Thanks for sharing your troubling times...Farming is all about life and death.....most people think its all rosy but there is a lot of heartbreak losing animals...not to mention the cost of vets attendance plus medication
Sorry to hear you’ve been under such trying times Dan. As always though you’ve done the absolute best you can for your livestock. Videos are always enjoyed but never expected, life and livestock comes first!
I lost 2 young heifers with blackleg about 20yrs ago, vaccinated ever since and never had anymore trouble. Remember at the time the vet telling me they had a customer who was busy at silage and had a batch of about 60 heifers grazing at an out farm, they hadn’t checked them for about 6 days when they went to check found 12 laying in the field dead all blackleg
Very sorry to hear your bad news but thank you for sharing it with us. I personally have heard of it but nothing more, my son,s partner is a vet and I shall be asking her if she has had any experience of it. Very good of you to share with us try to heighten awareness. What a terrible experience You and your family have had.
Sorry to hear about the loss of your heifers we've never experienced blackleg on our farm in Ni but I know some folk who do vaccinate for it hope the rest of your herd are ok 🤞
Sorry to hear about your problems with the future members of your herd. On top of the recent TB issues, it must be very hard to swallow. Good luck going forward.
Did a bit of research but also a Clostridium type problem. Clostridium in silage is in Germany a big headache. Leaky gut syndrome and a ton of other problems. Vaccination didn't bring our farm forward. More focus in hygiene in the feeding alley, silo's and fields did.
Sad news but at least you acted fast and have saved the rest. Cannot say I have had any experience of blackleg. The livestock come before UA-cam, because they take priority! The freindly heifer, you need them characters in a herd because they great to have about. When I used to work on a dairy farm I had a crew of friendly ones and they all knew I had a bit of proven or some digestive biscuits in my pocket as a treat for them. It was always good fun cleaning off the cubicles and sending them on into the collecting yard.
That happened to us a few years back. There had been a bit of drain work in field and some of the suckled calves came down with it. We had them tested and that was the cause. All the best going forward Dan
Very interesting but sad video Dan 😮 until your video id never heard of this bacterial infection ever 🤔 fingers crossed 🤞 that you have caught it and treated it 👍
Thanks for sharing, sounds like you acting quickly and did what you could to save the heifers. Down here in Cornwall, dad lost a couple beef calves at grass donkey years ago, he says it hits the best ones in the group. We have vaccinated before 1st turn out since then. But according to vet it’s not common practice to use the vaccine.
Dan that was tough for you all. Those antibiotics won't have been cheap either. Hopefully sharing your experience will save one of your viewers from the same.
Had one years ago Very few survived then antibiotics may have improved but the infected side had muscle loss. The animal was fine but with one withered muscle on her top back leg
So sorry about your lost heifers. Really tragic. Thank heavens for good vets that get to the bottom of it quick. Are there soil tests that could determine the ground contamination? Best wishes any way and always enjoy your vids although this one is sad.
No need to apologise for not posting video's for a while due to the stress you and your family Dan, I'm sorry about your loss of the four Cow's to you and to your family farm herd, especially seeing two dead Cow's in the field would worry any good stockman, thank you for the video and I hope you'll eradicate this dreadful disease soon, I haven't heard of Blackleg disease..... until now !!!!😮🐄🐂👍
Pity about loosing 4 but glad the rest are ok. Interesting that it can kill cattle in such a short time. You’ve definitely had a year of it this year!🤦♂
I’ve never considered blackleg to be a significant risk before talking to the vet at our recent TB test. She reckoned that we should vaccinate against it as, even though we’ve never had a case in 50 years or more. It costs pennies apparently. If I wasn’t retiring over the next six months I would certainly start vaccinating.
In an outbreak, all susceptible cattle should be vaccinated and treated prophylactically with administration of penicillin (10,000 IU/kg, IM) to prevent new cases for as long as 14 days. Cattle should be moved from affected pastures...
Blackleg is not contagious. The source for transmission is the clostridia bacterium spores waiting in the soil for the opportunity to come in contact with an open wound or to be ingested by a grazing animal. (Viewers)
Hello Dan. We had 2 eight mts old suckler calves died from blackleg 15 years ago, now calves before turn out get 1 shot of tribovax10 followed by second shot 1 mts later and a booster shot at one year old.

Pleased to hear that you are over the worst of these harrowing times. Best of luck for the future, you have a great looking herd of heifers there!

vaccination is the only way to deal with black leg ........no way around it.

Cant eradicate its soil borne . Vaccinate
@@stevenbevis9290I didn't say the disease in the soil, I meant the disease in his cattle l, Dan knows what I meant.
You can vaccinate when their calves after I think 2 weeks old which might be the best time.
Sorry to hear your bad news!
Sad time for the farm, I've heard of losses higher than what you experienced but that's no comfort

Sad to hear of this. Young ladies looking good on the meadows though.

We have had to vaccinate youngsters for last 60 years I know to, some. Land is bad for it ,incalfs never get it.
Tough times. Not a video you want to make. Here's hoping the rest of the youngsters are OK.
Sor to here that,,hope all else well
Such a shame those heifers look so well.
