This video features the C43 AMG which is one of the AMG performance versions of the Mercedes C Class. My car is the 2019 C43 AMG Saloon or the C43 AMG Sedan for those across the pond :)
The C43 gives you that great AMG sound from the AMG performance and also the luxury of a Mercedes Benz
This is the W205 Class. The 2019 C43 AMG

On Mercedes, if you hold down left (downshift) paddle shifter while cruising, it will automatically select the best gear for overtaking (passing). But keep in mind, it will go into manual mode and you will have to shift up if necessary!
For example you are cruising at 1600RPM, there is a vehicle in front of you and you wait for the perfect moment to overtake, hold down left paddle shifter and gearbox will select gear around 3000-4000RPM (depends on engine Diesel or Petrol), of you are ready to go.
Tested on Mercedes C class 220D (S205 2015)
Huge tip for winter driving: when in snowy conditions and at a complete stop, shift into 2nd gear. You will minimize torque when you hit the gas and have a smoother take off.
Or… just select “slippery” mode [❄️]
Tip 7 is my favorite - don't be afraid. I just got an AMG GLC43 and I never really driven with paddle shifters before and I'm hesitant because the sound of down shifting makes me feel like it's ruining the engine. Thanks for the encouragement.
Just bought an Eclass AMG, never had an auto before with paddle shifts so thanks for the tips! Will be testing them out this weekend 👍🏼
This is the best video I’ve seen about paddle shifting and I’ve seen plenty. I didn’t realize my paddle shifters actually had so many benefits. I will be using them and practicing to get the hang of them for sure.
Thank you for the kind comment. I'm so glad to hear the video was helpful! Happy paddle shifting :)
The way this video is made, is brilliant!
Even some larger (several million of subscribers) channels don’t compose the video this well. The music, on screen text and scene cuts! Keep up the good work buddy!
Thank you so much for the nice comment. These type of comments make all the hard work into those little details worth while! I absolutely love making these videos. Lots more to come!
This is the absolute best video on this subject. Thank you
I've never used paddle shifts before so your vid was very edifying; keep um coming. This will come in handy for my soon to purchase Mercedes c-Class C250 CDI Avantgarde Auto. Thanks man.
These videos are so professional, really great stuff. You've earned a subscription 👍
Thank you so much Rich, I really appreciate the comment and the sub! Lot's of exciting content on the way this year, I hope you enjoy it!
Just purchased 2019 Mercedes e300 learning all the awesome tips, Thanks from California
Thanks D Cal you are so welcome! Enjoy your new e300 and greetings from across the pond!
Great video, top tips! I miss my C43.
Thanks for the tips. I'm saving this video to watch it again when I buy my E63 AMG 😀😀
Thank you so much for this, brother! I can't wait to test these out on my new AMG CLA 35.
You are welcome! Enjoy your CLA35! :)
I literally wrote down most of these tips. They were so good! 👍
Top tips, thank you! I'll try some out over the weekend. Also, it's good to hear I can't break it - I've been pretty cautious so far!
Good stuff! Hope it goes well. Manual mode is so fun once you get used to it.
well-made video, thanks you! i liked tip7 the most.
Thanks for the tips! We just purchased a 2020 AMG E 53 Cabriolet and I'm looking forward to testing the paddle shifters. I tried the paddle shifters on our GLC 300, but I'm thinking the AMG will loads more fun! I've liked and subscribed.
This is the exactly the right information I was looking for! Thanks a lot !
You are welcome! Thank you for the nice comment :)
thank for those tips, love it..
I bought the same car as you and your tips and tricks videos are a big help. Thanks so much from NY!!!
Ah! Big congrats It’s a brilliant car and so much fun in manual mode! I hope you enjoy many happy miles! :)
Thank you from Bulgaria!
Many thanks for the vid. Just ordered a Shooting B with paddles and felt doubtful, but after this... no doubts. You got yourself a subscr.
Thanks Bengt, glad you found the video helpful. Congrats on your car, I hope it arrives soon! :)
Great content and professional. thanks for sharing. 👍 would try on A250 W177
Great vid! Lots of good info. Gonna get more familiar with my Kia Stinger Gt paddle shifters.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed and found it helpful :)
From years of experience driving on snow and ice with Nisan GTR35 and MB GLS63, I've found it much safer to just using "slippery" mode than using manual mode. In fact, it may be dangerous downshifting in slippery conditions as the sudden deceleration may trigger a slide.
I love Mercedes-Benz vehicles I currently have a cls 63 amg and I love this car
Love these tips! Thanks.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed them. I'm working on a detailed in depth complete guide to paddles too, lots more videos on the way!
Really enjoyed this video, deserves a subscription from me !
Thanks! These comments always make me smile and I appreciate the support! Welcome to the channel :)
Thanks for the video and information! Really appreciate it!
I have had my GLB 35 AMG from almost a year but just recently started to try out the paddle shifters and its pretty fun to use, just wasn’t sure if i was going to damage the gearbox or any engine components if I’m driving at a higher rpm or slowing down using the “engine breaking” method!
Keep up the great work my good sir!
You are welcome! Thanks for watching :) I have another video here on paddle shifters too ua-cam.com/video/LZKfuFxUkLE/v-deo.htmlsi=qwom-yhMj4YYV-6O
excellent video!
Love the channel new to your vids but very much enjoy 👍😊
Thanks! Welcome aboard! Lots of exciting content coming this year :)
This video was much more useful than I thought it would be before I clicked it. 👍
Thanks Seany Glad you found it helpful! :)
Great tips! Thanks. In non-AMG Mercedes you may not have the manual button but if you have Individual mode among the selectable driving modes you can program it to be Manual in that mode, effectively giving you a manual switch. Now I’m keen to try it out thanks to your tips.
Ah, thank you that's great to know! I've just added this in my 40 Mercedes tips and tricks video I'm working on.. Yep it's a beast and is taking quite some time to put together! :)
how do you do that?
Great video, good tips…subscribed :). !
Thanks Phil!
Just bought a b class, watched your video before i used the paddles, thank you for the great tips
You are welcome Adrian, thanks for watching and enjoy your new car :)
Good video! Appreciated
Your welcome! Glad it was helpful :)
Thanks it really helped me
You are very welcome :)
And I just subscribed to your channel. I look forward to watching more of your content and I enjoy supporting others businesses as well!
Still working on my UA-cam channel so I know how much hard work goes into making content. I enjoy your editing and creativity that goes into making your videos🤙🏽
Thanks Darian, I love UA-cam and making videos. It's a lot of work but such a pleasure!
Im just waiting to have my Mercedes AMG 43 delivered thanks for heads up re bigger paddles!
No Problem Martin glad you enjoyed! I hope the delivery all goes well. Congrats on your new car!
Excellent
Brilliant video.
Thanks Errol! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Yes, I must play with them more (especially the next time is snows in Queensland 😎), but… at my age, manually changing 9 gears seems like way to much hard work and the Sport + setting is already enough fun for being immature with . Seriously, thanks for the advice and overview .
I guess im randomly asking but does any of you know a method to log back into an Instagram account??
I stupidly forgot my password. I appreciate any help you can give me.
@Lennon Louis instablaster =)
@Edison Dean I really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and I'm in the hacking process now.
Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
in the a45s, not sure about others, while in launch control, you can hold right paddle shift, and while you do take note of the display you'll see a popup showing increasing revs indicator before launching. it's pretty cool
Nice video! I am fairly new to owning a Mercedes as well. I got a steal a year ago and purchase my 2012 C250 coupe for 14k off an elderly couple who hardly drove it as they couldn't get in and out of it lol. Well, it was loaner car from Gilbert AZ. So I'm the second owner...No regrets what's so ever!
I'm glad I started off with an entry level Mercedes. Maintenance is actually pretty cheap on this one.
I've been a little hesitant in fully flooring it while shifting paddles. I just started playing with it more and watching videos like this encourages me not to be scared to put my engine and transmission to work.
Great to hear! Welcome to the club :) The paddles can take a little bit to get used to but once you do they are so fun to use.
This Dude is Dopeeeee!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Emotion start on my e43 is just placing the car in Sport+ and then starting it up. Sounds good with some pops and bangs especially when the engine is warmed up!
Yep! Love those suprise pops when the engine is warm :D
If you want to go back into automatic after clicking the paddle just click the c43 gear selector back into drive and it goes back into automatic.
Thanks Cyptur, I haven't actually tried this so will give it a go!
I have a 2020 C200 AMG Brilliant Blue and its amazing ..........
One of my favourite colours 💙
@@ABAUTOAMG Its A Sexy Colour And Makes The Car Look Like A Beast......
I bought an A250e 10 days ago, it's my first Mercedes, my first automatic transmission and my first car with paddles so I'm still learning and I admit I am a bit overwhelmed and I am always afraid to do something wrong, especially when the thermic engine kicks in in place of the electric one and the rpm goes up in a second... thanks for the useful tips !
Ah, no problem Mauro using the paddles can be a bit overwhelming at first but with practice they start to become really fun to use. Congrats on your car :)
@@ABAUTOAMG thanks ! oh btw, thank you for the paddle extenders tip... I found them on Amazon and they look really great, they give my car a very sporty look !
When i collect my C220d AMG night line next month I'm gonna know everything about it from watching your videos lol. I know its a diesel but it looks so much like the C43 with the 19's and the rear lip spoiler
Thanks DJW glad they have been helpful so far! Don't worry the 220d's still pack quite a punch and are fun to drive! You will love it :)
Yeah 6.7 to 60 is no slouch. Going from a Auris hydrid is gonna be a crazy change. Its the looks that made me buy it.
@@Dave999mg Ah yep if your coming from an Auris you are in for a treat. Remember too you get a lot of low down torque in the diesel's :) Yeah they are great looking cars, nice mixture of class and sporty!
Its a bit of difference isnt it haha. Tbh the Auris has served me well over 5 years. Loads of tech but no power though lol. One thing im not looking forward to is the RWD in the snow! Might have to switch to winters for a few months of the year
@@Dave999mg It's not too bad, the traction control system is very sophisticated. As long as you keep good tyres you should be good :)
Hi bro, I need to know when I try to race on traffic lights as soon as turns green, what should I do after I accelerate and it is above 2500 rpms? Plz tell me I will be on sports plus mode, so should I up shift if yes when exactly to let the car fly or should I use down shift
Thanks! Great and informative video. May I also ask if we can change from comfort mode to sports mode when stepping on the accelerator?
No problem! Thanks for watching. It should be fine to change drive mode ehile accelerating :)
@@ABAUTOAMG cool thanks!!
Yes, you can
On newer models that don't have the manual button you can go into individual mode and select manual mode as a driving option.
Thanks Michael, thats a great tip for those missing the button 👍
Brakes are cheaper than an engine and gearbox
true but if your used to ride a motorcycle you would use the gears to slow down
You do that on snowy, icy roads. It won't damage your box or engine. Unless you're running at 100mph and go straight to 2nd.
Manual guys done it for ages in winter time
When youre downhill a shape curve, down shiff and brake sametime may save your ass
No shit
That’s true, but engine braking doesn’t damage your engine or transmission
These tips are only for MB? Or will be useful on a VW CC instead? Are u from UK,dude?
Instead of double clicking downshift to go down just hold the downshift paddle and it will automatically drop you to the lowest gear rev match.
Thanks Hogan great tip!
does this work for the w212 e63s? 2015
@@patrickbayeh7161 old comment but if you haven't tried it this feature is on any Mercedes vehicle with tiptronic regardless if it has paddles.
Wonder if this works on VW/Audi , will give it a try
I have found that on my S class Mercedes the rear brakes wear first. Using the paddle shifters to help slow the vehicle extends the life of the brakes.
I've noticed when driving my C300e that when driving in aut. you can drive in D- and then also have One Pedal Drive so you don't have to use the brakes. This works with both electric mode and engine mode.
Bought one yesterday, c43 wagon😄
Nice one congrats! 🎉
Can you really only go into full manual if your model has that M button? Are you not able to do the same using the dynamic indiviudal and using manual?
Any recommendations on where to get these paddle shifter extensions?
My dsg paddle shifters are on the way…thnx
Interesting
If we are coming to a stop 🛑, can we not just stop instead of downshifting? Is there any prob if we do that? Or we should always downshift and slowly stop?
You should get the panamericana grill it would look insane
Love the Pana grill, would look insane indeed!
Watching while waiting for another 5 year just to get an old 2015 mercedes cla45 amg 🥲
Where’d you get your paddle shifter extensions from?
Could you also do a video on how to use the refrigerator for Mercedes owners?
What a great tips and tricks video!
I have always been a VW owner for many yrs and all have been manual gear boxes.
Just recently I purchased my first ever AMG A35 . Ok it’s a step on the first run of the ladder of an AMG.
I have had the car a few months now but always kept the car in automatic mode.
I’m basically worried about using manual mode as fear of messing up my gears or doing damage without realising it .
I do believe some makes and models will get you out of trouble should you select wrong gearing by automatically going back into auto mode.
This however I believe isn’t available on the Mercedes range.
I know I’m excessively worried about using manual but as stressed I don’t want to put stress on the engine if ever I did something silly.
Any advice would be really appreciated thank you 😊
Hey Paul, not to worry! It can be intimidating at first especially since there's so many gears! I own a CLA45s now and I am going to be doing a full in-depth guide to safely and effectively using the paddles using the CLA45s. It will hopefully be really helpful if your a A35 owner. il admit though I've not started filming this yet but I really want to put it together this year. Lot's of videos in the works but I know a lot would like to see this one. Great choice by the way with the A35, even though they aren't as powerful and full on as the main AMG's It's still a crackling car, very underrated! Hope you are enjoying it.
@@ABAUTOAMG thank you for the reply it’s always appreciated.
I did originally have my heart set on an AMG A45s.
But unfortunately I was dreaming as they are well out of my budget, but as you stated the A35 is a good car even if it’s down on power.
Personally for me stepping out of a VW into a Mercedes it’s like night and day. Although the VW has some premium touches the Mercedes is certainly streets ahead.
I'm waiting for delivery of a Merc with one of these gearboxes and I have a question. I've always had manuals before, and when on the motorway in a car with decent torque, I often squeeze the accelerator hard without shifting down, if the in gear acceleration is sufficient for the occasion. Is it possible to make one of these gearboxes not downshift when you press the pedal hard, if you don't want it to?
Hi Richard, in full auto mode the car will very quickly downshift under hard acceleration depending on the gear and drive mode. In comfort mode it will be more likely to hold the gear while sport+ will quickly downshift to third gear. But in full manual paddle mode you will be able to hold the gear as you accelerate similar to your current manual. If your car doesn't have a manual button you should still be able to set up a full manual mode in the individual config. Hope this all helps :)
I have a burble tune on my 2017 C300 Coupe. I notice that when I go from Gear 3 to 2, I let go of the gas and then downshift for the pops, but sometimes i see that it keeps popping lol. is there a way to stop the continuous popping? Should i just slow down and let off the gas or down shift to gear 1?
Hi Sanny, The C43 stock doesn't tend to do this, sounds like its the tune causing the non stopping pops 😅
What about holding the downshift paddle as you are beginning acceleration to auto select best gear ?
Thanks Kevin this is an awesome feature :)
Top tip, thank you.
I want to fit those red extenders to my c43. However, most reviewers say the sticky pad isn’t up to it. Where did you get yours? Thnx. Love your C43 vids.
Hey David, thanks! I’d recommend getting one with 3m tape if your worried about them falling off. It should not budge. I spent an hour this weekend getting a 3m taped window mount off my windscreen, it was stuck so solid. Thought I’d never remove it that glue is so strong but kept going using dental flow and old credit cards 😅. I have heard the ones on www.dsg-paddles.com are good.
Still trying to work out how to control the revs before engaging first gear? Any help?
2nd Gear 5,500 Revs 🙌 💥
What are the mags on your car I want them
Hey AB you got any links for paddle shift extenders? I keep getting sent the incorrect ones? By the way another great vid thanks for the tips!
Hey! I'm looking around at the moment and ordering some in the test to try and find the best ones for everyone. Hopefully will be reviewing some soon!
@@ABAUTOAMG Yeah it seems to be hard to get the correct ones for the c43 facelift for some reason
Just bought my 2nd pair of paddles which I will be returning. Wow so many cheap after market products which don't even work
I have a question. If im in lets say 4th gear and for some reason i had to come to a full stop and didnt have time to down shift, is it okay to get to a full stop while still in 4th gear then downshift after i have already stopped? or should i downshift till the first gear before i eventually reach a full stop?
Hey no problem! Most cars should jump to 1st gear for you once you stop if you forget. If not should be fine to downshift to 1st once stopped.
Maybe the same thing like the sport motorcycles when changing gears up without releasing the acceleration-TIP 8-it's a faster way to change gears but this will decrease the engine's life;recomanded to release the acceleration
I have a 2009 sl63 but im scared to be using the paddle shifters all the time because i dont want to ruin the engine and the transmission, do u think i shouldnt worry about it and drive it as i like?
Don‘t worry! Just note that if you‘re in manual mode (after Pressing the Manual Button) the car won‘t change gears, no matter what. so make Sure to time your shifts right 👍🏻
Do all these tips work on the pre-facelifted models?
Yep they should do apart from the AMG emotion start, that was added to mid 2019 models.
does the weight of the paddles makes the steering heavier?
Hi Yiannis, Most are cast aluminium so they are very light so you don't really notice any weight at all.
Hi, interesting about the emotion start, my gla45s only only does so when the car warmed up, not cold start or any time. Is it normal? 🤔
Hey Lam, Yep this is normal on the 45s. It's because the M139 engine has a safety system to limit it till temps are up. There's a little blue icon top right of the digital dash, If that's there it means the temps are not high enough and It will actually limit the cars power. I tried it and it's amazing how slow it felt compared to normal. I'm guessing this applies sadly to emotion start. Otherwise I'd do it every startup! :(
@@ABAUTOAMG I see. Thanks for the explanation. The sales guy having no idea why it does not work in cold start.
So how do I rev the engine while driving?
Fax
*If you have an 8 speed gearbox force into 8th gear with paddle shift up if doing above 50mph*
Hi I reduce my speed by using my cruse control instead of using my paddle shift to save using breaks tear and ware is that ok?
Yes
Yea that’s engine braking too
1st gear going fast still makes sense LOL
Do you need to worry about transmition when using paddles all the time and how often should you maintenance it
As long as you stick to your cars manufacture servicing schedule you are all good. There's no different between using manual and automatic modes and maintenance.
@@ABAUTOAMG thank you, Do these tips also apply for the 2018 e43 AMG because that’s what I have
@@nicklamorte8506 absolutely! The e43 is very similar to the C43 so all these tips apply :)
@@ABAUTOAMG awesome thank you very much I subed to you your channel is awesome and very educational keep up the good work if you have an Instagram I’d love to follow and tell my friends about you
Thank you! I am @abautoamg on Instagram
You can get full manual if you don't have the button. You can chose manual in individual drive mode.
Thanks Damian, great tip!
If you drive a lamborghini and use both paddles at the same time the transmission puts you into neutral so you can rev up the engine. Thats basically how every showcar makes loud sounds without accelerating
I have big hands but interested in the extra surface areas going round around roundabouts.
The extenders are handy for that extra reach :)
Does the Emotion start work on a C43 ?? not tried it
They added it to the C43 from mid 2019 models.
Is it a matter of asking for a software update? I also have a 2019 c43 in USA, don't have emotion start and really want it..
So, in manual, and you come to a stop, and you want to give it a rev to hear your engine, is there a neutral??
Yep you have drive, neutral and park. You could rev it in park or neutral :)
i have a 2019 c43.... how on earth do i get the red flashing on the dash when i need to up shift?!?!?!?!
Have you tried putting the car into full manual mode (using the cog button on the center console)? This should flash when you redline and will also flash if you try to downshift to a too low gear at speed etc.
@@ABAUTOAMG i have not! thank you man! ill give it a shot! I've watched all your c43 videos and i just love your style bruv! Much love from Texas!
Can you select reverse on the pedals in full manual mode
Not in the Mercedes, you can only do this using the gear selector/stalk
Damn thank you I always thought downshift damage my engine
….and, I’ve started to use those paddles for engine braking….dose save wear on the brakes.!
I suggest doing a dechrome on your car, and a grill update
Thanks! Dechrome + Panoramic grill would be nice :)
👍👍
