, it's a small drop down box on the line properties that's open when you are editing it. Thanks again for pointing that out.
Just a quick question!
Why would someone who is new to gps stuff need this level of knowledge? Sorry if I am asking a basic question! I just don’t understand why I would need this information! I guess I thought these devices where to make navigation easier not technically harder! I mean is this something I need to now learn how to do? Just asking! Great video for dure
You don't need this level of knowledge, it is meant to give deeper context for those with some experience who want to know more. If you're new just put a GPX file on your GPS unit and follow it.

Kinda what I thought! However with that being said it seems the more I dove in to your blog I found myself getting more and more fascinated a GPX file and the xml file system. Certainly not going to make a career change(lol) but It certainly explains what happens underneath! I guess that’s my lil geeky coming out 😂 thanks again for your response
