maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but Logic’s not so subtle need for approval from Anthony gives me secondhand embarrassment. Logic is a talented guy, and Fantano himself told him to not give a fuck about what he or anyone else has to say about his music. The coolest part about Logics music as a hip-hop head is all the little easter eggs in his beats and sample choices and rhymes but not sure what there is to like if you don't get all his and deep cut hip hop references but a lot of times it feels like he's too on the nose and not enough of his own original sound.
This just comes across as logic still being upset at fantano for giving all those negative reviews to him and trying to say those reviews were invalid picking out flaws in the way he reviews stuff, except he chose someone else’s album to be the subject and did under the guise of ‘comedy’

While I’ll say that I do love the Fantano/Logic dynamic and I think this is a fun video, something about the way that Logic phrases his responses just screams “I’m insecure and I want Anthony to like me,”or “He’s being so mean and harsh to these hard working artists and that’s not fair,” and while I do understand his want for approval because validation is a common need that we want from people we admire, it seems like it’s affecting his “logic”(oh damn) and understanding of criticism and that it isn’t a personal attack on the artist itself. I think it’s pretty impossible for Logic to subconsciously appreciate what Anthony is trying to do. I’m sure he understands and appreciates everything Fantano says, but that part just doesn’t click for him because he wants to believe in himself as much as possible - and accepting criticism generally will undermine your self confidence, even if you are a good listener. I imagine he thinks about reviews of other musicians affecting them in the same way, which is why he gets peeved about Anthony’s skits, jokes, roasts, etc.
It's simply because logic is incapable of being a reviewer himself, he's too empathetic and aware of how sensitive artists are about music they invested care into. Logic is aware of why Fantano does what he does and he admits that it's part of what makes Fantano great but like I said Logic is incapable of relating to Fantanos approach because Logic sees himself in other artists.
That MGK review is my favourite fantano vid next to his Feldman review video, I love that Melon doesn't relish in the negativity and get excited to dunk on something unless it's SO BAD that its interesting.

This was pretty damn entertaining to watch! I do have to say I think the one spot you were off on that Chance review is Zanies & Fools. That track goes hard and Chance has Bars. Chance definitely should’ve ended it, but overall a great track on an album that didn’t have much.

Depth is the exact definition of substance to digest,I personally do not listen to music without depth unless it's the most energetic beat with the most undeserving lyrics that I hate but the beats so good I can push the lyrics off, example:take a step back by ski mask.
Something serious is at stake here: if Fantano did indeed replace his colourful languages and harsh critique with a more respectful approach, many of us probably wouldn’t be here. So the issue here seems to stem from the fact that we collectively revel in Fantano’s “meanness” to pieces of music he dislikes, which in fairness can indeed come across as disparaging to the artists themselves. I think Fantano knows this, so his offer to consider taking on suggestions on how to be more respectful is a little contradictory (even if I don’t doubt his sincerity). Personally I think it’s totally fine - great even in cases - for Fantano to be harsh and mean towards big name artists who dropped the ball. I am more hesitant with smaller artists - though it seems to me that Fantano probably feels this way as well since as far as I know he’s never really been mean to smaller artists.

If you've worked with artists before, this isn't unusual. A lot of creatives are purely about the process of creating, and feel uncomfortable critically evaluating the work of others. It might seem like a crazy blindspot for an artist to have, but as long as they are exploring in their own work, they don't necessarily have to develop a sharply discerning sense of taste to be successful. However, in this case it may explain the highly variable quality of Logic's back catalogue.

I think for me the biggest thing about negative reviews is their date of release. idk when you put yours out bc new fan, but it really bothers me when I read negative reviews for media before I get the chance to form my own opinion on it. if others around you are saying that x media is bad, when you go to listen to / watch / read x media on your own, your perception of it is going to be influenced already. I feel like allowing / encouraging viewers to try it out themselves first is a great way of showing respect to the artist and the listener. but also, ik thumbnails are important and also if you post a review a month late then less people will care. idk cheers love ur vids an example: I went into the new Thor movie expecting it to be bad, and I was sitting there having to get over my own semi-conscious mental block that "people say this movie is bad, therefor I shouldn't like it" when I realized I was enjoying the movie.
I think the thing I like about logic is that he takes his criticism to heart which gives him authenticity, Someone needs to tell Logic that he just needs to be himself and appreciate his fans, ignoring all comparisons. Or to be honest look at Anthony’s responses to your questions, you had him shook a few times lololol. People taking shots at your work mean that you’re relevant. Being an artist is different but you can buy into that world of being relevant etc. Look at Eminem, he has many critics, J Cole may not have as many, Kendrick either, but I think you’re accessible which Eminem is now also. Just being authentic to yourself is the most important thing. Post Malone has haters and he’s more RnB but he made it with less relevancy in that space and continues to pave his own unique path.

My only criticism of Fantano's work isn't the quality of his work but the framing that comes with the territory of UA-cam content creation. There's a level of expectation when a "red flannel review" drops. You expect a certain level of dunking on content, maybe a bit more pageantry, which is why the red flannel reviews get more engagement than non-flannels, regardless of the known quantity of the artist being reviewed. Again, it's all part of the UA-cam game. The flannel bit makes great thumbnails, which helps drive traffic and engagement. But it does tend to skew those negative reviews a bit more harshly than others without saying a word.

The coolest part about Logics music as a hip-hop head is all the little easter eggs in his beats and sample choices and rhymes but not sure what there is to like if you don't get all his and deep cut hip hop references but a lot of times it feels like he's too on the nose and not enough of his own original sound.

I mean… yeah. There’s no law against critiquing someone’s criticism, that’s literally what Fantano is doing in this video. Also, Logic’s point was that Fantano is an entertainer first and foremost. He could be a critic and prioritize his experience in an objective way but that wouldn’t be entertaining. So, he makes videos (like the one Logic reviewed) where he absolutely shreds people. That’s content. It seems, based on your comment, that you definitely didn’t watch Logic’s full video

While I’ll say that I do love the Fantano/Logic dynamic and I think this is a fun video, something about the way that Logic phrases his responses just screams “I’m insecure and I want Anthony to like me,”or “He’s being so mean and harsh to these hard working artists and that’s not fair,” and while I do understand his want for approval because validation is a common need that we want from people we admire, it seems like it’s affecting his “logic”(oh damn) and understanding of criticism and that it isn’t a personal attack on the artist itself. I just find it kind of annoying and slightly off putting.. Maybe I’m taking this too seriously and it ain’t that deep, but it’s something that I noticed, I suppose. It’s all good, Logic! You are a talented individual!

Well said. I was thinking he would offer some well thought out counterpoints but all the video really amounted to was "fantano is a mean and harsh critic." Which entirely misses the point.
I think it’s pretty impossible for Logic to subconsciously appreciate what Anthony is trying to do. I’m sure he understands and appreciates everything Fantano says, but that part just doesn’t click for him because he wants to believe in himself as much as possible - and accepting criticism generally will undermine your self confidence, even if you are a good listener.
I imagine he thinks about reviews of other musicians affecting them in the same way, which is why he gets peeved about Anthony’s skits, jokes, roasts, etc.

It's simply because logic is incapable of being a reviewer himself, he's too empathetic and aware of how sensitive artists are about music they invested care into. Logic is aware of why Fantano does what he does and he admits that it's part of what makes Fantano great but like I said Logic is incapable of relating to Fantanos approach because Logic sees himself in other artists.

This was pretty damn entertaining to watch! I do have to say I think the one spot you were off on that Chance review is Zanies & Fools. That track goes hard and Chance has Bars. Chance definitely should’ve ended it, but overall a great track on an album that didn’t have much.

Depth is the exact definition of substance to digest,I personally do not listen to music without depth unless it's the most energetic beat with the most undeserving lyrics that I hate but the beats so good I can push the lyrics off, example:take a step back by ski mask.
Something serious is at stake here: if Fantano did indeed replace his colourful languages and harsh critique with a more respectful approach, many of us probably wouldn’t be here. So the issue here seems to stem from the fact that we collectively revel in Fantano’s “meanness” to pieces of music he dislikes, which in fairness can indeed come across as disparaging to the artists themselves. I think Fantano knows this, so his offer to consider taking on suggestions on how to be more respectful is a little contradictory (even if I don’t doubt his sincerity). Personally I think it’s totally fine - great even in cases - for Fantano to be harsh and mean towards big name artists who dropped the ball. I am more hesitant with smaller artists - though it seems to me that Fantano probably feels this way as well since as far as I know he’s never really been mean to smaller artists.
Damn. This was more eye-opening than Logic’s review of the review.

If you've worked with artists before, this isn't unusual. A lot of creatives are purely about the process of creating, and feel uncomfortable critically evaluating the work of others. It might seem like a crazy blindspot for an artist to have, but as long as they are exploring in their own work, they don't necessarily have to develop a sharply discerning sense of taste to be successful.
However, in this case it may explain the highly variable quality of Logic's back catalogue.

I don't like country or rap but I've studied music my whole life and have no issue with criticism. In fact it's because of my criticisms that I don't like country or rap. I've legitimately never heard this weird stereotype until now? I'm basically the polar opposite of Logic.

Not necessarily ignorant in a malevolent way, but I know I'm personally highly skeptical of anyone who writes off entire genres of music unless they elaborate sufficiently. It just reeks of an opinion formed through osmosis (i.e. they hang out with people who don't like 'x or x') rather than personal experience and time spent actually listening to it.

I think for me the biggest thing about negative reviews is their date of release. idk when you put yours out bc new fan, but it really bothers me when I read negative reviews for media before I get the chance to form my own opinion on it. if others around you are saying that x media is bad, when you go to listen to / watch / read x media on your own, your perception of it is going to be influenced already. I feel like allowing / encouraging viewers to try it out themselves first is a great way of showing respect to the artist and the listener. but also, ik thumbnails are important and also if you post a review a month late then less people will care. idk cheers love ur vids
an example: I went into the new Thor movie expecting it to be bad, and I was sitting there having to get over my own semi-conscious mental block that "people say this movie is bad, therefor I shouldn't like it" when I realized I was enjoying the movie.

I think the thing I like about logic is that he takes his criticism to heart which gives him authenticity, Someone needs to tell Logic that he just needs to be himself and appreciate his fans, ignoring all comparisons. Or to be honest look at Anthony’s responses to your questions, you had him shook a few times lololol. People taking shots at your work mean that you’re relevant. Being an artist is different but you can buy into that world of being relevant etc. Look at Eminem, he has many critics, J Cole may not have as many, Kendrick either, but I think you’re accessible which Eminem is now also. Just being authentic to yourself is the most important thing. Post Malone has haters and he’s more RnB but he made it with less relevancy in that space and continues to pave his own unique path.

My only criticism of Fantano's work isn't the quality of his work but the framing that comes with the territory of UA-cam content creation. There's a level of expectation when a "red flannel review" drops. You expect a certain level of dunking on content, maybe a bit more pageantry, which is why the red flannel reviews get more engagement than non-flannels, regardless of the known quantity of the artist being reviewed. Again, it's all part of the UA-cam game. The flannel bit makes great thumbnails, which helps drive traffic and engagement. But it does tend to skew those negative reviews a bit more harshly than others without saying a word.
