I heard this when it came out. I was 13, and I used to listen to Radio Luxembourg in bed at night. I'd listen under my pillow so my parents wouldn't hear it and come in and switch it off. When I heard this in a darkened room, it was very exciting and just a little bit scary.
I remember hearing it when I was very young as well, and immediately falling in love with it despite it being pretty spooky. I'd never heard anything quite like it before (and frankly haven't ever since.)
Yes, listening to Radio Luxemburg in bed ... I also remember this time, before "video killed the radio star"! Although: The sound quality of medium frequency AM broadcasting was of coarse quite poor; I think when "Riders on the Strom" was released (in 1971 according to Wikipedia, when I was 17), I probably only listened to Swiss and German broadcasting stations using VHF FM. So I can't actually remember when I heard the song for the first time; but meanwhile it is my absolute favorite of all songs by the Doors.
'71 was a truly amazing year for durable music: Gordon Lightfoot "If You Could Read My Mind", Janis Joplin "Me and Bobby McGee", Ike & Tina Turner "Proud Mary", Jethro Tull "Aqualung", Marvin Gaye "What's Going On" , Three Dog Night "Joy To The World" , Rolling Stones "Brown Sugar", Rock Opera "Jesus Christ Superstar", Carole King "It's Too Late, Baby", Ringo Starr "It Don't Come Easy", Carly Simon "That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be", Emerson Lake & Palmer "Tarkus" - and that's just the first six months ! The biggest items were still to come... (Roundabout, Stairway to Heaven, Won't get Fooled Again, etc etc, all released before the end of '71)
I love that the singer appears to be reading the lyrics off his phone. Like, "yeah I do a flawless Jim Morrison impression, but it's not like I know the words or anything."
I liked this song so much I went to my local record shop and I asked "What have you got by The Doors?" The shop assistant said: "A bucket of sand and a fire blanket.” Thank you Tim Vine.
I believe Jim’s whispered vocal track was the last thing he recorded with the Doors. It was definitely the last song all 4 members of the band were involved with.
Also weird to think that Jim never got to perform this live, in fact I believe that he never got to hear the whole of LA woman as the mix was completed after he left for France where he passed away. Let me know if I’m wrong, saw a doc quite a few years ago so…..
I listened to the original and this back to back, the whispering is actually quiet here, that and the modern production are legit all that remind me this isn’t the original, damn this is crazy good
I was thinking about that Ray interview throughout your performance... And when I saw it at the end, it just made the entire video perfect... a perfect tribute indeed.
Riders is my favorite song by the Doors. That keyboard intro also inspired me to learn piano, too! It’s so inspirational and sounds like sunlight hitting a glass of water. You made it sound just as graceful as the real thing and more. Great job as always, keep up the good work!
After watching any of your videos I was sure it would be a good recreation of the keyboard part, what I didn't expect was a whole recreation of the song and it being *THAT* good that even the vocals are convincing without being an impression. I'm a big Doors fan and kind of picky when it comes to covers and tributes but I can listen to this one over and over without guilt XD
Outstanding recreation David, I didn't know about the whispered words. The vocals by Guy Bangham were superb, he certainly has the timbre of Jim Morrison. One of the great songs, it still sounds amazing.
Gobsmacked. You have some amazing chops. The electronic drum kit cymbals look so small, you have obviously practiced a lot on them. Lastly, this channel needs more subs, seriously under the radar numbers.
You captured the song!! Note for Note- you resembled the original song. Even played the keyboard Solo exactly as was played decades ago. I did go to a few Doors Concerts in my teens. At one concert , I did notice a real live Bass player. Always played in the Shadows of the Stack of Marshall Amplifiers. Thank you for the impressive concert..
GREAT JOB! BRAVO!! We used to perform that one often. Bill Hendricks Band. Live. All parts. Piece of cake with everybody playing together. AND if was storming outside the club - we even had the thunder and rain sounds!!!
Masterpiece of a track and a fantastic cover. I'm absolutely in love with the drums on it, the groove during the verses is absolutely impeccable. John Denmore is a massively underrated drummer.
Ray may be my fav keyboard player ever, Riders is definetly my fav Doors track, and THIS just became my favorite tribute to that track. Congratulations David, this is both impressive and special, I´m glad i´ve came across this channel
Great job on this beautiful song. It taps into timeless feelings, both of warm shelter and brooding dread, at hearing a storm approach. Love it. Such an evocative piece. Ray was such a dude. RIP. Your singer totally nailed it too. Cheers
Damn, the vocals are right on point! I can hear a few timing imperfections on the keyboard - not gonna complain because I know how hard playing exactly in time is 😅 Overall great recreation mate :)
I am blessed with having been 9 years old when this song was popular! And light my fire was all over the radio at that time! Jim Morrison was soooo popular back then!!! And then things sort of went blank. The doors were just Amazing!
This is sublime. This took a gentle hand and plenty of talent, and the result is extraordinary. Well done! Special mention to the vocalist, who nailed the Jim Morrison sound.
Great stuff David.....I've watched nearly all your videos and you are an excellent musician on not just piano but nearly every instrument there is........Kudos to you and I l👀k forward to all your future videos
Excelent job David! This is one of the most iconic songs of The Doors, which simplicity of the bass line is a pedal that works as foundation for the melody and other instruments to lay on.

That guy did a killer job recreating the vocals. Awesome work.
Yeah, that was the part I was afraid would be cringe as fuck... but damn did he nail it.... while reading the lyrics of his phone! :P
He sounds a LOT like Jim.
He's so late with timings thou
This is great
I was about to say you should call him by his name. Lol
Hats off to the singer; proper performance there.
100%

I got into The Doors 25 years later as a 15 y/o. Head phones on, lights off, bon voyage....

Man you’re a proper multi-talented chap! Beautiful performance, and also hats off to your mate who proper nailed the vocal vibe 👌
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love that the singer appears to be reading the lyrics off his phone. Like, "yeah I do a flawless Jim Morrison impression, but it's not like I know the words or anything."
Ruins it a little for me.
@@nomnom112 would probably help him emote more and improve performance memorising and understanding the lyrics on an emotional level
@@nomnom112 Yeah same
Yea, I never truly liked when the singer read the lyrics on the Phone. It looks bad
This generation can't remember any lyrics without a phone or tablet. Kind of sad
The effect on that guitar is perfect. It has such a chilling vibe to it.
🤩
I liked this song so much I went to my local record shop and I asked "What have you got by The Doors?" The shop assistant said: "A bucket of sand and a fire blanket.”
Thank you Tim Vine.

The Doors are fine. My comment is a pun..
I like this joke very much. 😅
Fantastic reproduction of one of my favorite songs! Even the vocals sound just like Jim Morrison.
Spine tingling version David. You're a wonderful talent
😊😊😊😊
The original isolated keyboard track for this song is one of the best things I ever heard on UA-cam.

I always wondered did Jim ever sing this live
I listened to the original and this back to back, the whispering is actually quiet here, that and the modern production are legit all that remind me this isn’t the original, damn this is crazy good
You know you're witnessing talent when they make a masterpiece seem so easy... Great job!
My favorite Doors song! Thank you David! And I have to agree with the majority of the comments, the vocalist is excellent!
Excellent reproduction ... your musicianship was second to none. Vocal was absolute perfection.
Wow, thank you!
You fucking nailed it; good on ya; Jim would be proud!
I was thinking about that Ray interview throughout your performance... And when I saw it at the end, it just made the entire video perfect... a perfect tribute indeed.
His vocals are stellar. Great job guys
Love the Doors and love this faithful recreation!

Wow - close your eyes and its Jim singing - sent shivers down my spine - great recreation loved it !

@@andrewmarcellis2007 Thank you for the suggestion. I'll look them up.
This is fantastic, excellent, brilliant
Thank you!
One of the cool things about growing up in the 70s is any time it rained the local radio stations played "Riders on the Storm"
Right after you said he spoke the lyrics over the original track I listened to it. In all these years I never heard it until now. Very cool.
I also haven't heard it before. How is it even possible?
It’s my favourite part - for me it adds a layer of creepiness to the track.
@@grahamturner288 Creepy is how my cousin described it once I showed her 😅
I truly can’t stop listening, you are so right on!❤
Absolutely LOVE when you do recreations of classic songs!
Wow the vocals are absolutely spot on! Great musicianship also David, I aspire to that!
Your overall way of filming and editing is very fulfilling. Direct but delicate. I love it.
ive had this song stuck in my head for a week now, thank you for this
Fantastic! Wonderful musicianship.
Many thanks!
Outstanding recretion. Gave me goosebumps!
I‘m not a musician so its super fun for me to hunt for the little differences and try to think about why they differ. Its so close to the original. 🤩
Absolute perfection of 2 men band. Beautiful, mesmerizing , and justified recreation. Jim will raise from the grave. ❤️👍👍
This is so beautiful man, thanks a lot for this tribute and hats off to your performance and your friend on vocals
Truly wonderful! Thanks.
Seriously, nice job, a masterpiece well explained for sure.
Magnificent Maestro 🙏💗🎶
You totally nailed that. The vocals were great as well. Have you thought of doing a track from pink Floyd DSOTM for the anniversary of that album?
