My late father immigrated here to the US aboard the QM when he was eight years old. This info makes me so happy! I have loved this ship since I first visited in 1972 and was very disturbed to read about the neglect of the companies that had run it for so many years. I feel this ship is such an important part of history, in addition to being so interesting and so beautiful. It's preservation is music to my ears!

I remember watching the news seeing the ship arrive in Long Beach on its last voyage in 1967. My grandfather was an electrician on board as they stripped out the old electrical systems, because of that family history and her unmatched beauty the Queen Mary has always been dear to my heart. My husband and I enjoyed a 2 night stay aboard ship in 2008, the closest to a cruise I will ever take, rich history and beauty abounds while wandering around the ship. I recall an excellent Jacque Cousteau exhibit aboard ship in the late 1970’s, it was about the many phases of water….steam, liquid and solid. Thank you for the current update of the ship.

I've had dinner aboard her and it's majestic. The closest to the Titanic you will ever experience. Until they rebuild it of course. I also went aboard the Scorpion submarine next to her which was incredible. No one took care of it since the 2000's and shame on the owners for that.

I jumped at clicking this video as soon as I was able...which was almost a week after it was posted. This is all happening so much faster than I expected. I guess that's what happens when the right people are taking care of it!
I can't help but groan that the linoleum they're planning on replacing in Piccadilly square is the post-war version. The 1930s (Art Deco?) Sherbert green flooring was so beautiful, refreshing, calming, inspiring and I think would attract modern visitors even more than the post-war style. But the fact that it's getting replaced and in better accuracy I am not discounting at all. ... Actually, I didn't even know the current flooring was put in in the 1990s!?
Ditto on can't thanking you enough for these otherwise under-the-radar updates on our favourite queen.

Thank you for the update, Alex. The excellent work you do is so important to those of us who love the Queen. She was the first ocean liner that I was aware of, and was the original spark that ignited ny long-time love of the old mailboats. I grew up just a 30-minute drive down the coast from Long Beach, and was 3 years old when she steamed into port. My dad and his friends went out in a boat to greet her, like so many did. Not long ago, a couple of years before he departed this world, he recounted seeing her coming in under her own power, and what an amazing sight she was. There was wonder in his voice after all those years. I do wish he'd brought me along, but small children and small watercraft aren't the best combination...
I was actually just thinking about her funnel colours being a shade of red more appropriate for a CGT liner, and wishing they'd paint them in the distinctive Cunard ochre/orange red. I can understand now why they haven't done that- having to constantly repaint the funnels would take a lot of resources, and there are more critical needs to address, especially now.
Perhaps, in the future, some way can be figured out to prevent the rapid fading and a return to those iconic colours can be possible. The most important thing is that Queen Mary be preserved, and her future secured. It sounds like things are moving in the right direction. Please keep up the great work, your reports are very welcome and valuable to us.

I am most heartened to learn that security will be improved - I agree that certain sections of the ship should only be accessible by hotel guests. This is how the hotel used to operate and in line with how shore-side hotels operate. I would also like to see reduction in the so-called "ghost" hunter activity aboard, again as it was in the 1980s thru 1990s. I am very excited to plan a trip to America to see the Queen in her glory in the coming years! Many thanks! Mark :)

As a former Coast Guard officer, I stood the early morning watch aboard the USCGC Chase while on Ocean Station patrol in the North Atlantic. During my watch I observed a radar contact approaching and as it got closer it was identified as the QM on her last ocean crossing (my recollection was visibility was less than two miles). I called my Captain who had served in the NA during WW2 and knew the role of the QM and QE very well. At the time I had one (gas) turbine on line and he order me to take a parallel course and match speed that I did. She rendered honors to a US military vessel and we responded in kind. QM was certainly not doing her wartime speed but that we could keep up with her on one shaft spoke well of the Chase (now with the Nigerian Navy). (with both mains we were faster than the Mary but that took 5000/gallons per hour). Following this we returned to our otherwise boring patrol and the Capt. returned to his cabin. At that time the Chase was the newest commissioned ship in the Guard. I believe that I noted all of this in the ship's log.

We have a connection, I watched the news of her arriving in Long Beach with an escort of many boats in celebration. Wonderful that you were able think/say Bon Voyage oh person. I am humbled to have been on the ship several times, my grandfather helped refit her when she arrived. The workers lunch boxes were inspected at the end of the day making sure they did not take any ‘souvenirs’ home. I stayed aboard for 2 nights about 15 years ago. It was fun the tub had a knob for salt water, though no longer working. The tub bottom had a very sloped bottom to make sure it drained properly in high seas. The self guided tour was from bridge to engine room, memorable and my heart honored the people of the past that made the magic happen. I hope you can visit Queen Mary soon. I am a So Cal girl transplanted to Va in 1986. All the best to you.

Yeah that's one of the things the media got wrong, telling people the city was going to scuttle or scrap it...they never even considered that, they immediately chose to repair the ship.

I am so relieved to see this. The last report I saw on QM was that it was abandoned and deteriorating.
Thanks Alex and long beach for bringing out a long overdue smile!
I went on circa 1999/2000 when the Titanic exhibition was on board. You couldn't access a lot of the insides if you weren't a hotel resident and everyone had to leave the ship at 6pm if you weren't hotel guests.
I hung around and dodged the crowd sweepers as I wanted to hear the 6pm horn from the bridge deck, not realising quite how fffff ING loud that thing is!!! Jesus! It practically smacked the crap out of me. I have never heard anything that loud before or since.
Of course if I had thought about it, something that needs to be heard several miles away, is probably going to be loud when stood next to it.
As a Brit, thanks to you guys for looking after her.

Very informative video..THANK YOU ..I just hope they arent using too many LED lights..I think that the less bright lighting provided better ambiance..mostly in the rooms

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian  Рік тому +1

The great thing about LED lights is they can be programmed dimmer. But the reason the ship was less bright was because only half of her lights were functional, they all broke over the years. The ship was designed to be brighter.

So glad to see that the city is following through with the repairs. I didn’t expect the first class main hall and observation bar to get period appropriate flooring. I hope that the city will also find a way to incorporate the pool into the self guided tour and remove all of the cheesy special effects equipment and get rid of the ghost and legends show.

    • @AlextheHistorian

First the pool room will need urgent repairs to stabilize the tile work...its all in really fragile condition right now and repairs to the room to get it back to snuff may cost in the millions.

    Hi Alex,
Thanks for providing so much accurate information.
Over the years, I stayed overnight on the Queen Mary twice, taken tours and ate lunch at Sir Winston's cafe. It's so nice to hear that all these things will hopefully soon become available again.

Every time you post a new update, I always set aside time to check it out because I trust you as a verifiable, non-sensational source of information regarding the Queen Mary. I'm SO pleased she's getting the care that she deserves, this is all such a relief. I hope that in the next few years I'll have saved up enough to see her looking her best. The future looks bright for the Mary!

I'm glad they seem to be doing things properly this time. Cutting corners and doing things on the cheap is the main reason so many other great ocean liners have been lost to us over the decades. I hope a similar future can be in store for the _SS United States_ as well, who lost her running mate due to neglect and mismanagement before.
