Massive Upgrade: Chevy Silverado & GMC Sierra Radio Upgrade, Install, & Review for 2015-18 Models!

- Today we're upgrading the factory radio in our 2015 Chevy Silverado! The OEM radio unit had quite a few problems, and Dave was starting to get annoyed with constant screen flicker and changing between menus on its own.
To bring this truck into a more modern era, Dave opted to upgrade with AuCar Auto's 14.5" Tesla display. Not one to "cheap out" on upgrades Dave was very particular in using this product for his truck, after all his truck, Ruby, is his baby.
You can get a 14.5" radio like this here:
Amazon: amzn.to/4cKr9Af
AUCar Auto: aucarauto.com/... (Discount code: twin)
Use promo code: twin at check out to receive $50 dollars off of your order if purchsed through AUCar Auto!
This new radio includes the latest updates for Android Auto and Apple Carplay! These features can also be used wirelessly, which is super convenient because it automatically connects to your phone when you start up the truck. The new radio comes with several other features including an optional built-in GPS, cell service, auxiliary back-up camera or front camera input.
Dave will be following up with an updated video about how this new radio holds up. In the mean time if you have any questions let us know in the comments!
We hope you enjoy the video, and please hit that "Like" button & "Subscribe" to the channel to help support us!

Looks awesome! You made the install seem so easy. Good to have a reference video, if needed. Thanks for sharing. Love how you guys always put some chuckles in your videos.😊
We’re glad you like our videos Elaine! To hear that you enjoy the chuckles makes all the hard work worth it! Thanks again!
Not sure if anymore else said it, but that small external speaker is for door chime and blinker sounds.
So we can eliminate it??
@@robertthomas7239 you can but I wouldn't do it. But I like the chime.
Missed out on showing the reverse camera in action.
That speaker is for when you choose something or the start up will make chime sounds.
Thank you I was very confused
I have a 2016 Silverado and for $100 the dealer did and upgrade on computer and I have Android auto and it works great.
This is for 2015 and older
Could you guys jaut do a quick update in the radio after a year. Just to go over any quirks that you guys have run into over the last year.
Only downside I’ve still had over the course of 8 months owning it when it first released, is always having to link my phone manually verse it picking it up for internet.
Then when I try to UA-cam or etc, I have issues having sound.
I had to adjust the normal dash appearance because it was shifted hard to the right and off center.
They were great on customer service and gave me the code to go into the locked settings and adjust that.
All aside though compared to the oem unit, this is night and day different and much better.
Also forgot to mention.. my gps on this unit is laggy and I’m always off the illuminated pathway. Almost like it doesn’t keep up with normal driving speed..? Anyone else? Resolution to this?
It seems the OEM dash is an issue from the factory and you need to manually adjust it. We even needed to do that. Can’t speak to the gps or unit’s apps. We almost solely use the CarPlay feature, and that work’s fantastically.
How did you adjust the dash appearance? Mine shifts the right but I can't find a way to adjust it. Thanks in advance!
Go to settings and when it requires passcode, Try 7890. I’m not around my truck at the moment, but browse the settings and alignment / screen adjustment. Something around those lines. Mine was straight on setting 3 (for reference)

Would like to see how well the backup cameras work. And if you can add additional cameras for parking.
These look cool at first. Had one in my wife’s Ford Edge. It is very annoying while driving at night.
I like this but I think I want one that keeps the ac the way it was like you said. They do make some 10 inch screens that do that. I guess I will go with that option instead.
Thanks for sharing the instillation, genuine video, and honest review . 👍 by any chance, have you tried the wireless mirroring box on this unit?
We’re glad you liked the video, and found it helpful! We aren’t sure what you’re referring to. You’ll have to elaborate on “wireless mirroring” neither of us are quite sure what you mean.
@@TheBrothersWorkshop I was referring to "HEYINCAR CarPlay Smart Ai Box Plus Android 11 Wireless CarPlay Android Auto UA-cam Netflix IPTV Adapter Car Intelligent System"
I put this in my truck a couple months ago. Its pretty nice but was a bit buggy in the beginning. The support from them isnt bad and they have worked to address the issues i've had.
That’s great to hear! I’m glad you had a good experience with it so far as well. Dave’s only had it in his truck for a little over a month now, and the only issues he’s having is a bit of feedback when using the Bluetooth for phone calls. Something he’s working on adjusting.
Did he ever figure out the issue? @@TheBrothersWorkshop
@@TheBrothersWorkshopDid he figure out the issue? I need something with no interference, that as good as factory or better for Bluetooth phone.
How long did it take for the radio to arrive? @@TheBrothersWorkshop
@TheBrothersWorkshop
Did he figure it out ?
Can you put the Chevrolet logo at the beginning?
Someone in another install video took the factory seat heat and cool switches out of the OEM piece and snapped them into the Tesla model. They are supposed to click right in.
Yeah, that's exactly how it's done!
Huge appreciation for the video, my 2018 has the same flickering issue and sometime will randomly call people or change my music or get me directions to Peru (one time). Did the new head unit fix your issue? Also, were there issues connecting your phone via usb to use CarPlay and keep your phone charged? Mine also has these issue
Would this work with a 2014 gmc Sierra sle?
So after installation I noticed a buzzing notice coming from the rear speakers. I'm thinking its the ground but wanted to see if anyone else had same issues?
7mm btw for the bolts
Thanks for the info!!
I would order one today if it had dual climate knobs. dont want a touch screen to quickly change temp. there are very few things i feel analog is still required for, temp, fan speed and volume are my top.
Does the rear view camera have multiple veiws? (Can the camera be used while driving forward) toggle back and forth or split screen?
No one has answered this question yet
my online gripe with this is temperature control if you spin it fast it won't register which is annoying
We haven't had that happen.. how fast are you spinning it?! 😯
Not even really that fast compared to stock temperature knob you can go from HI to Low in two cranks of the knob normal speed on this one it take like 4-6
What about camera? I hate Parking Nose first, i always park tail first because i hate reversing out of parking spots
Yes, it has a back up camera.
Can you connect an iphone 15 (USB C) to this screen for apple carplay? If not can you connect wirelessly?
What are the legitimate long term reviews/ issues. An audio store told me these are crap, and steered me away from them. Anyone?
Are able to add aftermarket amplifiers through the back side inputs?
Yes.
Did this head unit come with the Android Auto / Apple car play Upgrade kit? or is this something you have to add along with the head unit.
20:13 So you just didn’t watch the video at all is what you’re saying you just exposed yourself smh
Could you help me I’ve purchased 2 of these devices and both am having issues with the volume it won’t go up but everything else works great cuz no sounds nor does it want to turn up
Looking forward to the 2021 part for 2500HD GMC Denali!
Ahhh that means we’ll have to pick up a 2021 for ourselves… 🤔🤔🛻💨
Sane here but 2020 2500 and 21 1500
That was a great video❤
Being 11 months now since the video how has it performed? I'm seriously considering this for my 17 Silverado high country?
It's held up well! Dave is currently planning a 1 year update video for this headunit, and be on the look out for our latest video dropping this week where you can see he still has it installed and it's working well.
Do you have to already have the CarPlay upgrade in the truck or does the unit take care of yhat
disconnect the negative next time on the battery
Thanks bro! 🙌🤙
1. So, did the steering wheel controls work after installing the cable? U guys cut that part out.
2. What did u do to get the audio working? You guys cut that part out too. I've read other comments about the audio no playing after installation.
Everything on our truck works great. Audio not working could be related to improper installation or an issue with the individuals settings.
so after 10 months how is the radio still doing? any issues? or is it still working flawlessly?
We love it! It works great still.
How long did it take to ship and from where did it come from….thanks!
It came from China, and took about a week.
Can I do this on a 2014 gmc Sierra? Your shirt says I can but other sources are telling me otherwise
Our mistake, this is for the 2015 and up.
What should gap spark plug 2015 Silverado 2500 HD LT 6.0??
So will this actually work on a 2014 Chevy I keep seeing 2015 but you have 2014 in the title ?
2015 and up
What aboutvthe usb charging ports that are linked to the current radio. I also have the 2015 ltz silverado
I ordered my bt doesn’t have audio because my aux USB doesn’t work on my truck😞😭
19:06 Hmmm, double layered protector?
😬
I bought and installed this unit and its great... except the sound output. I have a pronounced ground loop (whine/buzz/static) that gets louder with RPM of the engine. It is related to the Aux input on the factory radio (that the tablet uses for sound to the truck). I am trying to diagnose it now. Has anyone run into this problem with this unit and found a fix?
Make a second ground that is bare metal and run it to the radios ground or if you have amps and a system run a better ground to the amps and they say to make sure your rca cables and power wires are ran on different sides of the truck. If that doesn't work and you have amps and a system run a hi/low adapter to the speaker outputs of the radio and then use the rca cables and plug it into the hi/low adapter instead of the radio. Good luck, engine noise is a pain in the ass to deal with!
If you don't have dual zone climate control, will this unit provide that option?
Yes!
What if our truck never had a CD player to begin with? Is that going to create issues?
It should work with any truck GM 2015-19.5. I wasn't aware that any trucks didn't have a CD player.
@@TheBrothersWorkshop well, my husband's truck was the base work truck, no bells and whistles.
So my screen is saying, needs update, they told me my hmi needs to be replace and it's going to cost me 2k. I found one online for 700. But I was wondering, could I bypass the hmi by just updating my screen to one of these?
There are quite a few variables with what you’re asking. Not knowing the root cause of the issue with your truck, and not knowing anything about the screen you found on Amazon (which is most likely different from this one) it’s hard to say if this would help. The kind of radio replacement we installed here, acts as a sort of aux bypass to the main system. If you can control the trucks, audio inputs from the screen on the instrument cluster there’s a good chance that you could bypass the issue with your truck’s, current radio and set your truck to use auxiliary audio which is how this radio replacement is used, controlled, and accessed.
@TheBrothersWorkshop I can control the cluster on my dash with the steering wheel controls but sometimes they don't work unless I hit the power button on the dead screen. I think I'm going to replace my hmi with a used one and have it reprogrammed, and once all my issues are resolved, I will update you to the exact info screen you did. Thank you
Will the heated steering wheel work after? There is one like the ram had which made compatible w gm only thing was heated steering wheel wouldn't work.
It should but I cannot confirm since we don't have a heated steering wheel.
I have two questions, did this fix the issue with the head unit changing all by itself because mines has been doing that for years and every forum I’ve been in has no definitive fix. Also did you figure out what the speaker was for?
I don't know about the head unit changing issue, but the speaker is just for chimes and not needed with a correct install.
Has anyone had an issue with the backup camera not having a signal?
If it is installed correctly it shouldn't have an issue. You could try the camera settings, or the input settings for the unit itself. There are several preprogramed features to help center the camera on the new head unit. The issue may be that your not centered or so far off it doesn't show. Check with the manufacturer on how this is done.
How do u like it after a year?
We love it!
I noticed you have the grey bezel. Does it match the rest of the trim in the truck?
Yes we do! It’s a close match, but not 100% perfect. It is, however, far enough from the other trim pieces to notice any difference.
Put a little loctite on those and you won’t have to worry about them rattling anymore 👍🏼
🤙🏻
Did the OEM backup camera work with it? Is that camera any better at night?
Yes, the OEM camera works.
@@TheBrothersWorkshop thank you. Is the OEM camera still crappy at night, or is it noticeably better?
The link doesn’t work
We just tested the link and it does work. What happened when you click on the link?
Will it fit any Silverado 14-18 regardless of the trim? Just wanna make sure it’ll fit my 2018 LS before I purchase it.
15-18, yes it will fit.
Ok so I just installed it…and I’m pretty disappointed. It seems to take long to connect to Apple play. And not only that..there’s times where it won’t play the music on my Spotify. It just plays what ever is on the radio. Pretty frustrating. And I can’t even raise/ lower the volume.
Hey brother love the video I just installed mine and am having issues hearing UA-cam videos/movies with the apps on the unit but I can hear music just fine through apple car play, any ideas?
Sorry you’re having a trouble, not sure we can help you with that. You may have to reach out directly to the manufacturer. We actually have not tried to use UA-cam videos on that screen.
Were you able to have this fixed? Would love to watch UA-cam on this if I buy one. Still contemplating and a little worried about some reviews. Hope they start fixing this kinks before they sell new ones.
@@therealosea yeah I had a certain wire in the wrong socket, and you also need to plug in the six cord in the center console, and I also had a problem where the unit was outdated so I had one of there workers send me a update file that I had to plug into the usb wire that came with the unit so it’s a hassle but once it’s all working you shouldn’t have any more problems again
My question is. Why doesnt the factory gm gps antenna work with it. Or is the included antenna for those who didnt have one
I believe it's for people who didn't have one to begin with.
I am still wondering if my stock sub from the factory would still work
I'm sure if it's stuck at work. If it's aftermarket I'm not sure.
Does this support Sirius XM Radio like the factory unit?
It allowed you to access the factory Sirius settings
@@TheBrothersWorkshop Excellent, that would be a deal breaker for me if it didnt. Thanks!
My 2014 Sierra has heated seats, does this head unit have no place to connect them? Will i lose the functionality of heated seats?
You will not loose the heated seats. Dave explains this in the video.
Does the radio fm am work
It does!
you need to remove the ground not the positive battery cable…
🤙
How’s the sound quality of this unit vs the stock system?
Reason I ask is I’ve used a decent android audio head unit from atoto? Off Amazon in the past and just didn’t sound all that great.
For this unit there is no noticeable change in sound quality. The only quality change we noticed is when using Bluetooth calling. We’re working on seeing if there is a fix for this, and once we identify it we’ll make a video about it.
Is onstar affected? And does the remote start still function?
We don't have OnStar so I can't help you there. However the remote start still works fine.
I was curious if the remote start worked on the app still since in runs on onstar.@@TheBrothersWorkshop
It's this compatible with the oem backup camera?
It is!
Will this work on a 2014 silverado?
Yes, it’s designed for 2014-2018 Silverados and Sierras
What brand or make is this telsa screen ?
That’s pretty sweet!
Dude it really is! It’s been an awesome upgrade for the truck. Now time for a lift kit 👀👀
Will it fit the 2014? Their website says it’s for 2015 and up
I got the same question the website say only 2015 ??
Reach out to the manufacturer to verify. The 2014-2015 trucks aren’t all that different but there are a few slight changes. This unit acts as a bypass for the original head unit. Knowing the makeup of the 2014 vs the 2015 we don’t see why it wouldn’t work, but check with the manufacturer before you purchase.
Most of the time console app works but after a while is fluctuates and freezes, touch and sound works, but screen is frozen.
We haven't had any issues like that.
Reverse camera work
$1099,99 for an android head unit! 🤕🤢
🤙🙌
Can I watch UA-cam while driving
That is illegal sir.
50k truck guys. Don’t mess with the wiring lol. Buy an iPad mini get hot spot on your cell phone
We did not mess with any wires during the installation process. This head unit is plug and play.
My question is … when you remote start the truck will the new head unit allow you set the parameters of what you want it to do when remote start is engaged, such as turn on/off your heated seats ?
If it's anything like the one Linkswell makes then yes you can go into the settings and pull up the OEM dashboard and customize your settings
Really considering buying this for my 14’ Silverado. I’m not a big tech guy so can someone explain the options on their website for 8GB of Ram vs the 4GB of ram ?
It boils for to speed of the unit switching between screens and using music or videos you’ve uploaded to the head unit. Depending on what you’re planning to do with it this question may be suited for the manufacture.
I absolutely love the head unit. I subscribe to Onstar does it work well or at all with onstar. I use it to do the navigation turn by turn feature from the app. Does the headunit work ?
This is very helpful. I can't wait to install mine. Thank you.
Glad we could help
Thank for the radio upgrade. I'm having the same problem. Now I know to replace the radio.
The problem is flickering between screens doesn’t necessarily go away because it’s an issue with the truck’s computer, but the flickering definitely does not affect the new headunit because it acts as a bypass to be original radio system.
Only part you forgot to show us how to install was the final part😂, the “camsumthnig box”loll what was tht for??
My husbands ‘15 Silverado has a messed up radio and ever time start the truck the voice “this vehicle is equipped with Onstar etc” repeatedly. How can we just disconnect onstar or would we have to replace the whole radio? That onstar lady is annoying.
I've actually never heard of anybody having that issue. I would have to look into it for you.
My radio had phantom pushes and would randomly change stations or output without ever touching the screen. I ordered a replacement digitizer and installed it in about 10 minutes and works like new. Also 2015 silverado
this is pretty sweet and the price is good but the deal breaker for me is all that plastic. the cowling that surrounds my current radio is metal and it is one of my favorite things about the interior of my truck, I love the actual metal. replacing it with grey plastic seems like a huge downgrade and I will not be doing that.
Thanks for the video. just bought mine and used you code! will be subbing for future videos!
Glad to hear it!! 🙌
Do you have the factory bose system if not does it integrate with it because I've heard horror stories of people with the bose radio and aftermarket stuff
No, we do not, Dave’s truck is a Z71 LT model, and did not come with the Bose system. That might be a question more better directed towards the manufacture.
@@TheBrothersWorkshop thank you for your reply and great job on the videos
Thank you!
Integrates with the Bose system! (I have a 2016 Chevy 3500hd high country 6.6L- works great, once you get through the learning curve of operating it)
So it will work with Bose stock system? I know on the linkswell unit you have to purchase another harness if your truck has a Bose system in it stock. Ready to pull the trigger on this unit but want to make sure it will work with my Bose system
Hi does this radio have rca input for aftermarket subwoofer Connection on harness
following
Almost did the same thing with full replacement. Had the same issues with the ghost touches, found the replacement touch screen on Amazon for $35 and about 40 minutes worth of work and its perfect again.
What is it listed as, the name, in Amazon? Did the middle of your screen fail, couldn’t select anything in the middle of your screens?
One year review?
It's on the way. Dave is planing one in the next few weeks... For now you can see it in our next video that comes out this week. He still runs this unit and is happy with how it works.
For some reason I hooked up my unit and I don’t have Bluetooth option on the dash and when I play music on the unit it’s not switching over to music. It gives me satellite and am/fm
Contact the manufacturer for issues like this, they can help.
Does it have the ability to change the car to truck in doors open image and reverse screen car image?
Not sure, we haven’t tried to change it. That’s probably a question better geared to the manufacturer. Thanks for watching!
what happens to xm radio? do you put the xm app onto the device?
I just installed the 14.5 inch android radio in my 2016 Silverado. Everything looked great at start, even steering controls are fine but when I connected my phone to CarPlay, I get no sound from any CarPlay app. They show that they are playing but not sound. Checking my phone, it connect with Bluetooth and then most time shows disconnected but CarPlay is still on the screen. Now the open door indicators are reversed? Any chance this can be caused by picking the wrong choice when trying to get the screen centered? (GM has 9 modes to choose from)
Check to verify that you’re using the aux input from the audio selection, and that you have the aux cord that was supplied in the kit plugged into the aux port, located in your jumpseat or in your center consul, depending on the model truck you have. The new radio acts as if it’s a auxiliary input. If you have an LT trim model truck you should have the option to select the aux inputting from the dash computer. We hope that works.
Will this work with an aftermarket full sound system
Does this hook to your factory mic for phone calls?
I am currently trying to order one myself, however I am having trouble on the verification email. It just wont send one. Anyone else have this problem? Also how did you guys contact customer support? EMail? cant find a phone number. Thanks!
Not sure, we were in direct contact with them. We’ve had other viewers comment that the my had no problem with reaching customer service.
Before I purchase, would you do this again? Meaning still worth it? No issues/hiccups?
Thanks in advance.
2014 GMC Sierra All Terrain owner.
We only had one issue (unit turned off and we needed to restart it by unplugging it.) after that we’ve had it for almost 2 months now with no other issues. The wireless CarPlay was the biggest change, and it’s been great to have. Verify with the manufacturer before purchasing that it will work on your 2014 truck. It seems they changed some of the language on their website to reflect it’s made for 2015 and up.
Looks slow
Far from it!
Thanks for making this video. Can this head unit access the builtin SiriusXM radio?
Yes it can, it has an option to display the original radio on the head unit where you can access, SiriusXM, or your AM/FM radio
@@TheBrothersWorkshop thanks!! I’ll want one of these for my 2015 GMC Sierra, which is starting to look a little dated.
That’s exactly why we upgraded ours! That CarPlay was a wonderful addition
How does it work with the stock hands free calling, the microphone portion? Does it have its own external mic you have to install or does it work with the factory mic?
It works well with the factory mic.
those screens should go black when driving there is enough idiots on the road drivin distracted
Drivers are responsible for their own actions.
I have the LTZ trim with bose speakers. Does it need any special wiring for Bose system?
I'm sorry I wouldn't know. That would be a question for the manufacturer. We have a standard Z71.
Hello I hope I’m not too late to get a reply but does this unit have the moving reverse guidelines like the OEM unit does?
Yes it does.
Hi, I was curious, what are the two power buttons on either side of the screen? What do they control.
They are for heated seats.
What does each power knob do?
