Ray Manzarek's keyboard playing on The Doors iconic track "Riders On The Storm" has always been a major inspiration for me. So when Rhodes approached me recently and asked if I wanted to recreate a classic track using their new Rhodes keyboard plugin, I knew exactly what song I wanted to do!

That guy did a killer job recreating the vocals. Awesome work.
Yeah, that was the part I was afraid would be cringe as fuck... but damn did he nail it.... while reading the lyrics of his phone! :P
He sounds a LOT like Jim.
He's so late with timings thou
This is great
I was about to say you should call him by his name. Lol
Hats off to the singer; proper performance there.
100%
I heard this when it came out. I was 13, and I used to listen to Radio Luxembourg in bed at night. I'd listen under my pillow so my parents wouldn't hear it and come in and switch it off. When I heard this in a darkened room, it was very exciting and just a little bit scary.
I remember hearing it when I was very young as well, and immediately falling in love with it despite it being pretty spooky. I'd never heard anything quite like it before (and frankly haven't ever since.)
Yes, listening to Radio Luxemburg in bed ... I also remember this time, before "video killed the radio star"! Although: The sound quality of medium frequency AM broadcasting was of coarse quite poor; I think when "Riders on the Strom" was released (in 1971 according to Wikipedia, when I was 17), I probably only listened to Swiss and German broadcasting stations using VHF FM. So I can't actually remember when I heard the song for the first time; but meanwhile it is my absolute favorite of all songs by the Doors.
@@maxblatter Godley and Creme, ex-10cc, recorded a kind of homage to Radio Luxembourg called Get Well Soon. ua-cam.com/video/sVmBub1MPgg/v-deo.html
I got into The Doors 25 years later as a 15 y/o. Head phones on, lights off, bon voyage....
'71 was a truly amazing year for durable music: Gordon Lightfoot "If You Could Read My Mind", Janis Joplin "Me and Bobby McGee", Ike & Tina Turner "Proud Mary", Jethro Tull
"Aqualung", Marvin Gaye "What's Going On" , Three Dog Night "Joy To The World" , Rolling Stones "Brown Sugar", Rock Opera "Jesus Christ Superstar", Carole King
"It's Too Late, Baby", Ringo Starr "It Don't Come Easy", Carly Simon "That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be", Emerson Lake & Palmer "Tarkus" - and that's just the first six months ! The biggest items were still to come... (Roundabout, Stairway to Heaven, Won't get Fooled Again, etc etc, all released before the end of '71)
I liked this song so much I went to my local record shop and I asked "What have you got by The Doors?" The shop assistant said: "A bucket of sand and a fire blanket.”
Thank you Tim Vine.
You might like a band called The Doublejumps if you like listening to The Doors
The Doors are fine. My comment is a pun..
Man you’re a proper multi-talented chap! Beautiful performance, and also hats off to your mate who proper nailed the vocal vibe 👌
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love that the singer appears to be reading the lyrics off his phone. Like, "yeah I do a flawless Jim Morrison impression, but it's not like I know the words or anything."
Ruins it a little for me.
@@nomnom112 would probably help him emote more and improve performance memorising and understanding the lyrics on an emotional level
@@nomnom112 Yeah same
Yea, I never truly liked when the singer read the lyrics on the Phone. It looks bad
This generation can't remember any lyrics without a phone or tablet. Kind of sad
I believe Jim’s whispered vocal track was the last thing he recorded with the Doors. It was definitely the last song all 4 members of the band were involved with.
Also weird to think that Jim never got to perform this live, in fact I believe that he never got to hear the whole of LA woman as the mix was completed after he left for France where he passed away. Let me know if I’m wrong, saw a doc quite a few years ago so…..
I always wondered did Jim ever sing this live
Fantastic reproduction of one of my favorite songs! Even the vocals sound just like Jim Morrison.
My mom actually met Ray Manzarek while she was a waitress in San Francisco, he seemed like a nice, soft-spoken guy and my mom got his autograph! Don't know where it is today sadly.
Spine tingling version David. You're a wonderful talent
😊😊😊😊
The original isolated keyboard track for this song is one of the best things I ever heard on UA-cam.
Excellent reproduction ... your musicianship was second to none. Vocal was absolute perfection.
Wow, thank you!
You know you're witnessing talent when they make a masterpiece seem so easy... Great job!
My favorite Doors song! Thank you David! And I have to agree with the majority of the comments, the vocalist is excellent!
His vocals are stellar. Great job guys
I was thinking about that Ray interview throughout your performance... And when I saw it at the end, it just made the entire video perfect... a perfect tribute indeed.
You totally nailed that. The vocals were great as well. Have you thought of doing a track from pink Floyd DSOTM for the anniversary of that album?
Love the Doors and love this faithful recreation!
😃😃
I‘m not a musician so its super fun for me to hunt for the little differences and try to think about why they differ. Its so close to the original. 🤩
Well done! The singer suits the song very good!
Right after you said he spoke the lyrics over the original track I listened to it. In all these years I never heard it until now. Very cool.
I also haven't heard it before. How is it even possible?
It’s my favourite part - for me it adds a layer of creepiness to the track.
@@grahamturner288 Creepy is how my cousin described it once I showed her 😅
Gobsmacked. You have some amazing chops. The electronic drum kit cymbals look so small, you have obviously practiced a lot on them. Lastly, this channel needs more subs, seriously under the radar numbers.
Wow - close your eyes and its Jim singing - sent shivers down my spine - great recreation loved it !
Певец потрясающе спел!
I wasn't expecting spot on vocals but that's what I got
Damn, the vocals are right on point! I can hear a few timing imperfections on the keyboard - not gonna complain because I know how hard playing exactly in time is 😅 Overall great recreation mate :)
Amazing recreation, David! The singer is so uncannily close to Jim Morrisson's actual voice too! Loved it! ♥
After watching any of your videos I was sure it would be a good recreation of the keyboard part, what I didn't expect was a whole recreation of the song and it being *THAT* good that even the vocals are convincing without being an impression.
I'm a big Doors fan and kind of picky when it comes to covers and tributes but I can listen to this one over and over without guilt XD
Riders is my favorite song by the Doors. That keyboard intro also inspired me to learn piano, too! It’s so inspirational and sounds like sunlight hitting a glass of water. You made it sound just as graceful as the real thing and more. Great job as always, keep up the good work!
Ray Manzarek in an interview (on YT: "RAY MANZAREK-RIDERS ON THE STORM) said that Jerry Scheff said the baseline was impossible to play on the bass guitar. But David has just proved it is not all that difficult.
yeah I remember having seen that interview that... not sure if Ray had to rearrange the initial vs of the bass line into the one actually played in the rcord
Sorry I repeated the same comment after you haha, interested in that same thing. He made the bass seem simple here
I think if you would play the line with out inversions on the bass the same notes as with keys then it would be harder?
Yeah, it's not hard at all
Love these recreations, amazing work David!!!
This is so beautiful man, thanks a lot for this tribute and hats off to your performance and your friend on vocals
I did this myself years ago, and you literally got all the little nuances you only hear from listening so many times. 10x better than my version too
You captured the song!!
Note for Note- you resembled the original song. Even played the keyboard Solo exactly as was played decades ago.
I did go to a few Doors Concerts in my teens. At one concert , I did notice a real live Bass player. Always played in the Shadows of the Stack of Marshall Amplifiers. Thank you for the impressive concert..
This was really amazing. Those vocals were spot on too! Awesome job 👏
Your overall way of filming and editing is very fulfilling. Direct but delicate. I love it.
ive had this song stuck in my head for a week now, thank you for this
Outstanding recretion. Gave me goosebumps!
Absolutely LOVE when you do recreations of classic songs!
I am loving these recreations of classics. More please!
David this just highlights your mastery of all your instruments so well. Thanks for such a cool video!
TIL the twinkly passages come from the Rhodes! What an incredible instrument.
Such amazing cover, the vocals and the instrumental part are both awesome! Great job! I’d love to see more covers on famous songs🤩
Outstanding recreation David, I didn't know about the whispered words. The vocals by Guy Bangham were superb, he certainly has the timbre of Jim Morrison. One of the great songs, it still sounds amazing.
Absolutely wonderful recreation - thank you!
I truly can’t stop listening, you are so right on!❤
Goosebumps all the way, amazing recreation 👏👏👏
Wow!! Just wow. Wonderful recreation!!! Excellent playing, and super excellent vocalist!
Your version is amazingly done ! It made me appreciate the song in a new way to see the parts being played in HD video 😙
Wow the vocals are absolutely spot on! Great musicianship also David, I aspire to that!
I love it! Awesome! Thanks!
So Incredible! Thanks!
One of the most beautiful song in all times. This piece is cinematographic, all our senses are floating in a chaotic myst.😅 you did such a great job❤
You smashed this recreation. It's always a joy to watch you playing something you love so much!
Absolutely beautiful, perfect rendition of one of the most beautiful songs! All instruments and vocal are top notch.
A fantastic recreation David - one of my favourite songs too. Props to you & Guy for this amazing tribute to the Doors’ musicianship.
Seriously, nice job, a masterpiece well explained for sure.
Bravo. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼Love the clips of original band members!
Everything in this video was awesome, the Song (a masterpiece), your recreation, the singer and everything else. Splendid!
Great works and a great singer!
This was just great. Loved it.
Wow!! It don't get any better than that! Awesome job!! 😎
La rompiste, David! Abrazo.
Great job. Thank you both for showing me another layer to my favorite Doors song.
Brilliant all around.. Vocals are fantastic! Sounds like the album!
I was just jamming this song with my friend the other day and we thought of covering it live - how convenient that you made this.
Incredible. This series is is a marvelous way to appreciate and reconsider classic jams. Vocal was uncanny
Great job on this beautiful song. It taps into timeless feelings, both of warm shelter and brooding dread, at hearing a storm approach. Love it.
Such an evocative piece. Ray was such a dude. RIP.
Your singer totally nailed it too. Cheers
Great job David. Your keyboards really capture the original Ray Manzarek sound and vibe. Nice guitar too 👏
Excelent job David! This is one of the most iconic songs of The Doors, which simplicity of the bass line is a pedal that works as foundation for the melody and other instruments to lay on.
Awesome! Great sound of the Rhodes!
Absolute perfection of 2 men band. Beautiful, mesmerizing , and justified recreation. Jim will raise from the grave. ❤️👍👍
Incredible, well done guys.
One of the cool things about growing up in the 70s is any time it rained the local radio stations played "Riders on the Storm"
Such a brilliant video. Very talented.
I just marvel at your musical talent and understanding. And you play such soulful music.
Amazing vocals!
This is amazing. Your channel is unlike any other. 🙏
This is fantastic, excellent, brilliant
Thank you!
Nature TV is amazing! This was very nice surprise. His vocals fit so well here
It sounds so beautiful man! Congrats
Wonderful job David!
Great job, David, you versatile multi-instrumentalist, you! Perfect choice for the singer, superb production!
I've always loved this song, definitely one of The Doors' best songs and one of my personal favourites from them so this recreation was absolutely fantastic. Great job as always, man, loved it
Masterpiece of a track and a fantastic cover. I'm absolutely in love with the drums on it, the groove during the verses is absolutely impeccable. John Denmore is a massively underrated drummer.
Excellent job on my absolute favorite Doors song of all time. ❤ And great key solo! 😉
Aww man, you nailed it. My favourite Doors track, and I’d not listened to them in ages but strangely this song came into my head while at work this morning and then I come home, look in my UA-cam subs and… great version. Morrison’s rep and behaviour has always tended to overwhelm the sheer virtuosity of the other members. Densmore always shone in their more expensive material, Krueger in many ways was closer to post-punk guitarists such as McGeoch and The Edge in his tasteful minimalism and Manzarek - just one if the greatest rock greatest keyboardists with such a fantastic sense of dynamics, which I think you did a great job of capturing in the contrast between those insistence jabbed chords followed by the tinkly “rain” descending theme. It’s also one of Morrison’s best vocals and the lyrics, despite the odd jarring phrase, almost feel like a premonition of the countless faceless highway serial killers that would populate the 70s and 80s.
So, yeah, I like it! 🙂
Fantastic! Wonderful musicianship.
Many thanks!
Great stuff David.....I've watched nearly all your videos and you are an excellent musician on not just piano but nearly every instrument there is........Kudos to you and I l👀k forward to all your future videos
As you were talking, I was nervous about the vocals, but dude NAILED it!!!! I know the instrumentation would be awesome.
Ray may be my fav keyboard player ever, Riders is definetly my fav Doors track, and THIS just became my favorite tribute to that track.
Congratulations David, this is both impressive and special, I´m glad i´ve came across this channel
Great job! Respect!
Yeah like everyone else says: great vocals! Very cool recreation. Excellent work!
Brilliant, perfection, I enjoyed that
Magnificent Maestro 🙏💗🎶
This is sublime. This took a gentle hand and plenty of talent, and the result is extraordinary. Well done! Special mention to the vocalist, who nailed the Jim Morrison sound.
Great job. Wow. The vocals.
EXCELLANT JOB, on all instruments !!
Brilliant! Love it!!!
