This video brought a tear to my eye. I saw the notice on my way back from work sometime last week and god, how time flies. It has been 15 (maybe 16?) years since I took 174 down this road, when I followed my mom to school during the school holidays to help her out. In those days 174 was served by 3-axled Leyland Olympians. For some reason whenever I took this service I would happen to board SBS 9042X. Not sure if it was pure coincidence or fate, but that doesn't matter anyway. All I would remember was running to the upper deck to get the front right seat, naughtily peering down the periscope and annoying the driver. Haha. But nothing beats hearing the sound of the radiators when it went full throttle and zoomed down Jurong Road at 60km/h (since no one used the stops save for the illegal overstayers/immigrants). All of this while zooming past nothing but lush greenery on the right, and left, the green patch putting you a distance off the PIE. FYI, a little history of this road - it was once the main thoroughfare of Hong Kah Village, which was part of the greater Peng Kang Constituency in the 1960s - 1980s. The village was demolished following the development of Jurong and Jurong West (particularly the Yuhua area). The road was still left as a connection toward the Tuas area, until the PIE was completed around the late 80s. The land was assigned to MINDEF as part of the greater Lam San Training Area, which was accessible via Tracks 20 and 22. (Those who walked through Track 22 as part of their exercises would know that a 50 minute walk would take you right where the current Brickland Estate is). The road could have been closed in the 1980s but it ended up being a secondary access route to the Lam San training area. Around the time when I took 174 in 2004 - 2005 there was nothing on that road save for a plant nursery and an old folks home, the home was closed down in the early 2010s. Around 2018 - 2019 if I remembered correctly the green patch between Jurong Road and PIE served as Foreign Workers' domitories for the development of the Bulim area/JTC Bulim Earthworks. Finally, some of the key landmarks which I remember along Jurong Road according to the video timestamp: 4:51 Track 18 (And yes, back then when the foliage wasn't so thick, you could see the remnants of where one of the Hong Kah Village houses were. A low concrete remains of a wall covered in moss, not sure if it's still there though!) 5:08 Track 20 6:03 Track 22 (The only through access point to the Lam San Training Area, connecting to the Brickland Estate, which was always padlocked.) 6:28 (probably my most favourite part of the ride down this road back then) was where a stream used to be, and an entry point where most illegal immigrants/overstayers went through. I always wonder where it went to but if I am not wrong it ends at the Brickland Estate. Oh yes, there was a small little concrete bridge along that stream! It's truly sad to see the surroundings there have changed so much, and the amount of greenery we are giving up for the building of a new estate. There is nothing I can do about it now but I guess the memories of those times will forever remain etched in my memory. Sorry for the long post.
@@glitchFan2428 hopefully this video will gain more traction once Tengah New Town residents move in.. or history buffs like me looking for the lost past stumble upon this. 🙏
The entire stretch of road is permenantly closed to build the new Tengah estates an Jurong Region Line tracks. 174 now goes through PIE and exit at Bukit Batok Road exit paralle to Jurong Rd
Anyone knows if the service would take less time now from Jurong West to Bukit Batok? Like LTA would likely readjust the bus schedules to fit the new route right?
@@shuchew6458 Yeah the few times I rode it, it definitely takes longer towards BB cuz that exit is a chokepoint. :( Though the way towards Jurong seems to be faster thanks to the shorter route
Thanks for uploading this. Came across this video by chance. I used to drive along this road late at night to go home just to get that "creepy" feeling. Of course I could have use the PIE route, but whats the fun in that? 😁😁
Svc 174 is always plying the roads with double decks. However 2 of the double decks are B9tl cdge’s. One is SBS7434L and another one which i’m not quite sure about is a refurbished B9tl cdge.
The main reason is the Jurong Road is located in a area where upcoming HDB Tengah project are going to be, so they just demolish it since it was underused.
@SBS8660T Lim chu kang techically not a secret road act as its like main road if go for a marathon on whole of sg but punggol rd i didnt know tks for the info

Had memories riding 174 through that road since i and mom are clueless where to stop we end up going all the way to Boon Lay
Haha yeah the bus stops along Jurong road itself are seldom used

Do you or you know of anyone who had footages of Track 22? Would love to see it surface some day.. 😓

This road is best for us to beat traffic in highway but its gone now :(
2:41 that b9tl did not water the grass
2:08 volvo b9tl waters the grass how kind
Haha L🤣L XD
LOL
That was so satisfying to watch
This is like a expressway just lesser vehicles and narrower
Yep
This probably the most bus stops skip by a bus ever just because of a road closure
It used to be the only road to Tuas in the 1970s, remember my dad driving through there to bring me to the seafood restaurant in Tuas.
And now all that's left of this part is the small bit at the heavy vehicle park :/
jroung road is a old road or not?
